Biscuits and gravy are a southern classic breakfast and a FAVORITE at our house!

Mom has made these forever and now our sister is the one who makes them for morning gatherings. They are loved by the entire family because who doesn’t love a warm and flaky biscuit smothered in a thick and creamy sausage gravy?!

Our version is made easy with canned biscuits and a simple gravy – it’s packed with flavor and on the table in under 30 minutes!

It’s easy to double to feed a crowd, and hearty enough to fill those bellies! Serve it for breakfast or dinner – it’s great any time of the day.

Why we think you’ll love it:

  • A classic. Biscuits smothered in a delicious sausage gravy are hard NOT to enjoy. It’s a best-loved classic for a reason!
  • On the table in no time. Prepped in 5 minutes and made in under 30 minutes, this dish is great for holidays, brunches, and weekends.
  • Made simple. Using canned biscuit dough makes these even easier!

Biscuits and Gravy Ingredients

  • 1 (16.3-ounce) can buttermilk biscuits – store-bought or our Easy Homemade Biscuits
  • 1 (16-ounce) pork breakfast sausage – mild, medium, or hot sausage
  • ½ – 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1-2 cups milk – We use 2% or higher, but half and half or Buttermilk works too.
  • salt and black pepper to taste – Add heat with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes, jalapeños, or Tabasco sauce.
  • optional additions – sauteed mushrooms or bell peppers, or cooked bacon bits

How to Make Biscuits and Gravy

  1. BISCUITS. Bake 1 (16.3-ounce) can biscuits according to package directions.
  2. GRAVY. Meanwhile, in a saucepan over medium-high heat, cook 16 ounces of sausage, chopping into small pieces until browned and cooked through.
    • Do not drain excess grease from the pan. The drippings will help bring the flour and milk together.
    • Stir in flour ½ cup at a time until sausage has a nice coating.
    • Slowly add 1-2 cups of milk until you have reached your desired consistency. For a runny gravy add more milk, for a thicker gravy add less milk. If you find you have added too much milk, add some flour to thicken it up.
  3. SERVE. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve gravy immediately over warm biscuits.

Kristyn’s Recipe Tips

  • Don’t drain the sausage fat. It combines with the flour to create the roux that makes your gravy rich and flavorful.
  • Add milk slowly. Pour it in gradually while stirring to avoid lumps and reach your perfect consistency.
  • Season well. Salt and plenty of black pepper are key for classic sausage gravy flavor.
  • Serve right away. Gravy thickens as it cools, so it’s best enjoyed hot over fresh, fluffy biscuits.

I love biscuits and gravy and have eaten ALOT of it. Canned biscuits are nothing compared to a good homemade biscuit. I call them “sopping” biscuits because they pick up that gravy. I have also made gravy with bacon grease. Yummy.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I agree!! Homemade are the best! Thank you for stopping by!
