The Best homemade brownie Recipe!

Brownies are definitely one of our go-to desserts when we have company over.

Yes, we know they are so simple to make using a box, but once you go homemade you’ll realize that they are ten times better than any box. And believe it or not – they’re still very simple.

This extra chocolatey homemade brownie recipe is thick, chewy and fudgy and perfect for sharing! Plus, our recipe makes a pan-full that feeds at least 12 (depending on how big you slice them). And whether you like the middle piece or an edge piece, these fudgy brownies are too good to deny.

Serve them on their own or with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream and for even extra goodness top it off with our Homemade Chocolate Syrup and Caramel Sauce.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

  • Packed with chocolate flavor. This recipe is rich, fudgy, and everything else you want in a brownie.
  • Better than boxed. Once you get a bite of these chewy brownies, you’ll never want to use a box mix again!
  • Always the right time. We love making brownies from scratch for all occasions! Birthdays, family get-togethers, school functions, or just an easy after-school snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted and cooled
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 4 eggs at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour see How to Measure Flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder – Be sure to use unsweetened baking cocoa powder. I used natural baking cocoa, but Dutch-processed cocoa powder will also work.
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup chocolate chips milk or semisweet, divided
  • optional toppings – sprinkles, toffee bits, crushed Oreos, crushed candies, chopped nuts, different flavors of chocolate chips, nuts, candy pieces, or mint chocolates

How to Make Homemade Brownies

  1. PREP. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9×11-inch baking dish, line it with parchment paper, and set aside. If using a metal baking pan, brownies will bake more quickly, so begin checking for doneness at around 20 minutes.
  2. BATTER. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup melted butter, 2 tablespoons oil, 1¼ cups sugar, 1 cup light brown sugar and whisk well.
    • Add 4 eggs and 1 tablespoon vanilla and mix for another 2 minutes.
    • In another bowl, sift 1 cup flour, 1 cup cocoa, ¾ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon baking powder.
    • Fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in ¾ cup chocolate chips.
  3. BAKE. Pour batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth out until even. Top with remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips and any other desired toppings and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the middle no longer jiggles.
    • Let sit in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then remove from the pan and let cool completely before cutting.

You’ll see why this homemade brownie recipe is truly the best!

Best Way to Cut Brownies

Let the brownies cool a bit, but not all the way and use a plastic knife. It will cut through the brownies like butter. Works like a charm!

These brownies came out perfect! Moist and DELICIOUS, however I did mine in a glass 9×13 dish and the took a total of 40 minutes to cook completely.

these brownies are so good! I made them exactly as the recipe directed, except for using only brown sugar since that was all I had on hand. I also marbled some peanut butter through the batter before putting it in the oven. It came out delicious! I have never made brownies from scratch before, so I’m really happy they turned out so good. They have a different consistency from store bought brownie mixes. They are less chewy and are more like a flourless chocolate cake to me, which I love. These aren’t Going to last long in my house and I will definitely make them again! Thank you for a great recipe!

Followed instructions to a T, did the jiggle test and toothpick test and they came out mostly raw and have more of a cake-like texture. Really sad cause it used up almost all my cocOa powder.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I am so sorry. It sounds like it needed more time baking. Thank you for trying it 🙂

  5. Jan says:

What other size pan could be used instead of a 9 x 11? Kind of an odd size. Thanks!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

      You could use a 9×13 🙂

Nothing better than a warm brownie coming out of the oven. Brownies are the best and usually are the gO to dessert in our home.

I tried homemade brownies a couple months ago and they came out grainy and didn’t have the nice crinkle top. These look like a way better recipe.
