how to make texas roadhouse rolls
WET INGREDIENTS. Heat the milk in a small saucepan and bring it to a near boil. The milk will begin to steam and small bubbles will form. At this point remove the pot from the heat and let it cool to lukewarm. Pour the milk into a small bowl and add the yeast and honey. Mix until well combined and let it stand for 5 minutes.
REMAINING INGREDIENTS. In a separate larger bowl add 3 tablespoons of melted butter, the milk mixture, egg and 2 cups of flour.
KNEAD. Mix and then knead the dough for a few minutes. You can use a mixer with a dough hook, or knead by hand. Gradually add the remaining 2 cups of flour until the mixture is combined and bread dough forms. Add salt and knead for 8 minutes.
ROLL. Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a 12×18 inch rectangle that is 3/8inch thick.
CUT. Fold it in half so it measures 12×9 inches. Cut 12 rolls. Each roll will measure 3x3inches. (*Note for smaller rolls- Roll the rectangle to 12.5×20 inches. Fold in half and then cut 20 smaller rolls. These smaller rolls will measure 2 1/2 inches square.)
RISE. Lightly grease a cookie sheet and place the rolls 1-2 inches apart. Cover and allow the dough to rise for another hour or until doubled in size.
BAKE. Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF and bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes. The tops will be a light golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush the tops with the remaining butter.

Tips + Storing Info
Substitute with 1 โ tsp instant yeast. Just make sure to combine your instant yeast with the flour instead of adding it to the milk like you would the regular yeast.
To achieve light and fluffy rolls, do not over mix your dough. Itโs fine to use a Bosch, KitchenAid, or any other electric mixer just make sure not to mix the dough longer than 8-10 minutes. If you are kneading the dough by hand 10-12 minutes is the general rule of thumb. Your dough will be smooth and will hold its shape when itโs good to go!
Make and freeze these rolls ahead of time:
- Just make sure to place your newly formed rolls on a parchment or foil lined tray in the freezer before they have had a chance to rise. You can wrap them with some plastic wrap and cover with some foil.
- It is best to use Active Dry yeast and not the instant yeast if you are planning to freeze your premade rolls. You may want to add up to 50% more yeast to your dough as well, to be sure it rises well after defrosting.
- For best results they should be used within a month of freezing and defrosted overnight in the refrigerator before baking.
- You can also defrost them at room temperature on the counter if you are short on time. But remember since they are frozen it will also take a few hours for them to rise and double in size.ย
- ย We recommend making the cinnamon butter fresh and adding it to the rolls after they come out of the oven.
Living here in the desert itโs usually warm enough for dough to rise correctly, but if itโs cold or chilly where you are, then here are some helpful tips to make sure your dough rises just right:
- Boil some water and place it in a bowl or pan on the bottom rack of your oven, place your rolls on top and close the door to the oven. This method usually works like a charm!
- You can also try preheating your oven to around 300 degrees and setting your rolls on the top of the oven in a warm spot to rise. (Make sure not to put them in the oven just yet!)ย

My husband and I love! Texas Roadhouse rolls so I’m super excited to try this. Just a note: I think there is supposed to be time to rise between steps 4 and 5 but it’s not written in the recipe instructions.
I would like to know about the rise between steps 4 and 5 too. Normally bread dough has 2 rises.
The way you have us roll the dough made it super each to open them in half for a nice spread of your cinnamon butter recipe.
These taste just like the texas roadhouse rolls only better. I didn’t think that was even possible.
This is really easy to make and tasted super delicious! Thank you so much for sharing this amazing recipe! Will surely have this again, highly recommended!
