Better than anything cake is one of the best and easiest cake recipes you’ll ever try! For more rich and chocolatey cakes, try Chocolate Sheet Cake, Oreo Pudding Poke Cake, or Mississippi Mud Cake.
Rich and delicious cake
I love to share simple and delicious desserts, and I have a great one for you today!
This is called better than anything cake (aka better than sex cake or heath bar cake). It’s a chocolate cake with all sorts of delicious things poured over it—like caramel and sweetened condensed milk.
It also has Whipped Cream and toffee bits on top making it even more delicious!
This poke cake is perfect for sharing, and especially great for hot weather or holidays where all you crave is something sweet and cool.
How to Make better than anything cake
This cake recipe is simple, delicious, and tastes like Heath Candy Bars!
CAKE. Make the cake according to the package directions. Poke the warm cake with the bottom of a wooden spoon to make several holes.
SAUCES. Pour sweetened condensed milk over the cake and into holes. Drizzle Caramel Topping on top of the cake as well. Chill the cake for 2-3 hours.
TOPPINGS. Right before serving, top with Whipped Cream and sprinkle with toffee bits.
The Chocolate Cake Base
This recipe calls for a chocolate cake base. There are several types of box cake mix that can be used such as Devil’s Food cake mix, German Chocolate cake mix, or a simple Chocolate Fudge.
The box of cake mix I use is 15.25 and can be baked in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
If you have a favorite chocolate cake recipe (we love this one!) go ahead and use that or buy a plain chocolate cake from the bakery and then add the Caramel Sauce, condensed milk, and toppings.
Recipe Tips
Milk. Be sure to buy sweetened condensed milk and not evaporated milk.
Toppings. Change the toffee bits for crushed-up Reese’s, Oreos, Butterfingers, Heath Bars, chocolate chips, or chopped nuts.
Cake flavors. Instead of chocolate, use other flavors such as Carrot, Caramel, or Vanilla.
Making Ahead and Storing
Make ahead of time. The base of this Chocolate Poke Cake dessert can be made 1-2 days in advance. Store it, covered, in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.
Add the cool whip and candy to the top of cake right before serving.
FREEZE. Wrap the entire baking pan with plastic wrap and again with aluminum foil. Freeze for 1-2 months. Thaw and add the whipped topping and candy bits.
Recipe FAQ
Real Whipped Cream, made from scratch, can be used in place of the Cool Whip. Just don’t use the stuff that comes in the spray can!
This cake really is better served cold! I recommend chilling for at least one hour, if not longer. Plus, the cake needs to be completely cooled before adding the whipped topping, otherwise it will melt.
