Just like a churro
Sara Lee sent me some of their new Angel Food Cake to try out, and I’m happy to say that it was super delicious! The best thing about it is it’s thaw-and-serve and allows for quick and easy customization. With it, I decided to try a new recipe and came up with some Angel Food Cake Churro Bites.
Before I say anything more I just have to tell you my hubby’s response after trying them…He tasted it and said “Oh my heavens, these taste just like Churros!” My response, “That’s what they’re suppose to be!”
His reply, “I mean, like real churros… from Disneyland!” Needless to say, he REALLLLLY liked them and devoured them pretty quickly. The kids loved them too and kept asking for the “cinnamon treats”. I was happy that we had found another quick and delicious treat to have on Sunday mornings!
How to make Angel Food Cake Churro Bites
THAW. Let your Angel Food Cake thaw. Once thaw, cube the cake. My cubes were about 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches.
FRY. Heat vegetable oil on low-medium heat. Fry cubes until golden brown.
SEASON. Once golden brown, immediately put them in the bowl with cinnamon and sugar and toss around. Continue doing this until they’re all done. For even more flavor, mix 1 cup powdered sugar with a tablespoon of milk, mix and drizzle over the bites. ENJOY!
Note: I just fried 2 sides, but feel free to fry more to get a crispier texture. You might want to keep a close eye on them so that they donโt get hard and lose the great fluff of angel food cake.
Recipe Tips
Frying temperature: Getting the right oil temperature is usually a bit tricky when frying anything. One way I check for the right temperature is to stick the end of a wooden spoon in the oil. If the oil around the spoon bubbles, then itโs ready. If it sizzles to ferociously turn down the heat. If it doesn’t bubble after a second then turn up the heat. Once you think you have the right temp add a โtesterโ cube. It should take 1-2 minutes on the top and bottom.
Frying Alternative: If you have one, an AIR Fryer, is a great alternative to pan frying. Preheat the air fryer for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Place the cubes in a single layer and spray with cooking oil. Fry for 8-10 minutes, or until theyโre golden brown. Repeat with the remaining cubes.
Angel Food Cake: I want to note that I specifically made this recipe using Sara Lee brand Angel Food Cake. Once I finished frying the bites I let them drain on a paper towel. I have had some commenters use other brands of food cake only for their bites to absorb too much cooking oil leaving them unappetizing. Since I have not yet tried this recipe using other brands I recommend sticking to using the Sara Lee brand for best results. If you happen to use another brand with success, please leave a comment.
Dipping Sauce: If a churro isn’t awesome as it is your taste buds will certainly spin by adding a delicious sauce to dip them in

My favorite Angel Food Cake recipe is using a box of the dry mix ( one bag kind) and a can of crushed pineapple mix and pour into a 9X 13 cake pan and bake… Serve with Cool Whip.. MMMMMMMmmmm
The combination of two of my favorite things to eat cinnamon anything and my all time favorite cake, angel food. Would have never thought to do this. Can’t wait to try it. That would be awesome for a gathering that is serving finger foods, or just a snack. WooWho. yum yum yum.
Do the churro bites need to be served right away or do they keep for a day or two?
I definitely suggest serving these warm and fresh… don’t think they would taste as well a day later.
Angel food cake French Toast is awesome!!!
Is there a typo in this recipe? The drizzle doesn’t drizzle:
“mix 1 cup powdered sugar with a tablespoon and milk”
I’m sorry – it is suppose to say tablespoon OF milk. ๐
My favorite angle food cake
recipe is strawberry trifle.
My fave dessert with angel food cake is trifle… being British, I grew up on it. ๐ Can’t wait to try the churros though.
I want to make this for the fiesta themed party my friends and I are having on Saturday! Should I serve them warm? Was thinking of making a cream cheese type of dip to go with them ๐
Toast each cake slice, both sides with butter. Grill fresh pineapple slices. Top each toasted cake slice with a pineapple slice. Top pineapple slice with vanilla icecream. Top with hot fudge. Top with toasted coconut for garnish.
