A Fruity Sauce To Love!

Homemade blueberry sauce is typically made by cooking fresh blueberries with sugar and a thickening agent like cornstarch or tapioca starch. This and similar sauces are commonly used as a drizzle over desserts and breakfast dishes.

Why we love it:

  • Quick. This blueberry sauce recipe uses few ingredients and whips up in no time!
  • Easy. It only uses a handful of ingredients with three simple steps!
  • Delicious. It’s sweet and bright, perfect for topping desserts or breakfast favorites.

Just 3 Ingredients!

  • fresh blueberries – firm and smooth with few blemishes. To use frozen blueberries, place them in a colander or strainer and rinse under cold water to thaw. Drain well before using.
  • granulated sugar – to sweeten the sauce. Increase or decrease the amount according to your desired sweetness.
  • cornstarch and water – to make a slurry that thickens the sauce.

How to Make Blueberry Sauce

  1. BLUEBERRIES. Add the blueberries and sugar to a medium saucepan.
  2. THICKEN. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water. Pour the cornstarch mixture into the pot and stir to combine.
  3. COOK. Heat the sauce over medium heat, stirring frequently, until simmering. Simmer 2-3 minutes, gently mashing some of the blueberries with your spoon, until thickened.
    • Serve warm and refrigerate any leftovers.

Recipe Tips

  • Texture. For a smoother texture mash up more of the blueberries, or leave the blueberries intact for a chunkier sauce.
  • Berries. Replace some of the blueberries with another complementary berry like raspberries, blackberries, or chopped strawberries.
  • Flavor. Mix ½ to 1 teaspoon of flavored extract into the sauce such as vanilla or almond extract. Or add lemon juice and lemon zest.

Storing + Serving

STORE. Keep the homemade blueberry sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

FREEZE it for up to 3 months. Thawed sauce may appear slightly watery due to the release of moisture during freezing. Simply give it a good stir before using.

Serving suggestions. This easy blueberry sauce can be drizzled on everything from cheesecake to overnight oats.
