So Refreshing!

I LOVE watermelon season, don’t you?! It’s one of the tastes of summer. There is nothing more refreshing and juicier than a slice of this amazing fruit – wouldn’t you agree?

Well, my dad is known for his “concoctions in the kitchen”, and one he is best known for is his watermelon juice. It’s a family favorite drink, and I will be sharing it with you today.

I promise you won’t be disappointed if you try it! It does include some strawberries, but for a variety of flavors, you can always substitute for another berry or even omit all berries and up the watermelon or add your favorite fresh fruit juice. This is a perfect summer drink!

How to Make Watermelon Juice

This watermelon juice recipe is a favorite summertime staple, a must for hot summer days. It’s refreshing and SO easy to make!

WATERMELON. To start off, cut your watermelon into quarters. Spoon a quarter of the watermelon chunks into your blender.

STRAWBERRIES. Cut the tops off of 4 strawberries and add to your blender. Mix.

ICE. Add remaining ingredients to blender (⅛ cup sugar, ⅛ cup water, and 1 cup ice cubes). Blend well.

ENJOY! This makes two very large glasses of refreshing drink. A whole watermelon will make about 8-12 servings, but you will have to add and mix these ingredients each time so they can all fit in your blender.

Health Benefits

Watermelon is a favorite summer fruit, here are some watermelon juice benefits!

Weight loss. Watermelon helps with weight loss because it is made of mainly water, so while it may be filling it doesn’t have as many calories as other juices.

The high water content hydrates the skin and the vitamins found in the melon strengthen your hair follicles and reduce the appearance of aging.

Health benefits. Watermelons are high in Vitamin A and C as well as potassium and B6 vitamins. It also contains citrulline which is an amino acid that relaxes muscles and can combat stress and high blood pressure.

If you’re looking to make this juice even healthier, you can also substitute it for SPLENDA Naturals which is a stevia-based sweetener.

Recipe Tips + Variations

Watermelon drink starts with a ripe, juicy watermelon! We have lots of tips.

Choose a good watermelon. Watermelons should have a field spot on one side of them where it was resting on the ground. It will be yellowy looking. The melon should also sound hollow when you tap it with your knuckles. Another way to check is if it has dull-looking skin. The shiny-looking ones will typically be unripe. Or check our post here.

Frozen strawberries. Frozen strawberries may be used. This will give it more of a slushy texture instead of a juice-like one.

Seedless watermelon. The best watermelon to use for this recipe is a seedless one. The white seeds are fine, do not consume the black seeds.

Freezing Tips + Variations

You should freeze fresh watermelon juice in a container with a lid while leaving some space in it so it can expand. It will be fine in the freezer for 30-60 days.

If you don’t end up freezing it will last in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Fun variations.

  • Add a piece of fruit to the rim of the glass like a wedge from lemons or limes or slice up some strawberries.
  • Add a splash of lemon juice or lime juice.
  • Garnish with fresh mint leaves.
  • Use coconut water.
  • Serve with a festive straw or drink umbrella.
  • Use carbonated water for a bubbly juice.
  • Sugar the rim of the glass: Dip the rim in lemon juice and then into some sugar. Let dry.

Recipe FAQ

Why is watermelon juice grainy?

The texture of watermelon is grainy in nature. If you wish for the juice to be more smooth, you can strain the blended drink through a nut milk bag or pour it through a fine mesh strainer.

Can I use the rind in watermelon juice?

The rind is full of vitamins and minerals and is edible, but I don’t recommend using it as it is fairly bitter and doesn’t always produce a good texture. If you or a friend has chickens, they love frozen rinds as a special treat.

Do I need a fruit juicer to make watermelon juice?

You do not need a juicer to make watermelon juice, just a blender.
