S’mores Puppy Chow

S’mores Puppy Chow is deliciously portable and made in minutes. It’s easily one of the best grab-and-go treats!

The best part of S’mores Puppy Chow is you don’t have to turn on your oven to make it! It’s a particularly great snack mix for summer!! If you need “S’more” treats like this one, try S’mores Brownies and S’mores Pie!

Chocolate Snack

I’ve been on the hunt for some easy no-bake treats for the kiddos and S’mores Muddy Buddies is a perfect sweet snack! It only requires a few ingredients and can be whipped up in a matter of minutes.

For this particular batch of S’mores Puppy Chow, I used Nutella, but you could use another chocolate spread if you happen to have one on hand.

Toss everything together in a BIG bowl and serve it up poolside or on your next camping trip! This is such a fun, tasty treat that kids and adults will love!

This treat is perfect to create a S’mores dessert if you don’t have a campfire to make traditional s’mores.

Making Puppy Chow

CHOCOLATE. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate spread (or peanut butter) and the chocolate chips.

Place in the microwave and melt for 30 seconds on high, three times, stirring in between. Once the chocolate is nice and smooth, stir in the mini marshmallows, then fold in the cereal.

COAT. Transfer the cereal to a large Ziploc bag, add the powdered sugar, seal and shake to coat.

COMBINE. Toss in a large clean bowl along with the Golden Graham cereal, graham cracker chunks, chocolate chips (or Hershey’s Drops), and mini marshmallows.

Recipe Tips

Chex Cereal. Use either plain Rice Chex cereal or Corn Chex cereal. Try other types like Chocolate Chex or Peanut Butter Chex.

Gluten-free. Puppy Chow is typically a gluten-free dessert as Chex cereals are all gluten-free. To keep it gluten-free, make a few adjustments to replace the golden graham cereal and graham cracker chunks with a similar gluten-free alternative.

Peanut butter. We recommend using traditional peanut butter instead of natural because the texture is essential to help it stick to the cereal.

Chocolate. We prefer using Ghirardelli chocolate because it has the best flavor. Use your personal favorite or whatever you have on hand.

Variations:

  • Use chopped Hershey bars instead of mini chocolate chips.
  • Add a salty snack to the mix like mini pretzels.
  • Add mini peanut butter cups, M&M’s, or chocolate/yogurt-covered raisins.
  • Use mini freeze-dried marshmallows instead of traditional mini marshmallows.

Storing Info

Make ahead of time. Since this lasts a while, make it a day or two ahead of time and keep it stored in an airtight container until the party.

STORE. I like to keep my S mores Puppy Chow in an airtight container in the fridge. It can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for about a week.

FREEZE. I have never frozen muddy buddies, but if you put them in an airtight container they should last for about 3 months before being thawed.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup chocolate spread or peanut butter (like Nutella)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 4 cup Golden Graham cereal
  • 3 cups Chex cereal
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Mix-Ins

  • 1 cup Golden Graham cereal
  • 1/3 cup graham cracker chunks (from about 2 sheets of graham crackers)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or Hershey’s Drops
  • 1/2 cup mini marshmallows

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl combine the chocolate spread (or peanut butter) and the chocolate chips.
  • Place in the microwave and melt for 30 seconds on high, three times, stirring in between. Once the chocolate is nice and smooth, stir in the mini marshmallows, then fold in the cereal.
  • Transfer the cereal to a large ziploc bag, add the powdered sugar, seal and shake to coat.
  • Toss in a large clean bowl along with the Golden Graham cereal, graham cracker chunks, chocolate chips (or Hershey's Drops), and mini marshmallows.

Notes

If you’re using a chocolate spread, I like to add ⅛ tsp. kosher sea salt to the chocolate mixture after it’s melted- it’s completely optional. If you’re using peanut butter, it already has enough salt in it to give this mix more of a salty/sweet taste.

This recipe looks fantastic! I know all my kids will love it!! Thank you, Natalie. For more great recipes from her, be sure to head on over to Life Made Simple. 😉

  1. wish I could make these, but live in Danmark so i can not get these cereals here. can you suggest anyother type of cereal that would work? Thanks

    1. I’m not sure what cereals you have there, but you could use any that are hollow in the inside, with little holes, that the melted ingredients can seep through & fill in. Also, use one that maybe doesn’t have added flavors. I hope that helps you & hope you find one that works!

  2. 5 stars
This looks so good! I love how easy it is to prepare and how great it is to entertain a crowd. Thank you for the recipe, I’ll definitely prepare it this weekend 😀

  3. When you say fold in cereal (into the chocolate mixture), are you talking about both the 3 c. Of corn Chex and 4 c. Of the golden graham? I know this seems simple and I’ve made something like Thor before but I want to be sure 🙂 thanks!!

    1. They might become a little more stale. I haven’t made them that far in advance, just maybe the night before or morning of. I hope that helps you! I hope you like this recipe!
