So Fluffy – So Delicious!

There’s nothing quite like a weekend morning breakfast of fluffy French Toast smothered in real maple syrup!

French toast is one of my most favorite breakfast dishes. It is full of flavor and spiced to perfection. I even love to whip these up for dinner sometimes. I mean anytime is a good time for breakfast, right?!

No on likes soggy french toast. This recipe has a secret ingredient-flour! The flour helps to make the liquid more of a โ€œbatterโ€ which will yield extra fluffy and delicious french toast.

How to Make Fluffy French Toast

Bread: You can choose any bread that you’d like. Be sure that you have thick slices ( ยพโ€-1โ€) and let the bread get stale. The reason you want stale bread is because it absorbs the custard without getting too gloppy. If you donโ€™t have time to let your bread dry out you can pop them in the oven for 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees F.

EGG MIXTURE. Use a large mixing bowl and measure out flour. Slowly whisk in the milk. Next, whisk in the salt, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla and sugar until the mixture is smooth.

HEAT. Use a griddle or frying pan and heat to medium heat.

SOAK. One at a time soak the slices in the mixture until saturated. Whisk the mixture between each slice of bread.

COOK & SERVE. Cook the bread until each side is golden brown. Serve Hot.

Cooking Tips:

  • Be sure to let the toast sit in the custard long enough for the mixture to absorb the entire slice of bread.
  • Watch the temp: Too hot will burn the outside before the inside can cook. Too low and the entire toast is too soft and chewy. You want a crisp outside with a custard like inside.
  • Mix the egg batter thoroughly. Make sure the egg whites are fully incorporated or you’ll see a nicely browned toast with a bright soggy egg white spot.

Toppings + Storing

Favorite Toppings: You can’t go wrong with a classic buttermilk syrup, but there are so many other options you can have as well. Some favorites include:

  • fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries)
  • powdered sugar
  • Nutella
  • different flavors of jam or jelly
  • peanut butter
  • bacon bits
  • whipped cream
  • butter
  • lemon curd

Leftovers: Store the toast in an airtight container within two hours of cooking it. It can be refrigerated for 3-4 days or frozen for 1-2 months. To prepare them to be frozen, arrange the toast in a single layer on a baking pan. Freeze for 2-3 hours or until solid, then transfer the toast to an airtight freezer safe container.

Single servings can be reheated in the microwave or toaster oven. To reheat several at a time arrange the desired amount on a baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 375ยฐF and bake for 5-8 minutes or until hot.

Great recipe. Only thought, custard needs to be a little thicker for coating, makes it less soggy. I added “Cinnamon Toast Crunch” sprinkles on top of French Toast for little extra ‘flavor’

I’ve never used flour in French toast custard before. I’ll have to try as I’m in search of a better recipe than what I currently have.
