A Favorite in the Crock Pot

Cobblers and crisps are some of our favorite desserts, especially in the fall.

We also love having all things apple-flavored during these months, like Apple Cobbler and Apple Crisp. Because things get to be a little hectic in the fall, we wanted to come up with the perfect Crock Pot Apple Crisp that hits all of those fall favorites.

This recipe is so good and so simple that we have it on repeat all fall long. It reminds us of an Apple Pie but with fewer steps! Serve it up with a scoop of Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramel Sauce for a perfect treat!

WHY WE LOVE IT:

  • Fall aroma. Allowing this to cook in your crock pot will fill your home with delicious and comfy fall flavors all day long.
  • Hands-free cooking. With minimal prep time let the slow cooker do the work!
  • Apples. This fall dessert recipe is a great way to use all the ample apples available in the fall.

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped – or use pecans in place of walnuts or a mixture of the two

Filling

  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice – fresh lemon juice or from a bottle. You can also add in a little lemon zest.
  • optional toppings – A scoop of Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, a dollop of Whipped Cream, or Caramel Sauce drizzle

How to Make Crock Pot Apple Crisp

  1. TOPPING. In a medium bowl, whisk 1 cup flour, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Grate the ½ cup cold butter into the bowl. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender or two knives, until the pieces are no larger than pea-sized. Add 1 cup chopped walnuts and toss to combine.
  2. FILLING. Spray the crock pot with cooking spray, then add 6 cups apple slices to the crock pot. Add ⅓ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and toss to combine.
  3. COOK. Sprinkle the topping in an even layer over the apples. Cover and cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours. Partially uncover, and continue cooking for one hour to remove the excess moisture from the topping. Serve warm with Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream or Whipped Cream on top.

Recipe FAQ

Apple crisp vs apple cobbler?

For the most part, the two desserts are the same except that a crumble uses oats in the streusel topping. You can easily add oats along with the nuts when sprinkling the topping onto the apple mixture.

Why is my apple crisp runny?

Some apples produce extra moisture so stick to baking apples. If you use other types you may want to increase the amount of cornstarch to help thicken the sauce. Note that the filling will thicken as it cools. Be sure to remove the lid at the end when cooking in the crock pot to allow the top to crisp up.

How do I get a crisp topping when using the crock pot?

Place a sheet of paper towels over the top of the pot and then place the lid on. The paper towel will help absorb moisture during the first part of cooking. Remove the paper towel when you adjust the lid to finish the last hour. You could also remove the ceramic crock pot, insert it into the oven, and broil the top to make it crispier.

How to store leftover Crock Pot Apple Crisp?

Put the leftovers in one large container or divide them into individual serving-sized containers. Store in the fridge for 2-3 days or freezer for up to 3 months.

I have never made apple crisp in a crockpot before but have wanted to try this recipe and was so surprised and happy how yummy it came out! I did crack the lid at the end and that really helped prevent it from being soggy. Will definitely make again!
