Did you know you can make pizza seasoning at home?
It’s so handy to have whenever you’re in the mood to have a pizza night – one of our favorite dinners! Fortunately, you just need a few ingredients, and most are probably sitting in your pantry or cabinets now.
Italian seasoning is usually a mix of dried oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary. A pizza seasoning blend usually has the extra ingredients that everyone loves with their pizza, like onions, garlic, and fennel seed.
This seasoning is easy to make at home with some of the standard spices in your pantry – we always make sure to have some on hand! It’s perfect for our classic Pepperoni Pizza and Pizza Casserole and beyond.
Why we think you’ll love it:
- Pantry staples. You most likely have the needed ingredients already on hand!
- The flavors. We’ve included all of the flavors you love with your pizza, like onions, garlic, and oregano – it’s perfection.
- Just mix! It’s made in minutes and can be labeled and stored in the pantry to have on hand for your next pizza night.

Pizza Seasoning Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons dried oregano
- 2 tablespoons dried basil
- 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes, (or onion powder)
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder – or garlic salt with parsley flakes
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried fennel
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon black pepper, coarsely ground
- optional ingredient – add a kick of heat with red pepper flakes

How to Make Pizza Seasoning
- MIX. Combine dried oregano, dried basil, dried onion flakes, garlic powder, dried thyme, dried fennel, paprika, and black pepper. Mix well.
- STORE. Seal in a container and use the amount listed in your recipe, or to taste. Use it to season Marinara Sauce, spaghetti sauce, sprinkle on salads, pasta, Garlic Bread, and more.

Kristyn’s Recipe Tips
- To allow the seasoning mix to last longer, use herbs and spices that are not close to expiration. We love to have pizza seasoning on hand!
- You will need 3 times more fresh herbs than what is listed for the dried herb. Mince the herbs and toss well. Store in the refrigerator for about 7 days.
- Try it sprinkled on garlic bread, roasted vegetables, chicken, or mixed into pasta sauces or salad dressings.

When do you put on the seasonings? …
I liked it but I’ll probably leave out the fennel next time. The anise/licorice flavor on my pizza was odd.
Thanks for the feedback and for giving the seasoning a try!
I’ll be making this come Fall. I grow, dry and grind my own own herbs and onions
Sounds amazing! I’m sure the seasoning will be especially good with fresh herbs!
Hi Kristyn,
I can certainly understand how your pizza seasoning got 5 stars (before I got here). It is outstanding. The first time I made it I needed a last minute seasoning for a throw-together pasta. We liked it so much that I made it again using home dehydrated herbs from my garden. They are usually a milder flavor than the store bought ones so I increased those 5 herbs to 1 1/2 Tablespoons. Again, it turned out great. We will be using it from now on. Thanks!
Oh I’m so glad you enjoyed the seasoning recipe!! That makes me so happy to hear.
Hey Kristyn,
I am wondering on your yummy pizza seasoning recipe are the nutritional facts calculated for the whole batch/recipe or is that for just 1 serving?? I Love it & am thinking of making some as part of a basket gift for a group, but one person has medical issues & will need to know the amount of carbs in it. That’s why I am asking.
Thank you & Happy Cooking!
Carbs? It’s a seasoning blend Miss.
Seasonings are made from real food that contained real carbs before they were dried and transformed into what we know as herbs and spices. As such, they have carbs.
What makes this 183K calories? It’s just spices.
How much does this make? I want to put it in my spice rack, but need to know how much to make
It makes about 12 Tbsps… which is equivalent to about 3/4 cup.
You say to write an “expired” date on the bottle, but it is really a “best by” date. This mixture isn’t going to go bad. It will just fade flavor-wise.
Thanks for the tip!
Perfect combination. Thank you for the recipe!
Great sprinkled on a bagel with margarine.
I blended the whole fennel seeds in my ninja blender to help break them down.
Chemical reactions are, in part, a function of temperature. So, once you have made your seasoning, store it in your fridge and it will last longer
We LOVE this seasoning! We use it on pizza, stromboli, sandwiches, salads/dressings, etc. I make Italian Burgers with it: ½# 97% lean hamburger, ½# fresh ground pork + 2 tablespoons Pizza Seasoning (or more to taste); mix well. Make 3 – ⅓-lb or 4 – ¼-lb burgers. Cook any way you like: pan fry, grill, broil. Serve on buns (bottom-to-top) with Butterhead lettuce, burger, onion slice, crispy bacon, mozzarella/mild white cheddar slice, and marinara sauce.
I’m so happy to hear you love the seasoning! And how fun… look at all the things you put it on! I love it!
How does this compare to Penzeys frozen pizza seasoning?
I haven’t ever tried Penzeys pizza seasoning, so I’m not sure. But we definitely are fans of this homemade seasoning!! 😉
I was making a pasta salad that called for pizza seasoning but I didn’t have any. This recipe saved the day! So quick & easy and I had everything in my pantry to make it! And now I love to use this on pizza as well!
Thank you Kristyn for your PIZZA SEASONING RECIPE. Please could you tell me (a very inexperienced newbie cook) how or where this “seasoning” is applied? (In the Pizza dough? In the Pizza (base) sauce? On top of the Pizza toppings? or on top of the final sprinklings of cheese on top of the “toppings”?
I’m guessing it needs to be sprinkled over the the pizza toppings just before placing into the oven to cook. ???
I’m sorry this is such a dumb question.
Thank you.
Best wishes
Tony
Oh. I’m so sorry to have just asked the same question again.
I’ve only just now seen your answer.
Please ignore my last question.
You fully answered my original question a few days ago.
Thank you so very much!!!
Best wishes.
Stay safe & keep smiling (even if under your useless, needless Covid mask)
Stay strong
Tony
Thanks so much!! Hope the pizza seasoning turns out great for you! 🙂
Hi Kristyn,
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful insights and learnings.
I’m so looking forward to following your instructions and making for the first time my own Pizza Base.
Please forgive me as I’m very new to baking etc, but I do have a dumb question to ask you.
I love all the ingredients in your “Pizza Seasoning” but I don’t know where these should be added.
Should this “seasoning” be mixed with the “dough” (base) or with the Sauce (Red or White?) or sprinkled over the pizza “toppings”?
Sorry to everyone reading this dumb question.
I’m a newbie but super keen to learn. 🙂
Thank you
Best wishes
Tony
Not a dumb question at all! I wouldn’t suggest putting it in your dough (I guess you could?). When assembling the pizza, I would include it as a topping. So spread your sauce, add some pizza seasoning, then cheese and other toppings. Or you could add it to your sauce too to bump up the flavor. Either way! It just takes your homemade pizza to the next level.
I used your seasoning in the dough for my tomato no-knead peasant bread…pretty yummy!
Thank you, Kristyn! I like your recipe of pizza seasoning & look forward to using it
You’re welcome! Hope you enjoy the seasoning!!
You’re welcome! Hope you enjoy the seasoning!!
I take it back! The measurement are there webpage just didn’t show that section till I posted my comment. So strange!
Do you use whole fennel seeds or ground?
Great question! I use whole fennel seeds.:)
Thank you. These are classic pizza flavors.
You’re welcome! So glad to hear you enjoy the flavors!
If it doesn’t have fennel in it it’s not a pizza seasoning, great job.
I’m so happy you enjoyed the seasoning! Thanks for sharing!
This is definitely a keeper recipe! I add it to mY toMato sauce and also a little to our meat. It takes homemade pizza to a whole new leveL! Thanks fOr sharing Such an easy and yummy recipe.
Great ideas!! I will have to try that! Thank you for sharing that 🙂
How does this pizza seasoning recipe provide 183 kcals per serving and 43 gramsCHO?
I wondered this, too!
The 183 calories for the pizza seasoning is not for one serving or slice of pizza, but for the whole pizza. I’m so sorry for the confusion! I hope this helps!
How much tomato sauce will i use for this pizza seasoning
You would use however much you’d like. This makes more than you would want to add to pizza. Depending on how big the pizza, I use anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon. So, it’s just a personal preference on how much tomato sauce.
43g of CARBS?
Where AND how DO I use the seasoning?
You can use it on any pizza. I would add it on the crust before baking 🙂
i followed the recipe as written. excellent!! I’ll be adding this to my stash of keeper recipes.
Yay!! Glad you did! Thank you for trying it 🙂
yum! i love the flavor this adds!
