Dark coated Blackout Candy Apples are the perfect fall and Halloween treat. They come together in only 15 minutes!!
I love apple season, filled with some of my fav treats like Apple Brickle Dip , Snicker Apple Salad and Slow Cooker Apple Crisp. When I saw these spooky blackout candy apples I knew I had to try them!

One of my favorite things to do in the Fall is check out all the fun Halloween Magazines that come up. Going through them to find new recipes and inspiration is so fun! Do you do that too?
My mom does the same thing and we’re always asking each other if we saw that one recipe or one craft in that one magazine.
I recently found this Blackout Candy Apples recipe from Betty Crocker that I knew I would have to try. I’d never made Candy apples before (although I’ve done caramel apples), but knew I’d have to try out these black beauties.
The kids loved chowing down on these Halloween candy apples yesterday. The kids said they reminded them of the Poisoned apples from Snow White, and I agree. They’re a bit spooky!
how to make candy apples
PREP. Place parchment paper onto a cookie sheet and spray with cooking spray. Wash your apples and let dry. Recipe will make 8-10 apples depending on their size. Add your skewers and/or striped straws.
SUGAR COATING. Cook sugar, water and corn syrup in a pot over medium heat. Stir occasionally until sugar is dissolved and starts to boil. Cooking for 10-12 minutes or until candy thermometer reaches 300 degrees. Remove from heat and stir in cinnamon flavoring and food coloring. Mix well.
No thermometer? No problem! You can cook until a small amount of mixture dropped into a cold cup of water separates intro hard candy.
DIP. Dip each apple in mixture to quickly coat it and place apples on cookie sheet. Let set.
Serving Suggestions:
- If you are giving these away as goodies consider placing the hardened apples in cupcake liners and then in cellophane bags.
- Consider cutting the apple into kid-friendly slices for easy serving
- For parties you can do either slices or whole apples
Recipe Tips
I love how deliciously evil these candy apples look. They’re the perfect Halloween Treat! If you want to embellish them up a bit I came across a few ideas on how to do so. Be creative and Enjoy!
- Use thinly piped white frosting to add spooky ghostly faces on the coating
- for a rustic, witchy look use sharpened sticks from your yard instead of straws. Be sure to wash and dry them first.
- place a spider ring around the base of each straw
- add an assortment of candy eyeballs all over the black coating
If youโre having trouble keeping the coating on the apples, try the following:
- Keep the coating just hot enough to melt together, but not too hot that it slides right off.
- Once you wash the wax off of the apple, use a fine grit sandpaper to rough up the skin, but do not break the skin. This will make โgroovesโ for the candy coating to cling to.
- Make sure the apples are cold and dry.
You may notice some coating pool at the bottom of the apple, or a “candy foot”. I kind of like how this looks. With the black coating the foot makes it even more creepy. However, if you would rather get rid of the โcandy footโ simply trim away larger pieces, then, using your fingers, gently smooth out the remainder of the coating.
How to Store Candy Apples
Candy apples store quite well. STORE at room temperature, or in the fridge. Unfortunately, they cannot be frozen for later.
- Countertop: Apples that have not been pierced with a stick can last at room temperature for about 7 days.
- Refrigerator: Apples that have been pierced should be kept in the fridge and will last for up to 2 weeks. Use a container that will allow for airflow.
- Cut apples can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge. Treat the apple slices with lemon juice or use a fresh fruit produce protector found at the grocery store to help keep them from browning.
