Christmas Crack is an easy holiday candy made with a layer of saltine crackers, buttery brown sugar toffee, melted chocolate, and festive toppings. It’s sweet, salty, crunchy, chocolatey, and one of our favorite Christmas treats to make every year.

We’ve made this Christmas Crack recipe for years, and the key is getting the toffee just right. Boiling the butter and brown sugar for the full 3 minutes helps it set into that crisp, snappy layer, and you do not need a candy thermometer. With just 5 simple ingredients and about 15 minutes of hands-on time, it’s one of our go-to homemade candy recipes for busy holiday baking.

We especially love making it for neighbor gifts, cookie trays, parties, and family gatherings because one batch makes plenty to share. Once the chocolate sets, just break it into pieces and top it with sprinkles, crushed peppermint, nuts, or flaky sea salt.

Why you’ll love it + Why it works:

  • Only 5 Ingredients. Simple pantry staples turn into an easy homemade holiday candy.
  • No Candy Thermometer. Timing the toffee makes this much easier than traditional candy-making.
  • Made for Sharing. One batch makes plenty for Christmas trays, parties, and neighbor gifts.
  • Three-Minute Toffee. Boiling the butter and brown sugar for the full 3 minutes helps the candy set properly and keeps the crackers crisp.
  • Sweet + Salty. Saltine crackers balance the buttery toffee and chocolate so every bite has plenty of crunch and flavor.
Ingredients for Christmas Crack on the counter.

Christmas Crack Ingredients

  • Saltine crackers (1 sleeve, about 35 to 40 crackers): Creates the crunchy, salty base for the candy.
    • Change the crackers: Try graham crackers, Club crackers, or Ritz crackers for a different flavor and texture.
  • Unsalted butter (1 cup, 2 sticks): Melts with the brown sugar to make the toffee layer rich and buttery.
  • Brown sugar (1 cup): Sweetens the toffee and gives it that caramel-like flavor.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips (2 cups): Add a smooth chocolate layer that balances the toffee. Higher quality chocolate like Ghirardelli, will melt and set the best. Change the flavor with white chocolate chips, dark chocolate, peanut butter chips, or milk chocolate chips.
  • Sprinkles: Make the Christmas crack festive and fun for the holidays. Add chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, or pistachios), crushed peppermints, holiday M&M’s, toffee bits, flaky sea salt, or a drizzle of white chocolate.

How to Make Christmas Crack

PREP. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a 10×15-inch pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper, and lightly grease.

CRACKERS. Place saltine crackers on the baking sheet to cover the entire pan in a single layer of crackers.

TOFFEE. Melt butter and brown sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, bring it to a boil for 3 minutes while stirring constantly.

  • Stir constantly and scrape the sides of the pan so sugar crystals do not build up and make the toffee gritty.
  • The brown sugar mixture must boil for exactly 3 minutes. If it doesn’t boil long enough the mixture won’t set and will create soggy crackers.

BAKE. Carefully pour the mixture over the crackers. Spread it evenly over the top so that all of the crackers are covered. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool for 5 minutes.

CHOCOLATE. Add chocolate chips to a medium heatproof bowl. Microwave on medium power for 1-minute bursts, stirring between each. When the chocolate is almost melted, stir until smooth.

Spoon the melted chocolate over the crackers, and spread it smooth to completely cover the pan. Decorate with sprinkles before the chocolate sets.

SHORTCUT: Sprinkle the chocolate chips directly over the hot toffee, let them sit for about 5 minutes, then spread once softened.

CRACK. Let the toffee harden until the chocolate is set (at room temperature or in the fridge). Once completely hardened, remove from the pan and peel the aluminum foil off. Break or “crack” it into pieces.

Fun Variations

  • Peppermint. Top with crushed candy canes.
  • Nutty. Add chopped pecans, pistachios, or walnuts.
  • Sweet + Salty. Finish with flaky sea salt.
  • Chocolate Swirl. Drizzle with white chocolate or peanut butter chips.
  • Candy. Add mini M&M’s, chopped Reese’s, or toffee bits.
  • Different Crackers. Try graham crackers, Ritz, or Club crackers.

Kristyn’s Recipe Tips

  • Timing. When making the toffee, boiling for exactly 3 minutes is crucial for achieving the right consistency; too short and it won’t set, too long and it can become brittle.
  • Scrape the sides well. Carefully scrape the sides of the pot. Sugar will crystallize on the sides of the pan and can get scraped into the mixture, causing it to be gritty.
  • Use good chocolate. Semi-sweet chocolate chips work great, but you can also use milk or dark chocolate for a different twist. High-quality chocolate melts smoother and tastes even better.
  • Added Flavor: Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and ¼ to ½ teaspoon sea salt to the toffee mixture once you take it off the heat.
  • Decorate quickly. Add sprinkles right after spreading the chocolate so they stick before it sets. Some of our favorite toppings are: chopped pecans, walnuts, or pistachios, crushed peppermints, holiday M&M’s, flaky sea salt, or a drizzle of white chocolate.
  • Cool completely before breaking. For clean, snappy pieces, let it harden fully at room temp or in the fridge before cracking into chunks.
  • Make ahead: This is a great holiday candy to make several days in advance. Store it in an airtight container with parchment between layers until ready to gift or serve.

Recipe FAQ

Why is my Christmas crack chewy?

Make sure the saltines are fresh, boil the butter and brown sugar for the full 3 minutes, and let the finished candy cool completely before breaking it apart. If the layers are still warm, the toffee may seem soft instead of crisp.

Why did my toffee separate?

Keep the heat at medium, stir constantly while the mixture boils, and make sure no water gets into the pan. Cooking the sugar mixture too quickly can also cause the butter to separate.

Why isn’t my chocolate melting?

Place the pan back in the warm oven for a minute or two, then spread once softened. High-quality chocolate or chopped baking chocolate usually melts more smoothly than some chocolate chips.

How to store Christmas crack?

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 5 days, in the fridge for 10 days, or in the freezer for 4-6 weeks. Easily make Christmas crack candy in advance and have it on hand for cookie plates or neighbor gifts. Place parchment or wax paper between layers so the chocolate does not stick.

Christmas crack is a family favorite. I did see on social media of using ritz crackers but I think you can’t go wrong either way. It’s so yummy!
