The Best homemade brownie Recipe!
Brownies are definitely one of our go-to desserts when we have company over.
Yes, we know they are so simple to make using a box, but once you go homemade you’ll realize that they are ten times better than any box. And believe it or not – they’re still very simple.
This extra chocolatey homemade brownie recipe is thick, chewy and fudgy and perfect for sharing! Plus, our recipe makes a pan-full that feeds at least 12 (depending on how big you slice them). And whether you like the middle piece or an edge piece, these fudgy brownies are too good to deny.
Serve them on their own or with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream and for even extra goodness top it off with our Homemade Chocolate Syrup and Caramel Sauce.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
- Packed with chocolate flavor. This recipe is rich, fudgy, and everything else you want in a brownie.

Ingredients
PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 25 minutes
COOL TIME: 10 minutes
- 1 cup unsalted butter melted and cooled
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1¼ cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 4 eggs at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour – see How to Measure Flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder – Be sure to use unsweetened baking cocoa powder. I used natural baking cocoa, but Dutch-processed cocoa powder will also work.
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup chocolate chips milk or semisweet, divided
- optional toppings – sprinkles, toffee bits, crushed Oreos, crushed candies, chopped nuts, different flavors of chocolate chips, nuts, candy pieces, or mint chocolates
How to Make Homemade Brownies
- PREP. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9×11-inch baking dish, line it with parchment paper, and set aside. If using a metal baking pan, brownies will bake more quickly, so begin checking for doneness at around 20 minutes.
- BATTER. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup melted butter, 2 tablespoons oil, 1¼ cups sugar, 1 cup light brown sugar and whisk well.
- Add 4 eggs and 1 tablespoon vanilla and mix for another 2 minutes.
- In another bowl, sift 1 cup flour, 1 cup cocoa, ¾ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon baking powder.
- Fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in ¾ cup chocolate chips.
- BAKE. Pour batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth out until even. Top with remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips and any other desired toppings and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the middle no longer jiggles.
- Let sit in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then remove from the pan and let cool completely before cutting.
You’ll see why this homemade brownie recipe is truly the best!
Best Way to Cut Brownies
Let the brownies cool a bit, but not all the way and use a plastic knife. It will cut through the brownies like butter. Works like a charm!

This is my go-to brownie recipe. I get requests for this recipe every single time I take it to someone, an event, etc. My oven requires 35-37 minutes, though.
Oh I’m so happy to hear that!! Thanks for sharing. And yes, every oven is slightly different. I’m glad that you found the perfect baking time for yours.
These actually are the best brownies I’ve ever made or eaten. And I’ve made a LOT of brownie recipes. I’m so excited, these came out perfectly. I’ve had cake-y brownies, brownies that were grainy because the sugars didn’t dissolve, raw in the middle, burned on the edges brownies, and just generally unimpressive from-a-box brownies. (Though, IMO, those don’t even count as real brownies.) thank you! These are delicious and everything I’ve ever wanted in a brownie. I’m about to try the recipe again with GF flour and I’m sure they’ll come out just as wonderful!
Oh thank you so much for your kind words. We love this recipe too, but especially are excited to hear it’s a favorite after all the recipes you have tried! Thanks for sharing. 🙂 Hope the GF ones turn out too!
SO GOOD! Fudgy, chocolatey goodness! My entire family loves them and I get asked for the recipe from others every time I share them!
Oh that makes me so happy to hear! I’m glad you love the brownie recipe!
I have tried so many brownie recipes and this one is the best! It’s my go-to brownie recipe now.
I’m so happy you like it as much as we do! Thanks for trying it!
Great tasting brownie, however took an extra 20 minutes to cook. Total cooking time was 45 minutes.
Thanks for sharing the cooking time adjustment. I appreciate it!
Was looking for a really quick and easy dessert to throw together for a potluck. This is by far the best brownie recipe I’ve ever made. My boyfriend said he refuses to eat any other brownies. Thank you so much for the amazing recipe!
You are so welcome! It’s definitely been my go-to brownie recipe for quite a while now. I’m so glad your boyfriend likes them so much! 🙂
Thank you for this delicious recipe Kristyn!!!🌞 I love that the recipe calls for chocolate chips in addition to the cocoa. I followed the exact recipe, but added a cup of chopped walnuts, & used a
9 X 9 pan. I believe I had to bake them a little longer. I just kept an eye on them. They came out crispy on the top & very moist in the inside; yummy!!!
They also freeze well. I cut them in individual pieces, wrapped each individual piece in wax paper, & put as many pieces that would fit in each freezer bag. When I took each piece out of the freezer they tasted just as fresh & yummy
I’m looking forward to making them again!!!
Thank you again, & all the best to you & your family😇
Thank you so much for sharing your process in making these brownies. The addition of walnuts sounds delicious! I’m so glad they freezed well too! Thanks so much for sharing! You are so sweet! 🙂
