The Kids’ Favorite Easter Tradition

It’s already almost Easter! Can you believe it?

Today, we wanted to share with you one of our favorite family Easter traditions.

Every year on Easter, we always do an Easter brunch or Easter dinner with extended family, but something we started doing with our kids is a glow-in-the-dark Easter egg hunt!

The kids LOVE it! Not only is it easy to do, but it’s so fun as well! All you do is grab some plastic eggs, fill them with glow sticks and candy, and hide them in the yard (or the house!) at night when it’s dark. The kids (& tweens and teens) go nuts!!

Supplies needed for glow in the dark Easter egg hunt

what you need

  • Plastic Easter Eggs (medium – large size work best)
  • Glow Sticks – glow bracelet size (found in the dollar section at Target, Michael’s, Dollar Store) – or Mini Glow Sticks
    • Another favorite is ballon lights. They are even brighter and easier to use!
  • Tape
  • Candy
Adding a glow stick, tied in a knot, to the inside of a plastic Easter egg.

How to Make Glow in the Dark Easter Eggs

  1. Snap glow sticks so they are glowing and insert into eggs along with some candy.
    • TIP: The regular sized glow sticks can be a little tricky to fit in and close easily. The easiest thing we’ve found that helps is tying them in a knot and then putting it inside the egg OR use mini glow sticks or the balloon lights.
  2. Tape shut, if needed, and HIDE while glow sticks are glowing.

That’s it – Told you it was EASY!

What’s great about these eggs is that are FUN! Even the hubby was temped to go out and find them during the hunt since he thought they looked so cool.

I promise this will become your kids’ new favorite Easter tradition.

Soooooo much fun! I’ve never seen mini glow in the dark glow sticks and those are way easier to use than the bracelet size.

Note- I don’t know if it was my phone being weird, but I got an Amazon error when I clicked on your mini glow stick link so I did a keyword search on amazon and you can get 200 mini sticks for $11. Great deal.

Hi! Stumbled upon your link + wanted to share something thAt has worked well for Us over the years. I purchase The tea lights from the Dollar Tree. They come in packs of four + fit perfectly inside a plastic egg. Some are white light, some change colors. It is super easy to just turn theM on. We store and reuse them.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Good idea! Thank you for sharing that!

We did the Easter egg glow in dark. With glow Sticks in colored eggs with candy didn’t work well. The kids couldn’t hardly tell what color the eggs were. Since they had a certain color to hunt. Can someone tell us what we did wrong.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Hmmm, we have done it several times each year for the past few years and it’s always worked. Were your glow sticks new and bright?

  8. Sharla says:

We loved this activity. But we used it for FHE and my husband used the story in Enos of the Brother of Jared- where the Lord lights the stones. I’m sure my kids will never forget this scripture story, because of the glow-in-the- dark eggs! 🙂

    1. Lil' Luna says:

LOVE THE IDEA!!! I’m so glad they liked it. 😀

  9. Marty says:

Ok, this may sound like a really dumb question but I want to do a night egg hunt w/ the glow stick but I have a couple of questions: first–the glow sticks–the stuff in them to make them glow, is it liquid, gel, ???. The reason I’m asking that is, here comes the dumb part, I have glow “sticks” and was wondering if I could cut them to go in the eggs. (They are too long as the “sticks”.), second–what “glow” thing did you use in them??? Thanks for your help. Marty

  10. Dawn De Lorenzo says:

Hobby Lobby sells the little tiny sticks to put inside the eggs:)

    1. Marty says:

How much are these glow sticks??? or do you remember??? We are on a tight budget so just wondering. THanks

  11. CraftMom says:

    1. Lil' Luna says:

YAY!! So glad it was a hit. We’re doing ours tomorrow, and the kids are SOOO excited. 🙂

  16. disneychamp says:

May I use your glow in the dark picture on my private blog to have a visual to link to your post on this? We did a glow in the dark hunt and it was a great success, but we didn’t get a photo of any glowing eggs.

I can not find the sticks anywhere! Where did you all find them?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Your kids will love it. We already did it once but the kids had so much fun we may have to do it one more time before Easter is over. 🙂

  26. Jennifer says:

Great idea! The last couple of years, because my kids are a little older, I’ve done a flashlight Easter egg hunt at night, where I’ve painted the eggs with glow in the dark paint, to make the hunt a little more challenging than a daytime hunt. But the glow sticks in the eggs will be perfect for the young guests.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Jennifer – painting the eggs in glow in the dark pant is awesome too!!! Great idea! Will have to try that out next year! Thanks for coming over to say hi. Hope you can come back again. 🙂

  27. Courtney says:

    2. Darlene says:

doesn’t the stuff pour out of the glow stick when u cut it

      1. Jana says:

You don’t cut them. You kind of twist (crack) them to make them glow.

      2. DKz Bianca says:

glow stick necklaces or bracelets would be what you were looking for

      3. Lil' Luna says:

Yes, you don’t cut it – you just snap the glow sticks so they are glowing and stuff in. 😉

  33. Jessica says:

LOVE this! Featuring it this Sunday on my Sunday Stalker!

Genius! My 4 year old can’t stop asking me about these and what will happen if someone touches them. 😉

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Oh yes, my 4 year old LOVED it. They were totally confused as to why it glowed but loved the hunt and opening it up to find the glow sticks AND candy. Bonus!!

  36. Lisa says:

What a fun idea! I’m going to try and find the short (2″) glow sticks today!
