We Love our Favorite Wontons!

My family LOVES Asian food! One of the recipes we like to make and one the hubby loves most is cream cheese wontons – have you had them?

If we aren’t making Fried Egg Rolls or Wonton Nachos, this is the recipe we make.

Why we love them:

  • Easy. This wonton recipe is quick, easy, and perfectly crispy!
  • Delicious. It’s crispy, tasty, and full of a delicious cream cheese mixture that we love.
  • A tasty side. They are easy to make and the perfect side to any of our Asian dishes (like Sweet and Sour Chicken or General Tso’s Chicken).

Ingredients

  • cream cheese
  • lemon pepper
  • garlic pepper
  • paprika
  • egg roll or wonton wrappers
  • fry oil   fill the pan with 1-2 inches of oil with a high smoking point like vegetable oil, canola oil, peanut oil, or olive oil suitable for frying.
Folding wonton wrappers in half with filling inside.

How to Make Wontons

  1. PREP. Heat 1-2 inches of oil in a small frying pan on medium heat.
  2. FILLING. Mix spices into softened cream cheese until well incorporated.
  3. WRAPPERS. Slice egg roll wrappers with a pizza cutter into 4 small squares. Won Ton wrappers are already cut to the size you need.
  4. FILL. Using a small ice cream scoop place a teaspoon-sized ball in the center of the square wrapper. Dip your finger in water and spread it on the four corners of the wrapper and fold up.
  5. FRY. When oil is hot, fry until all sides are golden brown. Depending on how hot your oil is, you may need to fry it for a shorter or longer amount of time. Enjoy with yummy sweet and sour sauce!

Pro Tip!

Wonton wrappers can dry out easily. Once you open the package keep them covered with a damp paper towel.

Baking Variations

  • Air fryer. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F for about 5 minutes. Put the wontons in the air fryer, lightly spray with cooking spray, and cook for 3-5 minutes.
  • Bake in the oven. Grease a cookie sheet with nonstick spray and preheat the oven to 400°F. Make the wontons as directed and then bake for 10-12 minutes.
    • For more control over where they get brown, brush the top with a little bit of egg.
    • Or try Baked Cream Cheese Rangoon, which is very similar.

Serving + Storing Info

STORE. Keep leftover wontons in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat at 300°F for 5-10 minutes.

Dipping sauce suggestions. We love to dip these homemade wontons in any of these favorite sauces.
