COOK TIME: 25 minutes
COOL TIME: 10 minutes
- 1 cup unsalted butter melted and cooled
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1¼ cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 4 eggs at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour – see How to Measure Flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder – Be sure to use unsweetened baking cocoa powder. I used natural baking cocoa, but Dutch-processed cocoa powder will also work.
- ¾ teaspoon salt

- 1 cup chocolate chips milk or semisweet, divided
- optional toppings – sprinkles, toffee bits, crushed Oreos, crushed candies, chopped nuts, different flavors of chocolate chips, nuts, candy pieces, or mint chocolates
How to Make Homemade Brownies
- PREP. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9×11-inch baking dish, line it with parchment paper, and set aside. If using a metal baking pan, brownies will bake more quickly, so begin checking for doneness at around 20 minutes.
- BATTER. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup melted butter, 2 tablespoons oil, 1¼ cups sugar, 1 cup light brown sugar and whisk well.
- Add 4 eggs and 1 tablespoon vanilla and mix for another 2 minutes.
- In another bowl, sift 1 cup flour, 1 cup cocoa, ¾ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon baking powder.
- Fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in ¾ cup chocolate chips.
- BAKE. Pour batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth out until even. Top with remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips and any other desired toppings and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the middle no longer jiggles.
- Let sit in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then remove from the pan and let cool completely before cutting.
You’ll see why this homemade brownie recipe is truly the best!
Best Way to Cut Brownies
Let the brownies cool a bit, but not all the way and use a plastic knife. It will cut through the brownies like butter. Works like a charm!

Made these yesterday they came out amazing! Will definitely be keeping this recipe for future use. So moist and yummy! I used semi sweet chocolate chunks instead of chips bc it’s what I had at home, I’ll continue to use them I prefer over the chocolate chips.
I bet the chocolate chunks were delicious in the brownies! Thanks for giving the recipe a try!
These are the best brownies bar none. My homemade brownies always left something to be desired. They were always too something. Too dry, too moist, too heavy, too lite or they fell apart. These are perfect. I had about a third of a bag of mini marshmallows and put those on top of one ( I made two). Yummy!
Ooh the marshmallows on top sound delicious! I’m so glad you love the brownie recipe!
Superb.
Yay!! Glad you think that!! Thank you so much!
I love the ooey gooey chocolate of these brownies.
best brownies ever! made 2 batches, one for the house and one for a bake sale. My family loved them and they all sold at the sale! 10/10 recommend!
Amazing brownies – melt in your mouth delicious!
These taste delicious! So I only had a 1/4c sugar so didn’t put nearly the amount of sugar in as the recipe called for but they tasted as sweet as regular brownies. I wonder if I added too much flour or shouldn’t have sifted it? They are very cake like and not fudgy. We’re still enjoying them, though! We added walnuts to half for the adults.
These homemade brownies are the best!
Thank you!! So glad you love them!
One of my kid’s favorites! They love the chocolate chips added in. I never tried adding the chocolate chips in brownies till I tried this recipe and now it’s my go to recipe!
Yummy!
