We LOVE a nice, warm, dinner roll and there’s few better than today’s copycat version of Texas Roadhouse Rolls!

If you’ve been there before, you know just how amazing their rolls are. Soft, warm and served with cinnamon butter (don’t worry – we have a recipe for that one too!)

We definitely needed these at home, and were so happy when grandma ended up testing several versions years ago. We ended with today’s recipe, and it tastes just like the real deal. They’re thick and soft – basically roll perfection!

If you are experienced with yeast, these copycat Texas Roadhouse Rolls are easy peasy. If this is your first time working with yeast, this is a great recipe to start with. There’s not much hands on work and the steps are super simple.

Why we think you’ll love it:

  • Just like the original. These copycats are as delicious as the real deal! No need to wait for date night, make them right at home whenever you’d like.
  • Quick prep. It really only takes about 20 minutes of work, most of your time is spent waiting for the dough to rise and bake.
  • The cinnamon butter. You do not want to forget this signature pairing. Although delicious without it, you have to at least give it a try – trust us!

Texas Roadhouse Rolls Ingredients and Substitutions

  • 1¼ cups whole milk or 2% milk
  • ¼ cup honey or try thick maple syrup
  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast or use instant yeast
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided or salted butter
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour  or bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt reduce if using salted butter

How to Make Texas Roadhouse Rolls

  1. DOUGH. Heat 1¼ cups whole milk in a small saucepan and bring it to a near boil. The milk will begin to steam and small bubbles will form. At this point remove the pot from the heat and let it cool to lukewarm.
    • Pour the milk into a small bowl and add 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast and ¼ cup honey. Mix until well combined and let it stand for 5 minutes.
    • In a separate larger bowl add 3 tablespoons of melted butter, the yeast mixture, 1 egg, and 2 cups of flour.
  2. KNEAD. Use a stand mixer with a dough hook, or knead by hand. Gradually add the remaining 2 cups of flour until the mixture is combined and soft dough forms. Add 1 teaspoon salt and knead for 8 minutes.
  3. SHAPE. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a 12×18-inch rectangle that is ⅜-inch thick.
    • Fold it in half so it measures 12×9 inches. Cut 12 rolls. Each roll will measure 3×3 inches.
  4. RISE. Lightly grease a cookie sheet and place the rolls 1-2 inches apart. Cover and allow the dough to rise for another hour or until doubled in size.
  5. BAKE. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes. The tops will be a light golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush the tops with the remaining 1 tablespoon butter.

DOUGH TIPS:

  • The dough should feel soft and pliable, but not sticky. Take a small piece of dough and stretch it thin. If it forms a thin, translucent film without tearing, it’s kneaded enough.
  • Creating a warmer environment will help the dough proof faster. Place the dough near a warm sunny window, a warm crock pot, on top of a warm oven, or above a bowl of hot steaming water.

Copycat Texas Roadhouse Rolls

By: Lil’ Luna
Copycat Texas Roadhouse rolls are so soft they melt in your mouth!! They are huge, buttery, and just like the real deal!
Servings: 12
Prep: 20 minutes
Cook: 15 minutes
Rise: 2 hours
Total: 2 hours 35 minutes

Equipment

Ingredients

Dough

  • cups whole milk
  • ¼ cup honey
  • teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all purpose flour, or bread flour

Instructions

  • Add the milk to a small bowl and microwave for 1 – 2 minutes. Pour into your mixing bowl and add yeast and honey and stir to combine. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  • Add 3 tablespoons of melted butter, egg, salt and 2 cups of flour. Mix and then knead the dough for a few minutes using your mixer and a dough hook.
  • Gradually add the remaining 2 cups of flour until the mixture is combined and bread dough forms. Knead for 6-8 minutes, or until elastic.
  • Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a 12×18 inch rectangle that is ⅜ inch thick.
  • Fold it in half so it measures 12×9 inches. Cut 12 rolls. Each roll will measure 3 x 3 inches.
  • (*Note for smaller rolls, roll the rectangle to 12 x20 inches. Fold in half and then cut 20 smaller rolls. These smaller rolls will measure 2- 2 1/2 inches square.)
  • Lightly grease a cookie sheet and place the rolls 1 – 2 inches apart. Cover and allow the dough to rise for another hour or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the rolls for 12 – 15 minutes. The tops will be a light golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush the tops with the remaining butter.
  • It is vital that the butter is very soft. Do not soften it in the microwave, instead allow it to sit out on the counter for about an hour.
  • Using an electric mixer, beat all the cinnamon butter ingredients together until creamy and smooth.
  • Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

My husband and I love! Texas Roadhouse rolls so I’m super excited to try this. Just a note: I think there is supposed to be time to rise between steps 4 and 5 but it’s not written in the recipe instructions.

    1. Rene says:

I would like to know about the rise between steps 4 and 5 too. Normally bread dough has 2 rises.

The way you have us roll the dough made it super each to open them in half for a nice spread of your cinnamon butter recipe.
