Delicious and Easy Angel Food Cake Churro Bites are a tasty sugar and cinnamon treat topped with glaze that the whole family will love!
If you can’t get enough churro be sure to try Churro Toffee, Classic Churros, and Churro Cheesecake Bars.

Just like a churro
Sara Lee sent me some of their new Angel Food Cake to try out, and I’m happy to say that it was super delicious! The best thing about it is it’s thaw-and-serve and allows for quick and easy customization. With it, I decided to try a new recipe and came up with some Angel Food Cake Churro Bites.
Before I say anything more I just have to tell you my hubby’s response after trying them…He tasted it and said “Oh my heavens, these taste just like Churros!” My response, “That’s what they’re suppose to be!”
His reply, “I mean, like real churros… from Disneyland!” Needless to say, he REALLLLLY liked them and devoured them pretty quickly. The kids loved them too and kept asking for the “cinnamon treats”. I was happy that we had found another quick and delicious treat to have on Sunday mornings!

How to make Angel Food Cake Churro Bites
THAW. Let your Angel Food Cake thaw. Once thaw, cube the cake. My cubes were about 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches.
FRY. Heat vegetable oil on low-medium heat. Fry cubes until golden brown.
SEASON. Once golden brown, immediately put them in the bowl with cinnamon and sugar and toss around. Continue doing this until they’re all done. For even more flavor, mix 1 cup powdered sugar with a tablespoon of milk, mix and drizzle over the bites. ENJOY!
Note: I just fried 2 sides, but feel free to fry more to get a crispier texture. You might want to keep a close eye on them so that they don’t get hard and lose the great fluff of angel food cake.

Recipe Tips
Frying temperature: Getting the right oil temperature is usually a bit tricky when frying anything. One way I check for the right temperature is to stick the end of a wooden spoon in the oil. If the oil around the spoon bubbles, then it’s ready. If it sizzles to ferociously turn down the heat. If it doesn’t bubble after a second then turn up the heat. Once you think you have the right temp add a “tester” cube. It should take 1-2 minutes on the top and bottom.
Frying Alternative: If you have one, an AIR Fryer, is a great alternative to pan frying. Preheat the air fryer for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Place the cubes in a single layer and spray with cooking oil. Fry for 8-10 minutes, or until they’re golden brown. Repeat with the remaining cubes.
Angel Food Cake: I want to note that I specifically made this recipe using Sara Lee brand Angel Food Cake. Once I finished frying the bites I let them drain on a paper towel. I have had some commenters use other brands of food cake only for their bites to absorb too much cooking oil leaving them unappetizing. Since I have not yet tried this recipe using other brands I recommend sticking to using the Sara Lee brand for best results. If you happen to use another brand with success, please leave a comment.
Dipping Sauce: If a churro isn’t awesome as it is your taste buds will certainly spin by adding a delicious sauce to dip them in

Hello, this recipe looks great but how much oil am I supposed to use? Is it just a thin layer, or am I dunking the whole cake like I would a doughnut?
Thanks,
It’s maybe like 1/2in deep. It doesn’t need a lot, just enough to cover the pan & not even half the cake.
I’m wondering where this cake is typically sold. I haven’t been able to find it.
Thanks
S
I have gotten it at Walmart or my local Kroger store.
If you to forgo oil due to health reasons or you just don’t like fried foods, this is what I do. Using any ready made angel food cake,i slice it to fit my toaster, toast it, lightly butter it or use your favorite margarine, cut it into cubes, roll them in a bowl of cinnamon sugar. Pretty tasty! They always disappear quickly.
Thanks for sharing!! So glad you enjoy the bites!
Looks yummy but I don’t want to fry them in oil. Can I use a toaster oven?
Great recipe! I used some grocery store bakery Angel food and cooked in the air fryer. Cut into cubes, sprayed with veg oil and cooked on 350* for about 4-5min. Came out great and were gone within minutes!
Sounds delicious!! Thanks for giving the recipe a try!
This looks delicious! Have you tried this in an air fryer?
I haven’t, but I imagine it would work great in an air fryer too!
How many squares does this make? I’m serving several different desserts for a group of 75. I’d like at least 2-3 per guest.
I don’t think I have ever counted the exact number of cubes this makes. But, depending on the size of cubes you cut, you could make them go farther. The recipe serves about 6 people, and if they each had just 2-3 cubes, I think it could serve more than 6. Hope that helps!
I want to make the angel food cake churri bites! But the first instruction says to let it thaw….does that mean I have to freeze the cake after I bake it or…? Lol I may have missed a step?…. Can’t wait to try it!
The recipe calls for a pre-made Sara Lee Angel Food Cake (frozen), so that would need to thaw. But if you are baking an angel food cake, just let is cool so it’s room temp before cutting into cubes.
Yummy, yummy, yummy 😋 I love every recipe that I have and believe me I have a lot!!
Hi! I’m wondering how long these stay good for? If I make them a few hours in advance do they hold up ok?
They should hold up just fine for a couple of hours. They obviously are the yummiest fresh, but you can store them wrap in plastic wrap or place in a Ziploc bag and store at room temp for a few days or in the fridge for up to a week.
I hear some left over angel food cake – no idea what to do with it – and an air fryer. I had my doubts that this would come out really good, or even partially good, but they came out fantastic! I melted butter and drizzled it over the cubes before air frying, but I really don’t think it added anything! Just the air fried cubes and cinnamon sugar were the bomb! I made them in single layer batches, put some Pam on a sheet of foil and popped into my mini convection oven on airfryer mode. This is my new go-to for leftover angel food cake!
That sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing your new creation. Such a great use of leftover angel food cake!
My family loves these!! Any suggestions on helping them not be gushing with oil and every bite?! Angel food cake is like little sponges I don’t know if there’s anything that can be done to help reduce the amount of oil that it picks up. Maybe cooking it on a higher temperature?
They are oily. I would need to see if that would help. I place on paper towels, so it would soak in any extra oil.
DelisH!
So, glad you think so 🙂 Thank you!
How far in advance can you make these and di you store them.
I store them in an air tight container & I personally would make the morning of or the night before.
After I put the cinnamon and sugar on I put the squares on a baking SHEET Then I put the icing drizzle on them. DELICIOUS!
Happy to hear you liked it! Thank you!
I cant find a frozen saralee angelfood cake anywhere
I guess it doesn’t need to be frozen, so if you can just find it anywhere in your grocery store, that should work.
Can you make these a day ahead?
Yes, you could 🙂 Enjoy!!
Could these be made the day before. How many days do you think they would last. I’m thinking of making these for a bake sale….
They could. I probably wouldn’t do more than that, though.
I couldnt find the frozen version so i grabbed an already baked angel food cake from the grocery store bakery and it still totally worked! Everyone raved abOut cHurro bites at my taco bar themed book club. Finding the right temperAture for the oil was the hardest part.
Glad it was a hit!! Thank you for sharing the recipe 🙂
Can you use pound cake?
You bet!
AMAZINg!
Glad you think so!! Thank you 🙂
Are these Still good if you don’t them right away…liKe a few hours later, Or are tHey better hot?
They aren’t bad cooled, but I for sure like them warm 🙂
Made this tonight with a betty crocker Angel food cake mix i had. soooo good. i sprinkled powdered sugar on top and they remind me of fair food. delicious and a hit with all my friends.
Yay!! Love to hear that! Thank you so much for letting me know!
How many dose it serve?
For the angel food cake cinnamon bites, what is a good cinnamon to sugar ratio for the bowl you mix the cake bites in? One cup cinnamon half cup sugar? A cup of each? Thank you!!
One cup sugar to 1/4 cup of cinnamon 🙂 Hope you like them!
Was wondering if u could use the pound cake with this recipe
I am sure you could. I personally haven’t tried, but they are similar 🙂
Has anyone tried this recipe with a box cake? If so how did it turn out and I’m assuming no freezing needed since the cake gets thawed out….I didn’t fully read the recipe and started by making a cake ????????♀️ Trying to salvage the recipe now
do you have to make the cake or can you just buy an angel food cake from the grocery store?
Mine is just bought 🙂
can you use a store bought Angel Food Cake or must you make the one from the box?
I just made them and they are great! They Taste like elephant ears, without the cost or hassle.
I love this Idea, How long will the faux churros bites be good? Can I make them in advance, say one day? Hosting a really big Cinco de Mayo party!
A day ahead may be ok. I haven’t made them a day before, but the morning of. Keep them in an air tight container & they should be ok. Have fun!!
Can these be made ahead of time at all? Maybe reheated in an oven?
I wouldn’t make them too ahead of time. I haven’t re-heated them before. I guess I should find out 🙂 Sorry, to not be much help. I bet the morning of would be ok.
Our families is the trifle, always so pretty and even now at 83 yrs (young) it is my go too. Strawberries, pudding, whipping cream, bananas, Even have used bueberries, peaches. Whatever is in season. Just enjoy
That sounds so yummy!! Thank you so much!
This sounds delicious! We have a church event coming up….I plan on making these for that event!
They’ll be a hit!! Thanks so much for stopping by and have fun!
Hello. I would like to make something similar to this for a bake sale. Do you think they would package ok, or is this something that needs to be eaten immediately? Thanks!!
I honestly don’t know how they would hold up? They are usually gone, just like that. They should be ok, if it’s within the same day or so. Wish I was more help. Good luck!!
I do not think they would hold up for more than a few hours. They are soaked with grease. Lol. Delicious. But not sure you could use as a “dish to pass.”
I don’t usually comment on recipe sites but I have to be honest and tell you that the Angel Food Cake Churro Bites were inedible. I bought a store name brand of angel food cake and followed the recipe. The cake pieces soaked up so much oil that when you bit into them oil poured out. I had to throw them away – what a disappointment! Since angel food is so light the oil just soaks through it and in the recipe you state to dip the cake into the sugar/cinammon without draining. I’m not sure how yours tasted but I could not serve these for my book club because I felt sick after eating a few – too oily. Sorry – but not a keeper.
Hi Barbara – I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the churro bites. Unfortunately, I have not tried it with other brands of Angel Food Cake, but I can tell you they came out perfect when used with Sara Lee. As you can see from the comments, most did not have any issues with this, so I recommend trying them again but with Sara Lee Angel Food Cake. Sorry about that!
I had the same problem, I bought a store brand angel cake and they just soaked up the oil. I didn’t bother even cooking the rest. Can the Sara Lee be that much denser than a store bought cake? I’m going to try baking the rest and see how that works out. I agree with Barbara and the other person that said they soaked up oil.
This happened to me too but I used tongs and squeezed tons of oil out…. Then dipped in cinnamon and sugar. I feel like after I drained them that way, it was no more oil than at a fair, getting an elephant ear. A treat indeed. Not something I would eat regularly.
Hi Lil Luna! Have you tried baking the churro bites? I thought baking them, then brushing with melted butter before tossing in the cinnamon-sugar mix may work. What are your thoughts?
It may, but haven’t personally tried it! If you try it, please let me know, so I can pass that on to others:) Thanks so much!
Was wondering if the Churro bites need to be eaten when warm, or is this something that could be made in advance for a party?
They can definitely be made in advance. I’m all about prepping as much as I can ahead of time. I hope you give them a try:)
Hi! The Angel food churro bites look wonderful. Do you need to serve right away or could these be made the day before or 6 hours before? Thanks 🙂
I haven’t made them that far in advance, but they should be ok. I’m not sure if I’d do a day before, but the morning of, would probably work. Let me know if you try them!
can you use Sara Lee pound cake instead for churro bites? I couldn’t find angel food cake in freezer.
I haven’t tried that, but I’m sure it would work. If you try that, let me know if it works..I’d love to know!:)
Oh my gosh, the Church bites hands down. Food is love, right? I show love to my family, friends, neighbors, coworkers and every stray that I think needs a little TLC 😉 I can hear them all thanking you now!
Haha..food is love, for sure!! It’s the way to the heart:) Thanks so much!!
Love this recipe. I pit the cooked cubes on a paper towel first, there is a lot of oil. After dipping the cues into the sugar I let them cool and then shook a few pieces at a time in a bag to get off the excess sugar. My husband couldn’t stop eating them
What a easy recipe. I’m having a. Cooking demo for my ladies group at church and we will be using this recipe because it’s so easy. Angel Food Cake Churro is great.
Good luck with your demo and thank you for stopping by!! 😀
pound cake with vanilla pudding, toasted coconut, bananas/fruit, whip cream, cherry with chocolate syrup on top always, people really enjoy this
We enjoy Angel Food french toast stuffed with flavored cream cheese and peaches. Then topped with sprinkling of powdered sugar. I will be making these angel food churros as my family will love them!
Oh, wow – Angel Food cake French Toast stuffed with cream cheese and peaches?! That sounds AMAZING!!
I don’t know what Churros are, never heard of them. However, the recipe looks so good. I’m anxious to try it. And, I will, try it. Can’t wait.
Churros are a fried dough coated in cinnamon and sugar. 😉
Angel food churros, the are so easy and addictive. Great for game night. Thank you
Did you give them a try?
Pound cake strawberry shortcake… Yum! Similar to the French toast posted, sliced pound caked browned in butter, smothered with strawberries and whipped cream. Oh so good!
Angle food cake? My absolute favorite, out of the oven, just cooled enough to cut, still warm though with the top still all crispy! Gotta eat the whole thing while its crispy!!! Cupcakes rock, too!
Cake-blueberry trifle
can these be froze
My favorite Angel Food Cake recipe is using a box of the dry mix ( one bag kind) and a can of crushed pineapple mix and pour into a 9X 13 cake pan and bake… Serve with Cool Whip.. MMMMMMMmmmm
The combination of two of my favorite things to eat cinnamon anything and my all time favorite cake, angel food. Would have never thought to do this. Can’t wait to try it. That would be awesome for a gathering that is serving finger foods, or just a snack. WooWho. yum yum yum.
Do the churro bites need to be served right away or do they keep for a day or two?
I definitely suggest serving these warm and fresh… don’t think they would taste as well a day later.
Angel food cake French Toast is awesome!!!
Is there a typo in this recipe? The drizzle doesn’t drizzle:
“mix 1 cup powdered sugar with a tablespoon and milk”
I’m sorry – it is suppose to say tablespoon OF milk. 😉
My favorite angle food cake
recipe is strawberry trifle.
My fave dessert with angel food cake is trifle… being British, I grew up on it. 🙂 Can’t wait to try the churros though.
I want to make this for the fiesta themed party my friends and I are having on Saturday! Should I serve them warm? Was thinking of making a cream cheese type of dip to go with them 🙂
Toast each cake slice, both sides with butter. Grill fresh pineapple slices. Top each toasted cake slice with a pineapple slice. Top pineapple slice with vanilla icecream. Top with hot fudge. Top with toasted coconut for garnish.
French toast from pound cake is my favorite recipe but I have a feeling it could be replaced by thus churros recipe!
Definitely strawberry shortcake!!
Lemon Bars – so easy
1 box Angel food cake mix
2 cans lemon pie filling
Combine cake mix and pie filling; mix well. Bake @ 350° for 30 minutes. Watch carefully! Sprinkle with confectioners sugar when cool.
Strawberry shortcake or as my 2 year old says “strawberry orkcake”!
Strawberry shortcake….I know but I like a softer, firmer cake with my strawberries.
It’s my favorite because my mom always asked for it for her birthday – Angel Food cake with mocha frosting. Simple and yum!
I think I like angel food cake best when it’s simple! Whipped cream and fresh berries over cubes of cake and I’m a happy girl!
Strawberry shortcake
I like angel food cake with no extras. I do have friends that like flavored angel food cake. Want to make this recipe right now!
My favorite is Angel Food Cake layered with Nutella and Strawberries!!
We will see though after I try this yummy recipe!!
These look amazing! Pinned!
The Angel Food Cake Churro Bites are delicious and my fav … can barely get them all on a plate before they are gone! Thanks for posting!
Strawberries and whipped cream.
Just plain old angel food cake with strawberries on it (always with plenty of juice on it)!!!
My mom made one for each child’s birthday growing up. I love Angel food cake and strawberries.
You should know how traditional churros are made, before calling “churros” these kind of bites.
Greetings from Barcelona.
On my way to Publix to buy the cake- those churros look incredible!!!!
Not really a recipe, BUT I LOVE angel food cake with homemade whip cream with blueberries and strawberries! Delish!
So, can I just make one and then fry and dip in cinnamon and sugar????
Can’t wait to fix for my niece!
I have just got to try these.
Angel food Strawberry Pudding Trifle
Love strawberry shortcake, but these churro bites might just take over the lead! Cant wait to try them.
Thanks, Cherie! I love Strawberry Shortcake too but these Churro Bites are SO good too!!
I must try these!! That’s IF I have enough cake left to try the recipe LOL, I like plain angel food cake or sliced and toasted in the oven, I also like toasted pound cake!
SAME! It’d such a light and delicious treat!
Can’t wait to try this, my daughter LOVES churros but only the ones from Disneyland!! This is going to be our new favorite!
We are HUGE fans of Disneyland churros but love these bites too. Hope she likes them. 🙂
I cut the angel food in slices, put some strawberries in food processor, make a purée, put that on top angel food cake, then add sliced strawberries on top of that, then add whip cream, very easy, very yummy,
Ooooh – sounds great, Elaine!!!
Angle food cake with pineapple mixed in.
I am excited to try your angel food bites. Everything looks good even the guacamole. I would eat it but I’m sorry with the pumpkin it looks gross the way it is displayed although a fun idea. Great for Halloween
angel food cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.
I really want to make the snikerdoodle one. I have an unhealthy obsession with all things snickerdoodles.
Although this recipe looks fabulously evil, I prefer mine with strawberries and whipped cream. Simply delicious.
Both good. 😉
What a great idea…..also gonna try it with some cinnamon bread, or maybe blueberry bread as well!
Great idea!!
i’m a purest – strawberry shortcake
No-Fuss Pineapple Cake
1box angel food cake mix
1 can crushed or tidbit pineapple
Whipped Cream (or Cool Whip)
Pour pineapple into ungreased 9×13 inch baking dish. Stir cake mix into pineapple until mixed. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 min. Cool & serve topped with whipped cream.
Mmmm – sounds delicious!!
Going to have to try this one!
Do you use the small or large can of pineapple? Thanks!
Large. What a coincidence! We are staying with grandchildren for 21/2 weeks and I have the cake in the oven as we speak! (Email)
Strawberries on top of the puns cake with strawberry glaze and whip cream is a classic but these churro bites look amazing can’t wait to try
Our favorite way to eat angel food cake is the old standby of mashed strawberries with whipped cream. Yum!
My very favorite angel food cake recipe is one that my grandmother has been making me for about 25 years. Split a cake in half, layer of cool whip, layer of fresh strawberries and blueberrys, another layer of cool whip, top it with the other cake half. Wrap it up in saran and stick it in the freezer for a bit so it will hold its shape. Cut and enjoy! It’s the best summer dessert ever!
We like strawberry delight. Would love to win this. Those Churro bites look very good.
Yum Angel food cake with chocolate ganache and raspberries
OMG. YUM
I love angel food cake with strawberries and cream on top. Simple but so YUMMY! These look awesome. I can’t wait to try and make them. Thanks!!!
Love angel food cake topped with chocolate pudding!
This sounds super yummy! When I was a kid, my sister and I would slice the angel food cake, spread butter on it, and toast it in the oven. Soooo good! Makes me want some now. 🙂
My fav is my mom’s stuffed angel food cake but I am going to try the churros!!!
Angel Food with Strawberries is the best. BUT….I think the Churros takes the cake!! Get it….cake?!!
LOL!!!
One of my favorite angel food cake recipes:
I like to make the following icing for angel food cake:
Beat with electric mixer 4 minutes –
• 1 ½ cups cold milk
• 1 package instant pudding (lemon is one of my favorites but you can use any flavor)
Fold in 1 (8 oz.) Cool Whip.
Refrigerate overnight.
Frost angel food cake next day.
I love to use Angel Food cake with Watergate Salad. Spoon the salad over slices of the cake, sooo good.
How do you recommend storing them?
I would store them in an air-tight container… if there are leftovers. 😉
How many calories for one cube?
My DH can’t resist buying the Churro sticks at Taco Bell. Now they have something new to us. they have some type of cream filling inside and are shaped like in a ball or shape of a party roll..Yummy! We love angel food cake and would love to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing it.
I love this Idea and I love Churro’s. My daughter in love introduced them to me..
My favorite angel food cake recipe is a tie between the
Churro angel food cake bites and the strawberries & cream
Truffle. I love to bake and try new recipes!! (:
-Monica
These are amazing and addictive! My family could not stop eating them!
Haha! Neither could we!! So glad they were a hit. 🙂
Oh my goodness! I love churros! I am going to try this very, very soon. I’ve never used angel food cake for more than just cake so I don’t have a fav recipe (till now!). Thanks for sharing this one.
You are welcome. You will love these bites – they are so easy and SOOO delicious!
Angel food fresh strawberries. And whipped cream-the real stuff.
Cut the angel food cake in half, scoop out some of the middle and fill with chocolate pudding. put the top back on and drizzle with chocolate sauce.
Looks like these Churro Bites are going to be my fav!!! Thanks for sharing!
When I was growing up my grandmother always made this for us and we called it grandma’s goop, loved it then and love it more today!!!
Strawberry shortcake….until now!!!
Cannot wait to make these this weekend!
My fav recipe is the Pineapple you mix a can of crushed pineapple w/ an Angel Food cake mix and bake comes out light & fluffy packed with pineapple goodness easy & Yummy
Looks good! Do you see a problem using Coconut Oil instead of vegetable oil? Not a fan of vegetable oil, and have switched to coconut oil.
Thanks
I love angel food cake and fresh strawberries. Your churros will be next on my plate!
This might be a dumb question, but do you think there is any chance that you could bake them instead of frying them, spray them, and then toss them with the cinnamon sugar? Or would that not work?
I would definitely give it a try. I would try it out at 350 for 10 minutes and go from there. 🙂
Well I do like it just plain but I have been know to eat it with strawberries and homemade whipped cream. 🙂 and it does happen to be my favorite! But I am definitely going to try the churro bites.
You will love them – SO delicious!
Tried the recipe, was very good, except we made the angel food cake by using Duncan Hines. Wouldn’t recommend doing that now, because it adds a nutty flavor to the churro bites and it wasn’t quite appetizing.
I would definitely use the Sara Lee Angel Food Cake next time. It’s delicious!!
I like to slice the cake up like French fries, fry them up and make a raspberry or strawberry sauce (catsup). Kids love them.
Ooooh – great idea! I will have to try that. I have an Angel Food Cake in the freezer now! Thanks for the idea. 🙂
Love it plan with fresh strawberry sauce. The Churro recipe looks amazing!
You will love it – seriously, so good!
Although there is angel food with strawberries and whipped cream, I love cutting it into little pieces and “noshing” on it. Just enough to curb my hunger while definitely satisfying me sweet tooth
I wanted something fresh and light to serve at my daughter’s graduation. Her favorite cake is Angel food cake so I decided to mix drained crushed pineapple and mandarins Orange pieces with coolwhip. I made the Angel food cake in a traditional tube pan, once the cake was cool I carefully sliced the cake in 3 equal layers. I then spooned the fruit and cool whip mixture evenly on each layer allowing the filling to “ooze” out just a little around the sides. So it would be bottom layer of cake, filling, next layer of cake, filling, the top with top of cake . Ice with mire cool whip and fruit pieces. Chill to set. Beautiful and delicious.
I am excited to try the churro bites. A big reminder of our time living overseas in Venezuela.
WOW – your dessert sounds amazing. I’ll have to give it a try – thanks!!
Angel Food Cake French Toast
WOW, was this amazing! I happened to get this Sara Lee angle food cake for half off and I could not resist ripping it out of the freezer to make these tasty bites. Thanks for being so creative.
You’ll have to let me know how it goes! We LOVED Them. 🙂
Diced angel food cake cubes layered with chocolate pudding, cherry pie filling, and whipped cream in crystal bowl makes an impressive and delicious desert!
Mmmm – sounds delicious!!
I don’t know what I did wrong, but these came out terrible for me! They were so saturated in vegetable oil, we couldn’t even eat them. They sounded amazing, but somehow I just didn’t get it right.
I’m so sorry to hear that Liz. Did you use the Sara Lee Angel Food Cake? And how much oil did you use?
Oh my god me too, saturated with oil and in the trash. I didnt use Sara Lee but all angel food cakes are pretty much the same….absorbent…. :0(
Hmmm, all I know is that it worked PERFECTLY with the Sara Lee Angel Food Cake so I would suggest trying that next time. Sorry about that. :/
How much oil did you use? For me, it came about halfway up the cake cubes, maybe a little less. I had the oil pre- heated and they weren’t in the pan very long. I just saw them instantly suck up the oil like sponges, which now that I think about it, seems to make sense since Angel food cake is like as sponge 🙂 I will have to look for Sara Lee and try again, hopefully they sell it in Canada 🙂 I wonder how this recipe would work within pound cake…….
I know the giveaway is over but this is totally pinned. Great idea!
Thank you so much, Averie!!
until now my favorite is to make strawberry shortcake but now I think my new favorite has to be these churros. They are fantastic
Did you give them a try, Linda? We thought they were so easy and so yummy!
Oh my heavens!! These look incredible!! I haven’t even tried them – and can already tell you that THESE are my favorite angel food cake recipe!
Thank you, Melissa! You should definitely give them a try – they are SO good. 🙂
My Mom-in-law has an unquenchable LOVE for angel food cake. I’ll have to make these for her, they look awesome!
My family loves Angel Lush but I have a feeling this will be our new favorite angel food cake recipe! I can’t wait to try it.
with ice cream and chocolate sauce
Angel Food cake with chocolate syrup on it…mmmmmmm!!!! Although this churro recipe will definitely need to be tried out!
These look ridiculous. I can’t wait to try them! My favorite angel food cake recipe is my heavenly heath trifle. I cube an angel food cake and layer about 1/3 of it on the bottom of a trifle dish. top with chocolate pudding, some heath bits and then cool whip. repeat. repeat again. if you are feeling really divine, drizzle some fudge sauce on the top! Then…to make it more fun…I leave a bottle of Godiva Chocolate Liquer or Patron XO Cafe next to the trifle dish so the adults can add a pop to their dessert!!
If I had to dig back through the vault of memories of my families baking endevors, Angel Food cake has to be atop that list. I can remember sitting as a little girl on the counter top while I watched three generations of women madly baking around one another, weaving in and out of each other, each one in the others way and everyone enjoying the chaos. My great grandma Ezop had a classic angel food recipe that was a staple at our Thanksgiving dinners. She would take out her trifle dish and cube up the angel food cake (she usually used a homemade one, but any bought one would suffice). She then mixed up a pumpkin spice frosting to go over top of it {1 block of cream cheese, 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 1 tsp each of vanilla extract, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice and 5 Tbs of brown sugar}. She would finish off the layer with crumbled-up gingerbread cookies and repeat until the trifle was filled to the top. This has always been a favorite recipe of mine, and I hope that someone else out there gets just as much joy out of it as I always have. (:
Igloo cake– it’s an icebox cake made with chunked angel food cake & German chocolate deliciousness, topped with cool whip. So yummy!
This recipe looks delicious! I like angel food cake even plain, topped just with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. 🙂
So I have a question. I tried making this and I don’t know what went wrong but my angel food cake soaked up all the oil in the frying pan and the pieces were so heavy like little sponges. I was so exited when I saw this recipe then it all went wrong. Yours looks so good.
Hmmm…. how much oil did you use? And did you use Sara Lee Pound Cake?
You might need to use a thermometer when you fry. If the cubes soaked up all the oil, chances are good that your oil wasn’t hot enough.
My favorite way to use Sara Lee pound cake is sliced with fresh strawberries and sweetened whipped cream. Can’t wait to try out the Churros Bites!
I’m going to have to try this the next time I make an angel food cake. We have to have ours gluten free, but now I know what to do with any leftovers!
My favorite recipe for Angel Food Cake is made by cutting the top quarter off, scooping a tunnel inside of the cake all the way around, and filling it with Neapolitan ice cream. After packing what cake pieces didn’t get eaten, on top of the ice cream, I place the top back on and frost the whole thing with whipped cream, then freeze it for several hours. This make a wonderful birthday cake, too, especially for the summer months.
Goodness – these little bites are irresistable! These would definitely be the first thing I make!
Pumpkin angel food cake bars.
i love to take Angel Food cake and cut it into pieces , put it into bowl or nice dessert dish, and then put spoons of cherry pie filling on top of it and then add Cool Whip on top of that. For a large group i just use a large bowl and layer it all up. It is fabulous! My family loves it!

Sometimes I wish I’d be a little bit more creative in the kitchen, the only ways I make angel food cake is plain , with a chocolate drizzle or strawberry shortcake. Your recipe is so original and creative plus it looks delicious. I’m keeping it mind for my next baking adventure 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Plain angel food cake for me!
Well, before reading this my favorite angel food cake recipe had to be the classic strawberry shortcake. But I think after I try this, angel food cake churro bites might just take the cake! 😉
I love Sara Lee Poundcake for my Mango Shortcake! I make a Mango Curd and pour it over the poundcake, then top with Coconut Ice Cream! It is a trip to the islands in a dessert! Fantastic!
I have used angel food cake to dip in chocolate fondue style and that is pretty tasty. Or there is the strawberries and angle food cake that is an oldie but so delicious!

I love to make a berries & cream cake – carve out the middle and fill it with whipped cream and berries, then frost w more whipped cream and top with berries!
My favorite recipe is to chop up the angel food cake and soak it in rum then add it to a bowl, cover with strawberry jelly, fruit of the season and then top with custard, it is delicious!
I love using angel food cake to make strawberry shortcake!
my favorite angel food recipe is to serve slices warm with strawberries and a sweet powdered sugar drizzle. those churros sure look like they would be delicious though.
My favorite angel food cake recipe is just plain angel food (no frosting or anything). It’s what I always want for my birthday cake. However, I do have two other angel food cake recipes I like.
1. Take a box of angel food cake mix and put it in a 9×13″ baking dish. Add the contents of a 20oz can of crushed pineapple to the pan. Stir in until mixed and bake at 350 for 35 minutes. Cool upside down. (can also substitute canned blueberry filling for the pineapple). Another bonus is If you eat it without whipped cream, it’s only 2 weight watcher points.
2. Take a box of angel food cake mix and a box of any other flavor cake mix and empty the packets of both into a gallon size zip-lock storage bag. Shake until mixed together. Then take a small dessert dish (approx 4oz size) & put 3 tablespoons of the cake mix into the dish, add 2 tablespoons of water, & microwave on high for 1 minute. You then have a single serving cupcake. It’s called 3-2-1 cake and it’s obviously very simple to make. My favorite flavors are strawberry, lemon, and chocolate.
Your recipe looks delicious. I wonder if it could be done by spraying the pieces with cooking spray, sprinkling them with the cinnamon & sugar, then baking them. That way you’d still get the crunch without quite as much fat. 🙂
Angel food cake any old way is fine with me, but my absolute favorite is with fresh strawberries and whipped cream!
You can never go wrong with strawberry shortcake with angel food.
Just plain 🙂
I love angel food cake mixed with a can of crushed pineapple. Tasty little treats that kids and adults LOVE and are weight watchers friendly for those watching their points.
I like to add come cocoa powder to my angel food mix to make a chocolate angel food cake – But I would have to say this just might be my new favorite….looks delicious!
I love good old fashioned strawberries and fresh cream although I need to try those churros!
I have a recipe for an angel food cake where you split the cake in layers and fill and frost it with a mocha whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Yum! Thanks for the chance!
I love slicing the cake and layering marshmallow and chocolate in the middle. Then, I cook it in a little butter in the skillet. So yummy!
I love making birthday icecream cake with it…angel food cake with layers of our favorite icecream and covered with cool whip like icing then drizzle with fudge and Caramel …yum!

I love the good old fashioned “Angel food cake Strawberry Shortcake” (which is just AFC with strawberries and whipped cream.) Yum
Yum! I’m going to fry these in coconut oil. My mother inlaw makes a yummy 4th of July/Memorial Day cake using a pound cake, berries and cool whip.
BTW, at the top it says 1/2 cup cinnamon, farther down with the pictures it says 1/4 cup cinnamon. I’m betting 1/4 cup is the right amount, but wanted to be sure. Which is it?
1/4 cup is right. Thanks for catching that. Updated the recipe. 🙂

Love my grandmas’s angel food cake with hershey’ chocolate syrup on top
Years ago my gram would bake a loaf angel food cake, slice it horizontally into 3 layers, spread with homemade whipped cream and sliced bananas. It was quick and easy and good, good, good. I still make it except with store bought angel food cake and whipped cream in a can. Not as good but really darn close.
My favorite angel food recipe is a filling of berries and whip cream and covered with more whip cream
I love angel food cake topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream!
I just love plain Angel Food. It was something my grandma made for me every time I went to her house.
I’ve never been a big angel food cake fan…too plain, but this recipe makes me rethink that. These look yummy!

just plain angel food cake and strawberries.
I love it plain, but sometimes I like a little chocolate ice cream on top
Well…before I saw THIS recipe, lol…
My favorite angel food cake recipe is always the way my mom used it…in a trifle (although she called it a truffle!) She would layer angel food cake, then white chocolate pudding, then strawberries & bananas, then whipped cream, and then start all over again, then she’d finish with strawberries on top. So pretty, and so delicious! She’s been gone 10 years now, but I still have the trifle dish she bought for me & I make it during the summer.
Love Angel Food cake with fresh berries and whipped cream. Not a recipe but a favorite!
Strawberry shortcake!
Angel food cake cut up in cubes, mixed with cherry pie filling, topped with Cool Whip. Mom made it for us growing up, I made it for my kids as they grew up, & my kids make it for their kids now.
Angel Food cake is kind of the “go to dessert” at my house. Since my husband and children like it so well, I keep it around for quick desserts or if company shows up unexpectedly (the bars freeze nicely–Looking forward to the new Sara Lee product!). I drizzle slices with my homemade blueberry sauce; I serve it cut in cubes for the chocolate fountain or fondue (I toast it a bit for this); I tear it in pieces and make my favorite dessert “Heavenly Banana Pudding” (banana slices, Cool Whip and Instant Banana Pudding mixed–sometimes I even drizzle servings with Hershey’s Special Dark chocolate sauce); and there is, of course my husband’s request of layering pieces of angle food cake with strawberries and Junket strawberry-jel sauce and whipped cream (looks pretty in a trifle bowl).
But this time I think the bar in my cupboard is going to be turned into Saturday morning Churro Bites.
These would be delicious…thanks for the recipe
I like it with pineapple, yum!
Genius! What a great- easy- fun recipe! I love the idea 🙂 I have always been a classic angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream kinda girl but I may be converted forever!
My favorite has been strawberry shortcake with the Sara Lee cake however the Churro bites mite take over first place. They look great!
Oh my…that looks sinfullly delicious!! I’ve never had churros, but it must be amazing. I’m adding this to my recipes. My family favorite for Sara Lee Pound cake is to just add fresh strawberries and drizzle with a little powdered sugar frosting. Amazing!! Of course, that’s IF my husband can resist from eating it all just plain (he has a serious sweet tooth). Before we were married, he would be atleast one pound cake a week and eat in two days by himself…lol.
Thanks for the recipe 🙂
I believe my new favorite will be Churros if not stawberry short cake drizzled with chocolate sauce
I’m going to make those churro bites ASAP! I like to make peach shortcake with angel food cake.
I love mine topped with strawberries and whipped cream.
My favorite is just plain ol’ angel food cake. When I was a child we used to eat dinner every Sunday at my grandma’s house – and angel food cake is what she made for dessert every time. She was famous for it!
Oh Kristyn- seriously my jaw is hanging open right now. Angel Food cake is one of my favorites. I typically just eat it plain & I definitely have a hard time sharing. But this takes it to a whole new level. I’m practically drooling.
My mom always made me an Angel Food cake with fluffy icing for my birthday. I think Angel food cake is awesome by itself, but I would surely give this recipe a try. Another quick recipe is angel food cake mix with a can of crushed pineapple. Just mix and bake – delicious!
I like Angel Food Cake Trifle with lemon pudding and lots of whipped cream!
I like angel food cake and crushed pineapple
My favorite is Strawberry Shortcake, however these come in a close 2nd.
I like my angel food cake layered with strawberries and whipped cream!
