Closet Makeover

Organized and functional Closet Makeover tutorial on { lilluna.com } Great ideas to help inspire your own makeover!!

School is just around the corner, and I admit I am NOT looking forward to it. The days of sleeping in a little bit and having things a little more lax are soon over, and it makes me a little sad. We were able to get things down to a good system last year to make things less stressful, so I’m not SUPER worried about this year, but as I was writing out the kids’ schedule for 1 in first grade and 2 in preschool (different ones) I realized things would be a little crazy. Add having one more kid to the mix come October, and I know things will be down-right madness, but I’m hoping we get organized to where things are manageable and I’m not going crazy.

One of the most stressful things that would come up last year was losing the backpack. Somehow it would get lost right as we were leaving for school, which drove me bonkers!! I decided we needed a designated area to keep the backpacks and bags to help with this dilemma. When I was thinking about this I had remembered a project I had seen via Pinterest from The Real Housewives of Riverton for a Closet Makeover that I thought would be perfect! We had a hallway closet that was pretty messy and un-organized, so I knew this would help out a bit. Fortunately, it was an easy project where the hardest part was painting, but I love the result.

Here are the BEFORE and AFTER pics…

Loads better, right?!

It would have been even easier if we didn’t have to paint the closet (totally forgot our painter didn’t do that when we had them paint before we moved in), but that was an easy fix! Once things were painted it literally took us just an hour to get the wood and hooks in making our closet WAY more functional and organized.

Here are some of the BEFORE pics before we started…

Pretty messy and pretty un-organized!! And yes, there’s a random coat rack in there that I would pull out when we had company over for them to put their bags on. The closet also housed many jackets, but the kids’ closets had plenty of room for those there so that’s where we put those. This closet also is where I put the vacuum, but adding the hooks actually gave us more room for it. So, in the end I wanted it to be a place where we could keep the vacuum, bags/purses and backpacks. I also wanted a few bins on top to keep some of our church supplies (coloring books, board books, etc.) and also another bin for the gloves, beanies, scarfs, etc. that always seem to get lost. This Closet Makeover helped with all of that, and this is how we did it…

REMINDER…

This is what it looked like before – PLAIN & UGLY (and when everything as in it – MESSY!!!)

All items were purchased at Lowe’s…

SUPPLIES:

– Primed MDF

– Hooks

– Screwdriver + Screws

– Paint (since we had to paint our wall + I added some stenciled polka dots just for fun) 😉

DIRECTIONS:

{We painted it gray first – the same gray as all our walls – Mindful Gray from Sherwin Williams}

1. We began by measuring the wall to find out how long we had to cut the MDF. From there we cut the MDF and placed the back piece in first. We then screwed in the side pieces placing this right up against the top shelf.

We measured a few feet down and did the same thing. (EASY!)

2. I also added a Polka Dot design just for fun and for my obvious addiction to the pattern. 😉

3. From there we decided where we wanted the hooks and then screwed them in.

{We did 3 on the top and 3 on the bottom of the back side, and then 1 small hook on each side piece}

 We put bins on top and ended up with this beauty:

And with everything in it….

This project was BEYOND easy and has made a world of difference for keeping the purses and backpacks organized. We spent about $40 on hooks (because I wanted a certain kind) and then only a few bucks on the MDF. (Cheap, right?!)

I’m hoping this little Closet Makeover will help keep things a little more organized once school starts. 😉

    It may not be as pretty as you like, but putting a hanging shoe organizer on the inside of your closet door is great for storing hats, gloves, scarves and even umbrellas where the kids can reach them (so mom doesn’t have to get them every time).

    Put a boot tray on the floor for winter time, and a shoe rack on the inside of the door (down low for the wee ones) to hold gloves, hats, and such. That is an inspirational closet!
