Gooey Monster Eye Cookies

Ooey Gooey Monster Eye Cookies Recipe - so good and perfect for Halloween! Yellow cake mix, cream cheese, & powdered sugar with green food coloring and a candy eye on top!

Eek!! I’m SO excited for Halloween. I’ve officially switched gears and have been thinking of and making some great Halloween crafts, gift ideas and recipes that I can’t wait to share with you over the next month and a half.

I haven’t busted out my Halloween Decor just yet, but I have a feeling it might just happen today. I was hoping to get it out while my mom was here the past 6 days (she just went home yesterday – insert sad face here) but we just had too much fun shopping and eating and didn’t get to it. I can’t wait to share with you even more Halloween Decor Ideas. 🙂

Before we get to decor, I have some great Halloween cookies to share with you. They are a Halloween version of the Ooey Gooey Butter Cookies. They are seriously so good and festive.

The kids absolutely LOVED them!! The hubby and I may have had a few ourselves as well. These Gooey Butter cookies are always a hit and these ones definitely will be too at your next Halloween party. 🙂

Ingredients

  • 1 box Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1 egg
  • green food coloring
  • powdered sugar
  • candy eyeballs

Instructions

  • Beat butter, vanilla, egg and cream cheese until fluffy.
  • Mix in cake mix. Add green food coloring until it's the color you want. I used neon green. Chill for 30 minutes.
  • Roll into balls and dip in a bowl of powdered sugar.
  • Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. While warm push eye balls into the center or all over the cookie. ENJOY!

Other than the fact that the cookie dough needs to chill for awhile, they are very simple and easy to make, which is always a bonus. 🙂

Candy Eyeballs

We used these candy eyeballs from Wilton as well as the Bloodshot Candy eyeballs from Wilton. Just note that they may melt if you put the eyeballs on before baking. We tried that first and the bloodshot eyes turned to goo. I recommend placing them on the cookie just as they are getting out of the oven and they are still soft. We found the eyeballs at Michael’s but I’ve also seen them at Target and Walmart in the baking section or Wilton section. 🙂

    1. I’m sure you’re in fall mood too, Lisa! I LOVED, LOVE, LOVED all your Halloween creations last year and can’t wait to see what you come up with this year. 🙂 XO

  1. Those are so stinkin’ cute! I am definitely printing this page so I can make those for my daughter’s class party next month. Thanks so much for sharing.

    1. I hope you can find them Tina. They come in Large Eyes and Small Eyes and can be found in most baking sections… especially since it’s Halloween. 🙂

      1. Couldn’t you use a mini marshmallow and inverted mini chocolate chip, if you couldn’t find the eyeball candy? Just a thought 🙂

  2. Super cute cookies and they would be perfect to put in halloween little gift bags for our friends. Love it!! Thanks so much!! Kids looked they loved them too 🙂

  3. Hey Kristyn, I just came over to pin your awesome Halloween cookies and the link doesn’t seem to be working for me. It says the URL is invalid. Thought I’d let you know just in case it isn’t working for everyone else too.

    1. Hi Shauna. Thanks for the update… it seems like there are some weird issues with the PIN IT button today. Hopefully, you were able to get it to work. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I saw this on Pinterest and came to your site to check it out. Cute site! I love these and have bookmarked them to try. I think these would be fun to make for my boyfriend’s kiddos. 🙂 I will be posting them on my blog when I make them and will give you link love! Glad to have found you!

    1. This made about 2.5 dozen, but it depends on the size of cookies you want… you can make them bigger and get 2 dozen or do smaller and get 3 dozen. Hope that helps. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Dorothy!!! I can’t wait to see all the fun Halloween creations you come up with. I’m sure they will all be DELICIOUS!!! Thanks for stopping by! XO

    1. I usually roll them into balls about 1.5 inches wide which makes about 2.5 dozen. If I roll into 1 inch it makes about 3 dozen. If I roll them into 2 inches, it makes about 2 dozen. 🙂

      1. I’ve only seen the bloodshot ones at Michael’s in the Halloween section. They are so fun and festive and are PERFECT for these cookies. 🙂

  5. Love your Halloween recipes! Thanks for sharing. We have a Halloween Party every year, and these will be great treats for the kids!

    1. So glad you like the recipes. The kids will definitely love the gooey eye cookies. Let me know how the turn out. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

    1. I haven’t tried freezing them but I would imagine they are okay… especially because you have to refrigerate the dough for a bit to begin with. If you do freeze them let me know how they urn out. Thx!!

  6. i would like these cookies sent to my timeline could you please accept me as afriend and send it to me thank you i am kin to nina stephens

  7. Lol…love the cookies I had to giggle. What a fun and cool treat for my daughters class. Everything looks so cute!

  8. Just made these adorable cookies for our annual Halloween party… They turned out great 🙂 however, I had the dough in the fridge for over an hour and it was still sticky… I had to put it in the freezer for like 10 mins. Then they worked great

  9. My son and I just made these cookies – literally just pulled them out of the oven. He had so much fun putting making these and putting the eyes in! Thanks for a great Halloween activity!

  10. Can you tell me roughly how many cookies a batch yields? I have three classes to make treats for, so I’m wondering how many batches to make.

  11. Hi, after reading this awesome paragraph i am too delighted to share my know-how
    here with mates.

  12. Such a fun treat for school… my daughter loves them. We have nicknamed them Mike Wazowski’s….lol.
Super sweet though… do you think it would make a huge difference to use only half the cream cheese?

  13. I’m looking forward to making your Ooey Gooey Monster Cookies! I am wondering though… What is your advice on making them gluten free? Thanks!

    1. I think making them gluten-free could work. There have to be gluten-free cake mixes, right? If so, I would use one and then I think the other ingredients are okay, right? I’m not a gluten-free expert so I’m not sure exactly what can’t be eaten. :/

  14. I made these with my 4 year old last night. So easy. He could do everything except for creaming the cream cheese and butter. We had a ball making them and they are so yummy.

    1. Thank you for stopping by Desiree! So glad your son had fun making these with you. They are definitely really easy and super yummy! 😀

  15. I made these with my 4 year old last night. So easy. He could do everything except for creaming the cream cheese and butter. We had a ball making them and they are so yummy. Only thing – I would increase the baking time. They came out a bit too raw at first.

  16. Just finished making these for a college care package. They are A-DOR-A-BLE!! And delish. I wish I had scrolled down before I made them. They were still very sticky after being in the fridge for an hour. I never thought of sticking them in the freezer. I also, had to cook them longer than you suggested, closer to 15 minutes. I’m gonna have to add these to my holiday baking.

    1. They are definitely still sticky after half hour, but I still just roll them in a ball and put them in the powdered sugar and usually only have to cook for 8-10 minutes. Glad that you liked them and that they turned out adorable. 😀

  17. Hi!
Those cookies look awesome! I really want to make them, but do you have to use a mix? We don’t have that kind here in Sweden and I don’t think it’s that difficult to make your own batter. Do you think you can just make your own instead?

    /Helen

      1. Wow, how quick are you? =) Did not expect a response so soon!
Thanks for the link, I am so baking these for the kids at the library where I work.

        1. I try to be quick… don’t wan to leave ya hanging. 😉 Let me know how they turn out – hope it works!! I know the kids will love them. 🙂

  18. Hello!!
I love this, thank you so much for sharing!! How many cookies does this recipe make? Thx! I need to plan for a big party 🙂

  19. Hello
When I saw your cookies, I loved them! I want to make them, but I’m spanish and I don’t know how much is 1 8 oz. bar cream cheese (we have kg, g… but no oz.!). And I don’t know what is yellow cake mix box. Could you help me? Sorry if my english isn’t very well.

  20. I made these today and they turned out great with a little adjustment. I read some of the complaints about these being too gooey. I remembered that we make Almond Butter cookies for Christmas with a similar base of cream cheese and butter, so I followed the basics of that recipe. I chilled the dough for 1 1/2hrs so it was really cold and baked at 375*, 9 min for dark pan and 11 min for light. They came out with a perfect cake like texture and tasted great! Thanks for the recipe.

  21. These look so delightful! I’m going to make them for Halloween 🙂 Should the butter be salted or unsalted? Thanks!

    1. I almost always use unsalted butter when baking, but only had salted on hand for these guys, and they turned out fine. 🙂

  22. I had these pinned to make for our Halloween party last Saturday – and they turned out to be a HUGE hit! My boyfriend loved them, our friends loved them, and I may or may not have eaten a few myself 😉 This recipe is definitely going into the holiday/party rotation. I’m already scheming how to change up the candy “decoration” and colors so that I can make them for Thanksgiving and Christmas…

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by to leave a comment, Emily!! I’m so glad you and everyone else liked them! I made a Pumpkin version on the blog that would be perfect for Halloween, and I also have a Frosted Gooey Red Velvet Cookie version coming up for Christmas. Stay tuned… 😉

  23. Thanks so much for the Ooey Gooey Monster Eye Cookie recipe! I made these for my son’s 2nd grade class Halloween party today and the kids and the adults all loved them : ) Me too, they were pretty easy, and really yummy!

  24. Alright this might be a really dumb question but you’ll realize after reading it I am NOT a baker !;)
The cake mix: am I preparing it as instructed on the box then adding it to rest of the ingredients or am I JUST adding the powdered cake mixture to the addition ingredients?

      1. Bravo! What a sweet recipe!! I just threw a batch together for my kids as an after school surprise. I can’t WAIT to see their reactions on these :). I’ve had to stop myself from popping them into my mouth! Such fun!!!

          1. Well – I’ve been told to make them again today for both class parties :). They’re a hit!

  25. Just picked up the ingredients today to make them for my sons class. Only I have gummy eye balls. Hopefully they turn out.

    1. I think Gummy Eyeballs will work too, just not sure how well they will stick. Also, be sure to wait a tid longer to add them so they gummies don’t melt on the hot cookies. 🙂

  26. I made the Gooey Monster Cookies today with my 4 year old daughter. They turned out so adorable and yummy! The recipe was very easy- my daughter could do most of the steps. Thanks and Happy Halloween 🙂

    1. It makes me so happy to hear that you and your daughter had so much fun making them. This is one recipe my kids help with all the time, and they love it too!! Thank you for stopping by, and Happy Halloween!

      1. Back again and planning to adapt this recipe for Valentine’s Day since they were such a hit for Halloween. I bought the Wilton jumbo heart sprinkles (instead of the eyes) and will make the dough red and pink (instead of green and purple). My daughter is very excited… We will let you know how they turn out. Thanks again 🙂

          1. The Valentine’s Day version was a hit, too! Emailing you pictures now. Thanks for such a wonderful recipe- we have really enjoyed it! This time, even my 2 year old got to help 🙂

  27. Love this recipe! Super cute, super easy, super fun!!! Found it on Pinterest but also shared it on my FB page 🙂

    1. Thank you so much for the comment and for sharing, Alexis!! Hope they are super good too. Happy Halloween! 😉

      1. Daughter said her classmates devoured them and were looking for more, guess we know what we will be making for her upcoming birthday… a double batch 😉

  28. I am constantly trying to get my 12 year-old daughter to eat more vegetables. We work on learning to eat new ones, one at a time, and once she has learned to eat it without making the “gagging” face at the dinner table, we move on to another one. Right now, we are working on spinach. When I made these cookies last week, her first response was, “Mom, why did you make spinach cookies!” She wouldn’t even eat one until her father had tasted one and assured her that I was telling her the truth when I said it wasn’t spinach that made them green. 🙂 BTW, they are really good cookies–more cakey than a usual cookie, and they can easily be adapted to other holidays by changing the food coloring and sugar candies used. Thanks for the recipe and ideas!

  29. Lil Luna,

I was so excited to make these cute cookies for my 5 yr old Grandsons class party, however…mine were AWFUL! They were so gooey and they spread out like one big blob! I am so disappointed. :-o( *99.99% of time whatever I make turns out perfect BUT I usually follow the directions correctly….However, I thought “I’d experiment” and instead of using a normal yellow cake mix, I thought I would try the JIFFY box cake mix…that’s what I think went wrong…not enough cake mix. My heart is just so sad that I have to disappoint my little Grandson ;-( Thank You, YaYa

  30. These are so cute! I just finished making them for my son’s Kindergarten Halloween party today. I had to come up with something else for eyes since I didn’t have any candy ones. I just used vanilla frosting for glue and then added yellow and orange White chocolate Candy Corn M&Ms. My only issue was most of the cookies didn’t crack very much but other than that so easy to make and fun.

  31. thanks for the great treat idea!! I do have one question concerning the recipe….does it matter if the yellow cake has pudding added to the mix?

  32. I just posted a link to this page on my blog and used your photo of the green monster cookies (all credit given to you!) 🙂 I put my “version” next to them.. lol, there’s no comparison! Your work is beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing.

      1. I did use the upside-down chocolate chips, and since the cookies were a little smaller (I used a melon-baller to get the rounded dough!), the chocolate chips were a great alternative! Our local WalMart has the eyes in your post- I just wasn’t at the right store on the day I wanted to make them- I’ll know next time, though!

  33. These are so incredibly cute!! I am going to make these for my friend this Halloween!! She has an eyeball phobia! LOL! I’ll let you know what her reaction is 😉

  34. Hi there
These cookies look really great. I am hoping to make this weekend for 2nd birthday party. I’m in New Zealand and we work in grams not ounces here. Just wanted to check if your measurement for the cream cheese is 1.8 oz or 18 oz? Hope to hear from you soon!

  35. Aloha from Hawaii! and Mahalo for sharing this CUTE idea for Halloween cookies. I LOVE Halloween – I am going to make a batch of these for my family and extra to share with coworkers.

  36. I live in uk and wondered is white cake mix in the states the same as plain sponge mix in uk? Also is it 18 ounce of cream cheese ?

  37. I made the gooey monster eye cookies last year to include in a care package to daughter @ 1st year of college – HUGE HIT! I couldn’t find the blood shot eyes – those truly make the cookies! So I dipped a toothpick in red gel food coloring and made my own.

    1. Smart to add the food coloring. I try to stock up on the blood shot eyes since you can really only find them around the holidays and at certain stores. Glad they were a huge HIT! 😀

  38. What temperature do you set for the oven? The Gooey Monster Eye Cookies are adorable and they look like it would be fun, to make. I have gotten out of baking, this is so cute, I cannot wait to make..It just my husband and me, children and family live in different towns. Thinking of making and letting my husband take to work. Any suggestions on how to send them with him. Thank you so much for a cute and fun cookie. Rachel. 🙂

  39. Hi! These look AMAZING for a Halloween party! I’m so excited to make them this year 🙂

Just one question for you- how many cookies does this recipe make?

Thank you for posting such a wonderful idea.

  40. Great recipe! About how many cookies will this make? I plan on using a cookie drop to measure out the dough. Thank you!

  41. I made these yesterday. They came well. I baked them at a slightly lower temperature to keep them from browning (325 degrees). Big hit with the kids but too sweet for my taste. A double batch yielded about 48 big cookies.

  42. Hi. Adorable cookies! I’m wondering how far in advance these can be made? Do you think the cream cheese will lower the shelf life. It’s only a week until Halloween, but I have a lot to do. 🙂

  43. Are the cookies that color because of the neon food coloring you used, or do they get a little lighter when you put them in the powdered sugar? Would I get the same results if I just used regular food coloring?

    1. I think it’s because I used NEON food coloring. In general, the cookies end up just a tad lighter than what the cake batter looks like when you add the food coloring if that helps at all.

  44. I made these for a work Cooking baking/decorating competition at Halloween. I used the pumpkin cake mix. They WON! Wooo. LOL. & I personally love them, as they aren’t cloyingly sweet like so many cookies today.
Thank you SO much, as this is going to be a staple for me now!

  45. I know this is really old, if I could get an answer that would be great. I plan to make these cookies for my friends this halloween, and use decorated Pringle potato chip tubes as cute little containers. Would you know if these cookies would fit in the tubes? About how big of a ball of dough would be a good size? Thanks.

    1. They may be too big for a pringle can the size I make them, bu if you keep the ball to about an inch or a tid bigger then, they should be fine. 😉

  46. Can you use Pillsbury colored cake mix ( the blue, purple, ect..) kind for this recipe or does it have to be yellow cake mix?

  47. 5 stars
These are super cute! I’m actually making them right now, they are chilling right now. Just curious about any leftover cookies, should they be refrigerated with the cream cheese that’s in there? Thanks!

    1. I’ve never refrigerated mine but they have also never lasted more than a day at my house. 😉 Hope you guys liked them! 😀

  48. These are very cute, and such a good idea!

This will be my first attempt at making cookies with cream cheese in them. If you are not eating them right away, should they be refrigerated or are they fine at room temperature?

    Thank you.

    1. We’ve always kept them at room temp since the cream cheese is baked, but I don’t think it would be a bad idea to refrigerate them. They never last long at our house which means they’re never out for more than a day. 😉

  49. 5 stars
OMG i came across these cookies last year they where a big hit at our Halloween bake sale. i made them again on Canada day just left out the eye balls and colored them red and white not as cute but still so good. i’m making them again this year for my step son jk class im sure theyll will love them too

  50. Hi! These look great and I hope to make them today. Have you ever made them from scratch following your own recipe for yellow cake? Would that work? If anyone has tried that please let me know! I don’t have yellow cake box but have all ingredients to make from scratch

      1. Hey! I did try it actually – and they turned out delicious! No problems. Followed a yellow cake recipe i had, but just used the dry ingredients (2 1/4 c. flour, 3.5 tsp. baking powder, and 1 tsp. salt) in place of the cake box mix. I also added 1.5 c. sugar (that the yellow cake recipe called for) to the butter and cream cheese, then continued with your recipe.. adding the dry ingredients into the wet. I did use a full 1 tsp of vanilla, but other than that all was same! They were so good and will definitely be making again!

  51. 5 stars
I made these and they are so good! The bottoms got very dark and I thought I had burned a batch of them, however, they tasted delicious. ( I wonder if anyone else had a problem with the bottoms browning so much? They were on parchment paper.)

I used purple food coloring and stuck on 1 eyeball and a candy corn (I used some vanilla frosting to make them stick) and called these Purple People Eater cookies. They are super cute if I say so myself. I’ll absolutely make these again monster eyes or plain, forget the kids I want to eat them all myself lol!

I’m so glad I found this recipe. It’s a hit!

    1. They do get a little brown at the bottom. Those sound so cute with the candy corn added!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!

  52. Hi! I’m gonna be making these today and was wondering if there would be any problems skipping the powdered sugar bit of the recipe.

    1. I don’t think so. I haven’t made them without it, so I hope they’d be ok 🙂 It just gives added flavor. Thanks so much and have fun!

  53. Hi! Do I need any special instructions for High Altitude ? Also is it okay the cookie to still be soft ….. ( wasn’t sure since jt is cake batter ) wasn’t sure if they were done after 12 mins
    Thanks !

    1. Yes, they can be soft. And, the only thing I know about cooking in high altitude, is that usually it takes longer. Sorry, I wish I knew more! Hope that helps!

  54. Hi, I’m thinking these would be awesome for our baby’s second birthday (Halloween baby!) ans was just wondering if they freeze and thaw ok, and how long they keep in say, the fridge after being made, since I am trying to figure out what foods I can make ahead and what I can’t. 🙂
    thanks so much!

    1. Fun! I haven’t had to freeze them yet, so I’m not sure about how they would come out. Maybe you could freeze them after you have rolled them into balls, before rolling in powder sugar. If I were to freeze them, that is how I would try it. I usually keep my cookies in a cookie jar or an air tight container, just out on the counter. They will stay soft for days, but around here, they don’t last that long. I hope that helps you! You’ll love these 🙂

    1. I haven’t tried freezing them & me personally, I don’t liked making too far ahead, only because we love fresh. But, I do make them a day ahead & they are still super soft. These cookies stay soft for like a week!

  55. Have you ever frozen the dough? Can you make dough balls, freeze them and then cook at a later date (just put dough balls on pan and bake)?

    1. I personally haven’t tried, so I can’t tell you exactly how they will turn out, but they should be ok. I would let it that out first, then roll it in the powdered sugar & bake.

  56. I plan on making these tomorrow. This recipe says yellow cake mix but the video link says white cake mix. Does it matter? =) I have yellow cake mix.

  57. I used a white cake mix instead of yellow, , they looked perfect until I tasted THEM, they were way to dry despite 3 ATTEMPTs at changing time cookies cook still to dry…

  58. 5 stars
I made these twice within a week – once for work and then for a halloween party a few days later. They were delicious and unanimously awesome. My one recommendation is to add the food coloring BEfore the cake mix. it blends much easier, as the texture of the dough makes it very tough to evenly distribute coloring. 🙂

  59. I saw this on Pinterest and went to your site to look at it. Charming site! I love these and have bookmarked them to attempt. I think these eventual amusing to make for my sweetheart’s kiddos. ? I will post them on my blog when I make them and will give you connect love! Happy to have discovered you!

  60. Sorry, they didn’t taste right. I’ve never had that problem. I’m glad they looked cute 🙂 Thanks for giving them a try!
