what is White TrasH?

Hello, it’s me – Lily! Today, I am sharing a recipe for White Chocolate Trail Mix (AKA White Trash recipe).

I bet you’re probably wondering why this recipe is called “White Trash”! Well, it’s because it almost seems like someone took the remains of whatever ingredients they had in their pantry (that would otherwise be thrown in the trash), combined them, and coated it in white chocolate.

I know that sounds crazy, but trust meโ€”it’s actually the most delicious combination of sweet and salty ingredients!

This white trash recipe is great for parties, and we really like to make it during holidaysโ€”especially Christmas! It makes a great neighbor gift or cookie plate filler.

In fact, we made this for Santa on Christmas Eve this year! We knew he might be sick of cookies so we made him this. We made him White Chocolate M&M Popcorn last year, and it was all gone so we knew he’d enjoy this mix this year!

how to make white trash

You won’t believe how simple this white trash recipe is to make. It literally takes NO more than 10 minutes from start to finish.

MIX. Just combine all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Then, in a medium pot, melt almond bark according to package directions. Pour bark over ingredients, making sure to mix well.

SET. Spread out on wax paper to set. You can also put it in the fridge to speed up the setting process!

Note: Some people make white trash with actual white chocolate chips, however I prefer to use almond bark. It melts really well and hardens/dries super fast without having to keep it in the fridge to harden.

If you’re not already familiar, almond bark is a copycat chocolate confection that is made with vegetable fats instead of cocoa butter. It tastes exactly like chocolate and you can find it in different chocolate flavors. Find it in grocery stores in packages, blocks, or round discs in the isle with other baking supplies.

I double this recipe all the time, and it’s the perfect amount for parties!

Switch it up however you like!

Because this is kind of a hodgepodge of ingredients you really can use whatever you have on hand. This is a “classic” version, but some other ingredients people use in their white chocolate trail mix include:

  • potato chips
  • fritos
  • popcorn
  • pretzel sticks
  • reese’s pieces
  • marshmallows
  • other cereals like Kix, Cap’n Crunch, different varieties of Chex

You can also dress it up for a holiday (like Christmas or Valentine’s!) by using holiday M&M’s that are specific colors! If you’re feeling extra fancy, throw in some colorful sprinkles while you’re at it!

How to Store White Trash

Store the finished white chocolate trail mix in an airtight tupperware container or a zip plastic bag. Keep it at room temperature or in the fridge. It should last for 1-2 weeks if stored in an airtight container.

I do not recommend freezing this trail mix- it will not thaw at a good consistency.

But, like we said – it’s great for parties and can be made plenty ahead of time so you don’t have to make it the day of a get together. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have been making this treat for years. It is a family favorite. We have wrestlers in the family and can’t eat all the Christmas goodies. Our kids are off to state championships this week. We get pillowcase and have their names, weight and team logos printed on them. Our community gets together and stuffs their cases with sports drinks, gifts, trinkets, and junk food for their trip home. They asked me to fill their pillowcases with my whitetrash. Their favorite version is with chocolate and rice chex, golden grahams and fruitloops with pretzels and peanuts. I use almond bark. You are right, there is no wrong way to switch this up. It’s delicious.

This is so good it is dangerous. Since I made it for Christmas, I found vanilla flavored marshmallows at my store. OMG! Takes the taste to a whole new, dreamy level.
