Eek!! I’m SO excited for Halloween. I’ve officially switched gears and have been thinking of and making some great Halloween crafts, gift ideas and recipes that I can’t wait to share with you over the next month and a half.

I haven’t busted out my Halloween Decor just yet, but I have a feeling it might just happen today. I was hoping to get it out while my mom was here the past 6 days (she just went home yesterday – insert sad face here) but we just had too much fun shopping and eating and didn’t get to it. I can’t wait to share with you even more Halloween Decor Ideas. 🙂

Before we get to decor, I have some great Halloween cookies to share with you. They are a Halloween version of the Ooey Gooey Butter Cookies. They are seriously so good and festive.

The kids absolutely LOVED them!! The hubby and I may have had a few ourselves as well. These Gooey Butter cookies are always a hit and these ones definitely will be too at your next Halloween party. 🙂

Gooey Monster Eye Cookies Recipe

Ooey Gooey Monster Eye Cookies Recipe - so good and perfect for Halloween! Yellow cake mix, cream cheese, & powdered sugar with green food coloring and a candy eye on top!

  • 1 box Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1 egg
  • green food coloring
  • powdered sugar
  • candy eyeballs


  • Beat butter, vanilla, egg and cream cheese until fluffy.
  • Mix in cake mix. Add green food coloring until it's the color you want. I used neon green. Chill for 30 minutes.
  • Roll into balls and dip in a bowl of powdered sugar.
  • Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. While warm push eye balls into the center or all over the cookie. ENJOY!

Other than the fact that the cookie dough needs to chill for awhile, they are very simple and easy to make, which is always a bonus. 🙂

Candy Eyeballs

We used these candy eyeballs from Wilton as well as the Bloodshot Candy eyeballs from Wilton. Just note that they may melt if you put the eyeballs on before baking. We tried that first and the bloodshot eyes turned to goo. I recommend placing them on the cookie just as they are getting out of the oven and they are still soft. We found the eyeballs at Michael’s but I’ve also seen them at Target and Walmart in the baking section or Wilton section. 🙂

    1. This made about 2.5 dozen, but it depends on the size of cookies you want… you can make them bigger and get 2 dozen or do smaller and get 3 dozen. Hope that helps. 🙂

    1. I usually roll them into balls about 1.5 inches wide which makes about 2.5 dozen. If I roll into 1 inch it makes about 3 dozen. If I roll them into 2 inches, it makes about 2 dozen. 🙂

    1. I think making them gluten-free could work. There have to be gluten-free cake mixes, right? If so, I would use one and then I think the other ingredients are okay, right? I’m not a gluten-free expert so I’m not sure exactly what can’t be eaten. :/

  16. Just finished making these for a college care package.They are A-DOR-A-BLE!! And delish. I wish I had scrolled down before I made them. They were still very sticky after being in the fridge for an hour. I never thought of sticking them in the freezer. I also, had to cook them longer than you suggested, closer to 15 minutes. I’m gonna have to add these to my holiday baking.

    1. They are definitely still sticky after half hour, but I still just roll them in a ball and put them in the powdered sugar and usually only have to cook for 8-10 minutes. Glad that you liked them and that they turned out adorable. 😀

  20. I made these today and they turned out great with a little adjustment. I read some of the complaints about these being too gooey. I remembered that we make Almond Butter cookies for Christmas with a similar base of cream cheese and butter, so I followed the basics of that recipe. I chilled the dough for 1 1/2hrs so it was really cold and baked at 375*, 9 min for dark pan and 11 min for light. They came out with a perfect cake like texture and tasted great! Thanks for the recipe.

    1. I almost always use unsalted butter when baking, but only had salted on hand for these guys, and they turned out fine. 🙂

    The cake mix: am I preparing it as instructed on the box then adding it to rest of the ingredients or am I JUST adding the powdered cake mixture to the addition ingredients?

  28. I am constantly trying to get my 12 year-old daughter to eat more vegetables. We work on learning to eat new ones, one at a time, and once she has learned to eat it without making the “gagging” face at the dinner table, we move on to another one. Right now, we are working on spinach. When I made these cookies last week, her first response was, “Mom, why did you make spinach cookies!” She wouldn’t even eat one until her father had tasted one and assured her that I was telling her the truth when I said it wasn’t spinach that made them green. 🙂 BTW, they are really good cookies–more cakey than a usual cookie, and they can easily be adapted to other holidays by changing the food coloring and sugar candies used.     I was so excited to make these cute cookies for my 5 yr old Grandsons class party, however…mine were AWFUL! They were so gooey and they spread out like one big blob! I am so disappointed. :-o( *99.99% of time whatever I make turns out perfect BUT I usually follow the directions correctly….However, I thought “I’d experiment” and instead of using a normal yellow cake mix, I thought I would try the JIFFY box cake mix…that’s what I think went wrong…not enough cake mix. My heart is just so sad that I have to disappoint my little Grandson ;-( Thank You, YaYa

  30. These are so cute! I just finished making them for my son’s Kindergarten Halloween party today. I had to come up with something else for eyes since I didn’t have any candy ones. I just used vanilla frosting for glue and then added yellow and orange White chocolate Candy Corn M&Ms. My only issue was most of the cookies didn’t crack very much but other than that so easy to make and fun.

      1. I did use the upside-down chocolate chips, and since the cookies were a little smaller (I used a melon-baller to get the rounded dough!), the chocolate chips were a great alternative! Our local WalMart has the eyes in your post- I just wasn’t at the right store on the day I wanted to make them- I’ll know next time, though!

  37. I made the gooey monster eye cookies last year to include in a care package to daughter @ 1st year of college – HUGE HIT! I couldn’t find the blood shot eyes – those truly make the cookies! So I dipped a toothpick in red gel food coloring and made my own.

    1. Smart to add the food coloring. I try to stock up on the blood shot eyes since you can really only find them around the holidays and at certain stores. Glad they were a huge HIT! 😀

  41. I made these yesterday. They came well. I baked them at a slightly lower temperature to keep them from browning (325 degrees). Big hit with the kids but too sweet for my taste. A double batch yielded about 48 big cookies.

  43. Are the cookies that color because of the neon food coloring you used, or do they get a little lighter when you put them in the powdered sugar? Would I get the same results if I just used regular food coloring?

    1. I think it’s because I used NEON food coloring. In general, the cookies end up just a tad lighter than what the cake batter looks like when you add the food coloring if that helps at all.

I plan to make these cookies for my friends this halloween, and use decorated Pringle potato chip tubes as cute little containers. Would you know if these cookies would fit in the tubes? About how big of a ball of dough would be a good size? Thanks.

    1. They may be too big for a pringle can the size I make them, bu if you keep the ball to about an inch or a tid bigger then, they should be fine. 😉

    1. We’ve always kept them at room temp since the cream cheese is baked, but I don’t think it would be a bad idea to refrigerate them. They never last long at our house which means they’re never out for more than a day. 😉

      1. Hey! I did try it actually – and they turned out delicious! No problems. Followed a yellow cake recipe i had, but just used the dry ingredients (2 1/4 c. flour, 3.5 tsp. baking powder, and 1 tsp. salt) in place of the cake box mix. I also added 1.5 c. sugar (that the yellow cake recipe called for) to the butter and cream cheese, then continued with your recipe.. adding the dry ingredients into the wet. I did use a full 1 tsp of vanilla, but other than that all was same! They were so good and will definitely be making again!

    I made these and they are so good! The bottoms got very dark and I thought I had burned a batch of them, however, they tasted delicious. ( I wonder if anyone else had a problem with the bottoms browning so much? They were on parchment paper.)

    I used purple food coloring and stuck on 1 eyeball and a candy corn (I used some vanilla frosting to make them stick) and called these Purple People Eater cookies. They are super cute if I say so myself. I’ll absolutely make these again monster eyes or plain, forget the kids I want to eat them all myself lol!

    1. Yes, they can be soft. And, the only thing I know about cooking in high altitude, is that usually it takes longer. Sorry, I wish I knew more! Hope that helps!

    1. Fun! I haven’t had to freeze them yet, so I’m not sure about how they would come out. Maybe you could freeze them after you have rolled them into balls, before rolling in powder sugar. If I were to freeze them, that is how I would try it. I usually keep my cookies in a cookie jar or an air tight container, just out on the counter. They will stay soft for days, but around here, they don’t last that long. I hope that helps you! You’ll love these 🙂

    1. I haven’t tried freezing them & me personally, I don’t liked making too far ahead, only because we love fresh. But, I do make them a day ahead & they are still super soft. These cookies stay soft for like a week!

    1. I personally haven’t tried, so I can’t tell you exactly how they will turn out, but they should be ok. I would let it that out first, then roll it in the powdered sugar & bake.

    I made these twice within a week – once for work and then for a halloween party a few days later. They were delicious and unanimously awesome. My one recommendation is to add the food coloring BEfore the cake mix. it blends much easier, as the texture of the dough makes it very tough to evenly distribute coloring. 🙂
