Storing Tips
Make ahead of time. Prepare the casserole ahead of time and either store it in the fridge or freezer to bake it up later.
- Fridge: Assemble the simple tater tot casserole according to the recipe instructions, but do not add the tater tots. Let the meat mixture cool before covering it with plastic and storing it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to cook it add tater tots on top and bake.
- Freezer: Let the best tater tot casserole cool completely to prevent condensation and ice crystals from forming during freezing. Wrap tightly with plastic and again with foil. It can last in the freezer for up to 4 months. When ready to bake, remove the casserole from the freezer and bake for 45-60 minutes.
STORE. Leftover easy tater tot casserole can be divided into an airtight container or individual-sized containers and stored for 3-4 days in the refrigerator and 2-3 months in the freezer. Reheat leftovers in the microwave.
Recipe FAQ
If this option is not available at your grocery store you can use either a can of cream of mushroom soup or a can of cream of chicken soup. You may also use half of each can to create your own soup mix.
This casserole already provides a full meal with protein, fat, and carbs so I like to add a lighter side dish such as a side salad or an extra vegetable.
I usually use a 93/7 lean meat for the ground beef mixture. If you use one with a higher fat content, then be sure to drain the excess grease.
