How to make 4th of July Cookies

WET INGREDIENTS. Cream together sugars, butter and oil. Add eggs and beat until fluffy.

DRY INGREDIENTS. Add dry ingredients as well as vanilla. Mix in chopped M&Ms {however many you want}.

BAKE. Place in balls on greased pan, insert a few M&Ms on top. Bake at 350 for 7-8 minutes.

  • The easiest way to chop the M&Ms is to use a nut chopper, but a food processor or carefully cut with a kitchen knife also works.
  • Sprinkle or roll the dough into 4th of July colored Jimmies will also make them cute and festive.
  • If you really like chewy cookies substitute the white sugar with an equal amount of brown sugar so that you are using all brown sugar.
  • For a subtle flavor twist use ½ tsp almond extract instead of 1 tsp of vanilla
  • Using room temperature eggs will help them incorporate them more smoothly into the dough.

Recipe FAQ + Tips

How to store and freeze? COVER and STORE dough in the fridge for 1-2 days before baking.

Form the dough into a log shape, wrap with plastic wrap and again with foil and FREEZE for up to 3 months. Thaw before shaping and baking.

Form the dough balls, place them on a baking sheet and FREEZE. Freeze for a couple hours or until the dough is solid then transfer them to a freezer safe Ziploc.

Once the cookies have cooled STORE baked cookies in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Tossing a  piece of white bread into the container will help them stay soft and chewy. STORE them in the freezer for up to 5 months.

Can you add other mix-ins? Of course! Favorite chips (white chocolate chips would be perfect) as well as other chopped candies go well too.

      Hi Kristyn!

I used your recipe to make these cookies for Easter and everyone loved them! Now I want to try them for Fourth of July but was wondering if I could use all butter instead of part butter/part oil. And if you think it’s best to use oil, what kind do you use?
