A Cookies and Cream Twist!

Hey guys, this is Lauren visiting again from TastesBetterFromScratch. I’m excited to share one of our family’s favorite treats with you–Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies!

Do you call it muddy buddies, or puppy chow? What ever you call it, it could be the greatest treat ever invented. They take minutes to make, they only consist of a few ingredients and they’re completely addicting! The traditional version with peanut butter is delish, but my husband got me completely hooked on these Cookies and Cream Muddy Buddies.

Let’s be honest, Oreos incorporated into any treat (like my delish Oreo Fluff Dessert) takes it to a whole new level! I’m warning you now, these muddy muddies will be your new favorite movie night treat. “See-Ya Popcorn!”, “Welcome muddy buddies!”–if ya know what I mean.

How to make It

CHEX. Divide Chex cereal into two large bowls (3 cups in each bowl).

OREO. Crush Oreos into fine crumbs using a food processor or by putting them in a Ziploc bag and crushing them with a rolling pin. Divide the Oreo crumbs evenly into two separate Ziploc bags (about ½ cup in each bag). Add ½ cup of powdered sugar to each bag. Set aside.

MILK CHOCOLATE CHIPS. Melt the milk chocolate chips– I like to use a double boiler, but you can also melt them in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until melted. Pour the melted chocolate into one of the bowls of Chex cereal and stir gently until the cereal is evenly coated in chocolate.

WHITE CHOCOLATE CHIPS. Melt the white chocolate chips. Pour the melted white chocolate into the other bowl with Chex cereal and stir gently until the cereal is evenly coated in white chocolate.

MIX. Add the milk chocolate Chex to one of the gallon Ziploc bags, and the add the white chocolate Chex to the other gallon Ziploc bag and shake the bags well to evenly coat the cereal with powdered sugar. Pour both bags together into one large bowl. And if you’ve got any extra Oreos in your package, chop some up and add them to the mix!

Variations + Storing Tips

What kind of Chex? The most commonly used Chex cereal for muddy buddies is either Corn or Rice Chex. Either of them will work great for this recipe, but you can use whatever kind of Chex you want.

Thorough Coating: To coat muddy buddies more thoroughly, shake the bag/Tupperware more aggressively. Add more powdered sugar and continue shaking, more sugar couldn’t hurt!

Serve in a large bowl or in individual serving cups available for guests to use to scoop themselves some muddy buddies!

Variations/Additions

  • Use golden Oreos for the “cookies” muddy buddies
  • Use Hershey’s Cookies and Cream Bars instead of white chocolate for the “cream” muddy buddies

STORE the muddy buddies in airtight container at room temperature for about 1 week. Or, in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

  1. WOW. I can practically taste this through my computer! What a fun (and yummy) looking treat!

  2. I love OREOs too, Lauren! What a great idea to add them to puppy chow/muddy buddies to add some extra chocolatey sweetness.
