- 2 1/4 cups cake flour
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup Half and Half
- 2-4 tsp black food coloring
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp white vinegar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour TWO 9 inch round pans.
In a bowl, sift cake flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
Mix butter and sugar in your mixer until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time until all mixed together.
Add vanilla and buttermilk to a small bowl. Add this to the butter and sugar mixture along with the dry ingredients, slowly.
Once all mixed together, add black food coloring until it is the color you want.
In a small bowl mix baking soda and vinegar (it's going to fizz). Add this to the mixture and beat for ten seconds.
Pour into greased circle pans and bake for 20-30 minutes (until a toothpick comes out clean).
Let cool completely before frosting. SEE BELOW FOR FROSTING RECIPE.
