Family Favorite M and M Cookies

Our family is obsessed with cookies!

This week’s M and M Cookies recipe is so easy and fun! It’s always a FAVORITE with the kiddos {even with the adults!!} And what’s great about this recipe is that it’s quick and the cookies ALWAYS turn out soft. 🙂

We’ve always loved M&M Cookies in our home and the kids love that they can help by adding the M&MS on top before they get baked. I liked that it’s a combination of cookie and candy, and what’s not to love about that?!

For this recipe, we modified our Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie by taking out the chocolate chips and filling it with crushed M&Ms and candies on top. The result is a soft and chewy candy-filled cookie that is great for adults and kids.

How to Make M&M Cookies

As we mentioned, these soft candy cookies are very simple and take just 10 minutes to get in the oven.

PREHEAT. To make these cookies, gather your ingredients and preheat the oven to 350.

WET INGREDIENTS. Cream the butter, oil (you can also opt to do just 1 cup of butter instead of ½ cup butter + ½ cup vegetable oil) and sugars. Add the eggs and beat until fluffy.

DRY INGREDIENTS. Add the remaining ingredients (all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, vanilla and crushed M&Ms). Mix until combined. Add ½ cup chopped M&Ms and mix.

SCOOP. Scoop onto a greased cookie sheet. Top with 5 – 6 M&Ms and bake for about 7 – 9 minutes.

We love to enjoy these warm, but they’re also great room temp. The candies are the perfect addition and make these cookies irresistible.

Recipe Tips + FAQs

Can you freeze M&M cookies? Of course! You can freeze in cookie scoops (just let thaw completely before baking) or as whole cookies. These will last in your freezer for 3-4 months if wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in a freezer-safe bag.

How to store? Place in an air-tight container and leave on the counter for 3-4 days (although we doubt they will last that long!)

What is the best way to crush M&Ms? We use a nut chopper, but you can also add them to a ziploc bag and crush with the bottom of a cup. How many crushed M&Ms you include is up to you. 😉

Can you make bars out of this? Indeed, you can! And we have several recipes on the site where we did just that. Be sure to check out these posts for cookie/cake bars that are topped with M&Ms.

We love that you can color coordinate them for holidays and events depending on the colors of M&Ms you use (And we know that M&Ms now come in every color, which makes it that much better)!

Some of our favorite M&Ms to use in our desserts include:

  • Classic M&Ms
  • Peanut Butter M&Ms
  • Mini M&Ms
  • White Chocolate M&Ms
  • Peppermint M&Ms

Using these different M&Ms change the color but also the flavor. With the Peanut Butter M&Ms, we often add peanut butter chips too. We love adding toffee bits when we use the mini M&Ms, white chocolate chips with the white chocolate candies and even Andes Peppermint pieces with the peppermint candies.

So many great ways to make and change up this delicious cookie!

Some recipes on the site include: Chocolate M&M Cookies, Mint Oreo M&M Cookies, Peanut Butter M&M Cookies.

These were great! I used mini M&Ms and didn’t chop them up, definitely would if I used regular sized. Anyway, these were delicious and will definitely make them again.

SO simple and SO good! I have put salted caramel chips in, chocolate chips and my all time fav reeses peanut butter chips and reeses pieces on top! I don’t even have to get out my big mixer! I scoop mine using a medium size scoop and cook for 8 minsutes, I love that I don’t have to chill before baking. I usually freeze about a dozen so we don’t end up eating them all in one day!

    1. Ooh the peanut butter chips and Reeses pieces sound amazing! These cookies are really versatile which makes them fun. Love all the yummy variations you have made. Thanks for sharing!!

I made these foe my daughters’ birthday party 2 years ago and it’s been a cookie staple for our family wver since! The tip to chop up the m&ms and throw them in is key!

I have been searching for a great M&M recipe and I have definitely found it!!! These have the perfect balance where neither the cookie or the m&m overtake the flavor. The flavors blend together flawlessly and you get a great cookie with yummy bites of chocolate. So good!!!

    Such great flavor.
My friend asked for her favorite cookie (m&m cookies) for her wedding reception. I tried 2 other m&m cookie recipes, this one was the best. Soft, chewy and so good!

I personally found that the cookie sheets make a big difference in baking times. Thick aluminum doesn’t work as well as the thin older ones. I got better results with 12 minute baking time.

    1. Sorry to hear that! Perhaps they were baked longer… that can result in harder cookies? Not totally sure, but thanks for giving the recipe a try!

      1. Ericka exactly what I was thinking. She admitted she did something wrong and gave a 1 star🙄. Makes no sense to me. I’ve been using this website for cooking and baking for years and it’s one of my favorite websites!!

  7. This is my go to recipe EVERY single time I make M&M cookies. So much so that not only me but my kids as well have memorized the ingredients and amounts. Obviously the cookies that didn’t turn out for some people clearly is not because of the recipe! Not all people are bakers. Just sayin’. 🤣

    1. LOL we’ve memorized it too and made it really easy to memorize by doubling the batch. Everything is either a 1 or 2 and 6c flour. Nobody minds doubling the batch to make it easy to remember.

    1. We just list however many you want… some may like more or less. A good idea is about how many chocolate chips you would use. A good starting point is 1 1/2-2 cups, give or take.

This is the most popular one we use!!! We LOVE changing out the m&ms for whatever holiday/season it is to make them more festive!!

Did the recipe get changed/modified? I used to make these a lot and they were moist/the dough was moist. Now the dough is just crumbly…… my husband has even made the comment they don’t taste like they used to and the dough is dry and the dough crumbles in the oven when they bake.

I looked at so many recipes and read all the reviews before deciding on this one. I’ve tried many of your other recipes and none have disappointed. This was another winner.
