Easy Slow Cooker Rice Pudding is rich and creamy. It is flavored with cinnamon for a comforting family favorite!

Slow cooker rice pudding is a cinch to make, especially since it’s all done in the crock pot! My family finished off this rice and milk treat so fast that next time I’ll be making a double batch. Be sure to also try Bread Pudding, Easy Rice Pudding, and Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Slow cooker for the win!

Cooler temperatures are upon us, and at my house that means it’s time for comfort food! Rice pudding has always been a favorite of all of my kiddos. They love it for breakfast, snacks, and dessert (we even have a Mexican Rice Pudding recipe too!)

In the past, I have always used the traditional method of making rice pudding, which requires cooking and stirring in a pan on the stovetop. I decided to try a slow cooker rice pudding recipe. To tell the truth, I was pretty skeptical. I wasn’t sure it would turn out as nice and creamy as my regular recipe.

Fortunately, it turned out great and was beyond simple!!

Easy rice pudding recipe on spoon

crockpot Rice Pudding

To make slow cooker rice pudding, you just add all the ingredients (rice, evaporated milk, milk, sugar, butter, vanilla, cinnamon and salt).

COMBINE & COOK. Whisk this together in the slow cooker and cook for the following:

  • HIGH for 2-3 hours
  • LOW for 4-5.

Tips, Variations + SToring Info

I cooked mine on HIGH for 2 hours and 45 minutes, and it was perfect. Just a few tips:

  • You shouldn’t have to stir the mixture, but we did (just to be safe) half way through cooking
  • Grease your crockpot with butter, spray with cooking spray, or use a slow cooker liner to prevent the pudding from sticking to the sides. Cleaning up will be a breeze!
  • Rinse your rice in some cold water before adding it to the crockpot. This extra step can help the consistency of your pudding to come out a little smoother.
  • If you would like your pudding to turn out lighter in color, wait to add the cinnamon until right before you are ready to serve it.

Variations:

  • Add more cinnamon on top when serving if you like the cinnamon taste
  • Add raisins or nuts to the mixture if you like those too

STORE rice pudding in a plastic container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove.

To FREEZE, leftover rice pudding store it in a Ziploc freezer bag and when you are ready to use it, defrost it in the fridge overnight. It will keep well for about 3 months.

The taste of the rice pudding is great, but the Rice is still kinda crunchy. Is it supposed to be that way?

  2. Carol says:

What size slow cooker is used for this recipe?

  3. Gloria Castillo says:

Greetings, I love your recipes, but I tried the slow cooker Arroz con Leche using the 3/4 cup and followed your instructions to the “T” and something happened. The Arroz con Leche was watery, it appeared that the rice was not cooked, etc. I used the long hours on my slow cooker, and still nothing worked. I am going to try the one with more cups of rice, and perhaps try another brand of rice. Any suggestions? Gloria Castillo [email protected] Thank you.

After trying someone’s grandmothers old creamy rice pudding recipe and being very disappointed, I went to my friend Google and selected yours from the variety slow cooker rice pudding recipes. It was the ingredient list and the fact that you rinse your rice that made me try it. I made it for my wife who was in need of some comfort food! A double batch with lots of raisins took about 3 1/2 hours on high with a liner. Stirring about every 1/2 hour to check for doneness. The only thing I will tweak next time will be fresh grated nutmeg on top when it’s served. She said this reminded her of what she had when she was a kid. Success!

Can you use half and half milk and honey instead of sugar

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I haven’t tried before, but you could give it a try. You’ll have to let us know how it turns out if you do.

I have an ancient, avocado green round crockpot from the late 60’s. I was so skeptical to try but am over the moon with the results. Rice pudding is a go to comfort dessert in our realm so I am so happy not to be standing and stirring at the stove. This was quick and easy to put together and made the house smell delightful as it came together. Rice (Uncle Bens long grain, rinsed) cooked well and liquid all absorbed into creamy richness. It did take 3 hours on high, I stirred twice during the cooking and added raisins the last 15 mins. I made no other adjustments to the recipe and used PAM spray inside the crock pot. Thank you for this recipe. It will be made many more times. Hint about freezing in small portions made my husband happy as well.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Oh this makes me so happy to hear!! I’m so glad that you found the recipe and gave it a try. And that it was a winner! Thanks for sharing.

  7. Brakel says:

NO. Flavor not bad, texture is grotesque. Super thick, gummy, pasty, not at all creamy. Did 4 hrs on low.

  8. Lynn says:

Can this recipe be doubled successfully?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, you should be able to double it just fine!

  9. Susan M. says:

This is not really rice pudding. It’s more of a very sweet risotto.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

      Thanks for the feedback!

    2. Brakel says:

Agree, not a rice pudding. So disappointing. Thick, gooey, not at all creamy.

  10. Sharon Borgesano says:

I tripled the recipe and I am going to wing on the time I have to cook it unless someone knows the answer!!??

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Curious to hear how it turned out tripled. Hopefully it was a success! 🙂

It looks delicious. Is there 1 kind of rice that works better for this? And do you rinse the rice? Thanks in advance

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I typically use long grain rice and I don’t rise mine before. Hope the recipe turns out well for you!

So easy and so delicious . I have been making it forever . I always double this recipe . It reminds me of the delicious recipe my grandmother use to make . I’m a working mom . I have multiple crock pots . I fix dinner in the a.m. before work . One for the main course and one for dessert . Dinner is ready when we get home . Everything stays warm so if some kids get home late from sports they have a home cooked meal ready for them .

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

Thanks so much for sharing what you do for your dinners. It’s so helpful for us busy moms to get tips from each other! I’m glad you enjoyed this recipe. Thanks so much for trying it!

I have made this recipe twice now and love it. Mine is ready at the 1.5hr mark using a crock pot on slow cook high. I use 3 cups of full cream milk and do not use the evaporated milk. Absolutely delicious 😌

Oh I’m so glad to hear you love this recipe! Thanks for sharing!!

The rice never cooked it was still hard even 8hrs after. Finally after 12 hrs in the crock pot I called it quits. Waist of ingredients and time and a huge disappointment!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I’m sorry that happened. Not sure what went wrong. Thanks for trying it!

    2. Jill says:

Me Too! I am in the process of trying today and it’s been almost 6 hours. Rice is not cooked! I wish I would have seen your comment before trying to make it. Such a bummer. I should just shut my crock pot off now and toss in the trash. 🙁

Made this recipe at least 6 or 7 times since finding and saving it last summer during our summer months spent at home because of the Pandemic.

I prepare mine exactly as you do yours stirring half way through on high 2 hours and 45 minutes and it’s always came out lovely. I do add 1 cup raisins and extra cinnamon as I stir at the end just before serving.

Tonight I made it only using 1/2 cup sugar instead of the 3/4 cup in the past as your recipe calls for because I find it a bit sweet and the 1/2 cup was perfect.

    Love and recommend this recipe.

A favorite of ours. My daughter loves it.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Thank you so much for saying that!! So happy it’s a favorite of yours!

    Hi!
Mine came out horrible LOL! But it was the first time I used my new slow cooker so I’ll try this recipe again this weekend.
The worst was that it was medium brown in colour from the cinnamon and the texture was like a huge lump of paste. So the next time I’m going to use a tiny bit of cinnamon in the recipe and then sprinkle more on after it’s done.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I hope it turns out the second time 😉 Thanks for trying it!

  23. Diane Quaas says:

I cooked mine on HIGH for 5 hours because after 3 hours the rice was still crunchy. Even after 5 hours the rice is still slightly crunchy. I followed your recipe to the letter and I’m not happy wroth the results.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Hmmm?? Mine was just under 3 hours, which seemed to be perfect. I’m sorry, I wish I knew what happened.

This delicious rice pudding made me cry as it brought me back to my childhood and thoughts of my grandmother. In my family arroz con dulce is a Christmas must as far as deserts go. I have tried numerous recipes and none I tell you none have tasted this fully cooked creamy and delicious. My husband loved it so much as well. Thank you. You made my Thanksgiving.

  25. Vicki Parker says:

Very delicious but sticky. Maybe leave the cinnamon out and just to sprinkle before serving.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

You can totally add it on top 🙂 Thank you for letting me know!

  26. Gail says:

    3 stars
It had really good flavor but was not creamy at all, the color was tan/light brown I guess BECAUSE of the CINNAMON, I took about 21/2 hours on high I am not sure if I will make it again or just add cooked minute rice to hot vanilla pudding ,

  27. Africa says:

Could sweetened condensed milk work in this RECEIPe too?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

      I haven’t tried, but possibly 🙂

  28. Janis says:

Is there a reason you specify plastic storage containers in your recipes? There’s no reason glass or ceramic wouldn’t work just as well, and be more healthy.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

That is just what I used, but you could use whatever you like 🙂

Can I make this recipe in individual ramekins in the crockpot for less time or make the recipe and then put into ramekins in the refrig.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I haven’t made them in the individual ramekins, but I would personally make it, then serve them in those

  34. Nikki says:

At what point should I add raisins?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I would add them right at the end, before serving, but you can add them sooner, if you want them softer.

I was so excited to try this recipe, minimal ingredients, cooked in a slow cooker, what could go wrong?

A lot. I decided to cook it on low for 4.5 hrs. I had fallen asleep, so my pot kept it warm for another 2 hours. That makes it 6.5 hrs. I opened my pot to soup, with uncooked rice. I decided, let me up it to high and cook it for 2.5 hours.

Well, it had definitely thickened up, almost to dulce de leche color and consistency. The rice, while no longer raw was still on the crunchy center side so, after 9 hours on heat, the rice still hadn’t cooked. Tomorrow I’m going to try to rescue it by adding more milk to thin it out, and simmer it on the stovetop.

    I’m so disappointed

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Hmm..I am so sorry! I haven’t had issues with cooking mine on high for about 2 hrs 45 min. I wish I knew what happened. Thank you for trying it!

I was very happy to find such an easy recipe. I made the rice pudding and I think the crock pot i used always gets hotter than my other crocks so i feel that it was over cooked. it was very good when we ate some warm but after putting it in the frige it dried up. so i just warmed it a little and added more milk like you said . rice pudding was there and then it was all gone.
i will make again, with less cooking time.
i suggest everyone to try the recipe so easy and a great tasting rice pudding
    i give it 10 star

Yay!! I love hearing that!! Love when I have everything to make a recipe! Thank you!

  38. Joyce says:

Followed exactly. 3 hrs. later it is like water. Wonder if amount of rice should have been 1 3/4 instead of 3/4.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Did it turn out ok? I hope so! I haven’t had that issue, so not sure what happened.

What can I substitute for evaporated milk? … If you don’t have any, make your own: To produce 1 cup of evaporated milk, simmer 2 1/4 cups of regular milk down until it becomes 1 cup. In many recipes, evaporated milk may also be replaced with a combination of whole milk and half-and-half.May 16, 2017

hi kara! i love rice pudding but not fond of making it the traditional way. i can see this will be yummy and i will be making it via my favorite thing, the crock pot. thank you for sharing! i like rice pudding with nutmeg as well as cinnamon. Raisins are a must for me and i prefer it cold. never thought of it for breakfast, though, and that will be good! marie

It tastes good, but how to you get it to stay in pudding form? the day after making it I pulled it out of the fridge and it was like sticky rice, not pudding. This is the second rice pudding RECIPE I have tried and they both did the same thing. I starting to give up on rice pudding. I followed the recipe completely. Any help would be great.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Did you try re-heating it? You could add 2-3 tablespoons of milk & re-heat over the stove, stirring. It should get creamy after doing that.

I’m addicted to rice pudding and this looks fabulous! What size slow cooker did you use to make this? I have a 6 quart slow cooker and I’m wondering if it would be too big for this recipe would work. Doubling or tripling the recipe would make too much pudding for me.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Yes, it would work 🙂 Sometimes when that’s all you have, you work with it. You’ll love it!

    2. Adriana says:

      HI,

LOOKING FORWARD TO MAKING THIS RICE PUDDING, SUPER SIMPLE TO MAKE. MY QUESTION IS ARE THERE CERTAIN TYPES OF RICE YOU DON’T RECOMMEND USING…I ONLY HAVE CALROSE ON HAND AND IT TENDS TO BE RATHER STICKY ONCE COOKED.

      1. Kristyn Merkley says:

You know, I have only tried the long grain & don’t make this too often, too know which ones are best or which ones to avoid. I think that would be just fine 😉

  53. Diane S says:

What is the serving size/number of servings for the Slow Cooker Rice Pudding?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

It just depends on how big your servings are. It doesn’t make a whole lot, so I would double it for more than 4. Hope that helps!

  54. Kristyn Merkley says:

Thank you so much for giving it a try 🙂 Glad you liked the flavor!
