Black and White Velvet Cake Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups cake flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup Half and Half
  • 2-4 tsp black food coloring
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp white vinegar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour TWO 9 inch round pans.
  • In a bowl, sift cake flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  • Mix butter and sugar in your mixer until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time until all mixed together.
  • Add vanilla and buttermilk to a small bowl. Add this to the butter and sugar mixture along with the dry ingredients, slowly.
  • Once all mixed together, add black food coloring until it is the color you want.
  • In a small bowl mix baking soda and vinegar (it's going to fizz). Add this to the mixture and beat for ten seconds.
  • Pour into greased circle pans and bake for 20-30 minutes (until a toothpick comes out clean).
