Chocolate dipped pretzels are a tasty sweet treat that is especially wonderful for Christmas or other holidays.
How to make Chocolate Covered Pretzels
PREP. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
MELT. In a small pot, add chocolate wafers and heat on LOW. Melt wafers making sure to stir continuously until all melted and smooth.
DIP. Remove from heat and place a pretzel on a fork and dip into the chocolate. Tap off excess, making sure to run fork along the edge of the pot and place on parchment paper linked baking sheet. Repeat this step until half the pretzels are dipped. There should be leftover that will be used to drizzle. Set aside.
MELT. Now, melt the white chocolate the same way. Stir continuously and once smooth, remove from heat and dip the remainder of the pretzels in the white chocolate making sure to remove excess chocolate.
DRIZZLE. There should be leftover chocolate from each for drizzling. Dip a fork in the opposite chocolate as the base and drizzle back and forth over the pretzels. Repeat this for the rest of the pretzels with the opposite chocolate.
COOL & STORE. Let pretzels set. Place in fridge to speed up the process. Store in container or bag in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
More Melting Methods + TIPS
Other ways to melt include a double boiler or even easier – the microwave! To do that, heat for 30 seconds and then stir. Repeat until the candy coating is melted and smooth. Reheat if it begins to cool and harden.
A benefit to the double boiler is that once the chocolate is hot it stays melted. If you don’t have a double boiler you can easily make your own. Simply fill the bottom of a pot with 2-3 inches of water. Bring the water to a boil, then turn down the heat. Place a glass or metal bowl on top of the pot. Add the wafers to the bowl and let it melt.
Chocolate Foot: A chocolate foot is created when excess coating pools around the base of whatever has been dipped. To help prevent this allow the excess coating to drip off before placing on the parchment paper to set up. If you do notice chocolate beginning to pool, use a toothpick to “cut” the pool away from the treat. If a foot has set, simply break/trim it off once it’s completely dry.
Decorating + Storing
I love the classic dark with white chocolate decorating, but there are so many fun ways you can dip the pretzels. Some include:
- Dip only half the pretzel
- You can sprinkle on different toppings (even though holiday sprinkles are amazing and easy to change out), or do some of the following:
- crushed candy canes
- crushed Oreos
- chopped nuts
- sweetened coconut
- sugar crystals
Storage: Chocolate covered pretzels will last at room temperature for 2-3 weeks. Store them in an airtight container and keep them in a cool dry place.
