a cute, creepy crawly treat

We love a good dirt cake dessert. It’s a kid-friendly, taste delicious, and super fun dessert!! Dirt and worms are one of the kids’ favorites, it’s a creepily good treat

Dirt Cake with Worms is essentially a chocolate pudding mixture with crushed Oreo cookie crumbs and garnished with gummy worms candy! It comes together in minutes and is always a big hit with the kids.

Whip up this dirt cake with gummy worms as a spooky treat for a Halloween party, or an extra fun summer goodie!

Ingredients for dirt cake with worms.

how to make it

OREO. Begin by smashing up Oreos. I put mine in my food processor and blended until they are crumbs. Set aside.

CREAM CHEESE. Stir cream cheese, butter, and powdered sugar with mixer in a medium bowl. Fold in whipped cream and mix until well blended.

PUDDING. In a separate large bowl mix pudding mix and milk with a whisk. Once combined well and thickened, fold the pudding mixture into cream cheese mixture.

ASSEMBLE .Spoon a few tablespoons of Oreo crumbs in your cup or small jar. Then add some of the chocolate mousse mixture (I do this by adding the mixture to a gallon bag and cutting off the corner so it goes in the jar more easily). Bang down on a wash cloth on the table to get all bubbles out. Add a few more tablespoons of Oreo Crumbs.

GARNISH + SERVE. Top off with Oreo crumbs and refrigerate until ready to serve. Add gummy worms right before serving.

variations

Pudding: To get the color of dirt for the worms to lounge in we opted for brown instant chocolate pudding mix. However, you can use any pudding flavor such as instant vanilla pudding, white chocolate, cream cheese or even pistachio, banana cream, Oreo, or butterscotch pudding.

No matter what pudding mixture that you use be sure that you purchase INSTANT pudding. Also, you are going to be using the pudding powder. Do not make pudding to use in the recipe.

Serving Dish: You can serve this as one big plot of dirt or divide it up into individual portions.

  • Large Plot: Use a large glass bowl of rectangular dish. You will need a 9×13 dish or larger. Fill the bottom with crushed Oreos, add the chocolate layer and top with Oreos and worms.
  • Individual: Since this treat is geared towards kids I suggest using clear plastic cups. Though glass jars work too. To make adding the mousse mixture into the cups easier I suggest putting it in a gallon bag. Cut off the corner so you can easily and cleanly squeeze it into the cups/jars.
  • Layered look: Whether you are serving it all together or in smaller portions, another idea is to layer the pudding and Oreos. Similar to a trifle or parfait. You can even place a worm or two deeper in the pudding right next to the side of the cup so it’s visible.

recipe tips

Tips for crushing Oreos: Crush the entire cookie—do not remove the filling. You can crush your Oreo cookies in a blender or food processor if you want them to be super fine. I prefer to crush them in a ziplock bag so I get both small and chunky pieces.

Some more dirt cake tips:

  • Use whole milk for the creamiest texture.
  • FOLD do not mix: You will see this instruction in step 2 and again in step 3. This helps keep everything fluffy.
  • Make sure your butter and cream cheese are not too soft and definitely not melted
  • Chill for at least 2 hours before serving

Making Ahead: I typically make this the morning of, but it can also be made up to 24 hours in advance. I recommend placing the crushed Oreos and worms on top right before serving so they don’t get soft before serving.

This dessert STORES pretty well, which means it can be made ahead of time and leftovers can be stored for later. The only word of caution is that when stored for too long, the crushed oreos tend to get a bit soft.

If you have leftovers, remove the gummy worms so they don’t get slimy. Cover the dirt cake with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for 2-3 days.

I did this (today, 8/19/23) for my son’s 14th birthday. He chose vanilla pudding and vanilla oreos. I kept the pudding cheesecake mixture, worms, and the oreos separate since most of the attendees would be adults. It worked out very well. Everyone commented on how good it was.

    1. That makes me so happy to hear! Thanks for sharing what you did. Glad to hear the dessert was a success!

  2. Does this use the 5 oz or 3.9 oz box of instant pudding mix? I don’t know what size to use for this recipe, lol.

My mom used to put Oreos and gummy worms on regular chocolate pudding, but this mixture is definitely more delicious. YUMMY!
