Scoop of Crack Chicken Dip.

Why is it called crack dip?

“Crack” is actually a term used for a certain combination of ingredients: cheese, Ranch seasoning and bacon.

Aside from crack chicken there’s crack bread, crack pasta, crack dip—all referring to the use of those 3 ingredients.

This flavor combo is crazy delicious and maybe a bit addicting—especially in dip form which is another reason why it got its name. 😉

The warm and gooey cheese and crispy salted bacon really send this dip over the top! It is ooey, gooey, and so easy to make. Dip in your favorite crackers, veggies, chips or bread and it’s sure to disappear in no time.

How to Make Crack Chicken Dip

PREP. Preheat oven to 400°F.

MIX. Combine cream cheese, Ranch dressing mix, chopped bacon, 1 cup of the cheese (remaining will be reserved for the top), sour cream and shredded chicken in a medium bowl. Stir together well and pour into a greased 8×8 baking dish.

BAKE + SERVE. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake for 20-22 minutes. Serve warm.

Recipe Variations:

  • Shredded Cheese: I like to use colby jack, but you can use any type of cheese you like—Mexican blend, Monterrey jack, cheddar cheese, etc.
  • Bacon: We cook fresh bacon and cut it up into bits, but you can also use pre-made bacon crumbles.
  • Additional Toppings: To add some green to this dip, you can garnish it with chopped green onions or fresh parsley.
  • In the Slow Cooker: This dip can also be made in a smaller crock pot (about 2 qt). Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and add it to the crock pot. Cook on Low heat for 2-3 hours, or until warm throughout.

FAQ

Best way to make shredded chicken? This recipe calls for 1 cup cooked and shredded chicken. Using a shredded rotisserie chicken is quick, easy and flavorful. You can also make Oven Baked Chicken to shred.

I personally love to make a large amount of Shredded Chicken in a crock pot and have it stored in the freezer to use in various recipes. Lastly, you can use canned chicken.

What to serve with? Tostito or Frito scoops work best, but any tortilla chips would work great. Some other items to dip include:

  • Carrot Sticks
  • Celery Sticks
  • Crackers
  • Crusty Bread

How to make ahead? Assemble in advance, but don’t bake. Cover with plastic wrap or a lid and store it in the fridge. When you’re ready to serve, just bake it in the oven as directed. You may need to add about 5 minutes to the cook time to ensure a warm cook throughout.

How to store? STORE leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or in the freezer for 1-2 months. The texture may change a bit after being frozen, but it is still delicious.

  1. The list of ingredients calls for only one cup of shredded cheese, yet the instructions say this:

Combine cream cheese, Ranch dressing mix, chopped bacon, 1 cup of the cheese (remaining will be reserved for the top)…

Where does the remaining cheese for the top come from if all that’s listed for the entire recipe is one cup?

    1. Thanks for pointing that out! We’ll get the post updated. For now, if you like it extra cheesy, use that full 1 cup and a little more sprinked on the top. Otherwise, use 3/4 cup in the casserole and the last 1/4 for the top.

You know, me and my cat love eating soup at 3 am and we really enjoy going on trips to the park and we so rarely find crack “chicken” that we actually enjoy, you have made that happen and so I’M ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.
