A Gooey Spooky Treat!

We love Halloween at our house! We especially love to create spooky or fun ways to dress up our food around this holiday. It’s fun for parties, but really it just makes any day of the month fun.

Create a slime monster with this Halloween treat that is just as tasty as our Marshmallow Caramel Popcorn. That intense green color and little candy eyeballs make it a fun snack for parties. Kids and adults alike are sure to love it!

This monster popcorn would even be fun to serve at a birthday party or other themed event. No need to wait for All Hallow’s Eve! The green food coloring could easily be changed and the addition of a different variety of sprinkles would make it suitable for any event. And trust me, it won’t last long!

How to Make Slime Popcorn

Slime popcorn is sweet with just a little bit of an “ew” factor. It’s so easy to make, and fun to eat!

POPCORN. Pour popcorn into a large bowl.

SAUCE. Melt butter and brown sugar together in a large saucepan over medium heat, stirring often. Stir in marshmallows until melted and smooth. Stir in green food coloring until the green is evenly distributed.

COMBINE. Pour the green marshmallow mixture over the popcorn and stir until evenly coated. Spread the popcorn mixture out on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet to set up (you can spray your hands with cooking spray or get them wet to help spread it out).

DECORATE. Sprinkle in candy eyeballs and allow to cool and set up.

VARIATIONS

This fun slime popcorn recipe gets its intense green color with neon green food gel. Make it your own with any of these variations!

  • Lollipops. Shape popcorn into balls and attach them to a lollipop stick.
  • Red hots. Add a few red hot candies or Halloween sprinkles to the mixture, but be sure you don’t add too many mix-ins that there isn’t enough marshmallow goo to cover everything.
  • Unicorn popcorn. Change up the color (try pink!) and add rainbow sprinkles. Or try a variation of your own!

TIPS + Storing

To prevent sticking. The gooey marshmallow popcorn will be sticky. Wet hands help keep the gooey mixture from sticking to them. You can also spray them with cooking spray and utilize a silicone spatula.

Popcorn. Be sure to use plain popcorn, not buttered or kettle corn-flavored popcorn. If you wish to air pop your own kernels, you will need ⅓ cup of unpopped kernels to yield about 10 cups of popped corn.

Marshmallows. You will need 16 oz of marshmallows. They can be mini marshmallows or jumbo sized. Marshmallows must be fresh otherwise the popcorn mixture can set too hard. So save that bag in the back of the pantry to put in some Halloween Hot Chocolate.

STORE. The slime popcorn can be stored in an airtight container or wrap individual balls tightly with plastic wrap. It is best when consumed within 2 days, but can last for 5 days.

Recipe FAQ

Can I use an air popper to make popcorn slime?

For ease I used microwave bags of plain popcorn, however, you can easily use an air popper. You will need ⅓ cup of unpopped kernels to yield about 10 cups of popped corn.

Why is my popcorn slime too hard to eat?

Using old marshmallows or overcooking the marshmallows can cause the mixture to harden into a treat that is just too hard to eat.

What kind of food coloring do I use to make slime popcorn?

The intense green coloring in my slime popcorn came from using neon green food gel. If you use regular green food dye the coloring will be more of a light green.

    One more question
Could I coat the bowl with ????? so it doesn’t stick to the walls of the bowl. It would be wonderful if you had videos of your recipes. Then we wouldn’t have to spend the time to write and waste your time for creating. Happy thanksgiving Carolyn

when I make balls what do you cover them with. I would like to make them for a bake sale. Will regular plastic wrap work or do I have to use something different. do you think sparkles will show if I put some in the marshmallows.
