Roast’s Best Friend

What better than a delicious Roast smothered in pot roast gravy to bring the warmth of a home-cooked meal?

Roast has always been a Sunday Dinner favorite along with Mashed Potatoes, but we’ve decided they’re ALWAYS better when you have gravy to go with them.

With that in mind, we came up with no-fail pot roast gravy recipe using the drippings from the roast. Not only does it make the gravy beyond flavorful, but it also makes it extra simple.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

  • The “gravy on top”. Pot roast gravy made with pan drippings is perfect on your favorite Mashed Potatoes or crispy Oven Roasted Red Potatoes.
  • No fuss. This gravy is very simple and requires just a few ingredients (AND simple instructions).
  • Full of flavor. Use beef broth or pan drippings for a FLAVORFUL and delicious gravy!
Straining broth through a mesh strainer.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 cups roast drippings from cooked pot roast We use a chuck roast to make this Crock Pot Pot Roast recipe.
  • 2½ tablespoons cornstarch
  • salt and black pepper to taste – We also like using garlic salt with parsley flakes.

How to Make Gravy From Pot Roast

  1. STRAIN. Pour the 2-3 cups beef drippings from your cooked pot roast through a strainer to remove any solids. Pour the broth into a skillet.
    • If you don’t have enough liquid for 2-3 cups, simply add some beef broth. If you don’t have a carton of beef broth on hand, use a beef bouillon cube and water to make broth.
  2. SLURRY. Remove 3 tablespoons of the broth and add to a small bowl, then whisk with 2½ tablespoons of cornstarch until well blended. This slurry will act as a thickener for the gravy.
  3. SIMMER. Bring the broth in the skillet to a simmer, then whisk in the cornstarch mixture. Cook until thickened.
    • Taste and add salt and pepper according to taste. For a little extra flavor, we like to use garlic salt with parsley flakes.
  4. SERVE. Mashed Potatoes and Roast are two of the most common dishes that are delicious with a coating of gravy. Some other delicious recipes include Meatballs and Buttermilk Biscuits

Thicken the Gravy

Allow time for the cornstarch slurry to simmer. If the gravy still isn’t thick enough, add a cornstarch slurry: In a separate bowl combine 2-3 teaspoons of cornstarch with an equal amount of cold water. Stir it into the gravy and simmer.

I have found that “Better Than Bullion” the Roast Beef version is so much better than regular beef broth or bullion. I always use beef broth in my roast dish but I find it lacks enough beefy flavor. Adding a small amount of better than bullion will take the gravy to a whole new level. I am not a spokesperson for this product but I have been cooking for over 50 years and when I finally tried it instead of regular bullion cubes I was hooked.
