Naan bread is the BEST! Have you made it before?

We first tried it a few years back and the whole family is OBSESSED with how soft, simple, and delicious it is. Most often we eat naan warm with butter or garlic butter (it’s heavenly on its own), but it’s also perfect for dipping in hummus or pairing with soups or curries – a tasty side dish similar to Fry Bread.

This bread freezes very well so you can have plenty on hand when you need a quick and easy side or dinner. Although this flatbread may seem intimidating, our homemade naan is fail-proof and more simple to make then you think!

  • Just a few steps! Believe it or not, this recipe is very simple and fail-proof.
  • Perfect for dipping. Yes, naan bread is great to eat on its own, but it’s also the perfect side for Curry as well as other Indian dishes.
  • Have plenty on hand. This recipe is perfect for making ahead of time as well as freezing for later, which is great for busy weeknights.
  • ½ cup warm water between 105-115°F
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast or active dry yeast. Normally, instant yeast does not need to be activated in warm water first, but for this recipe, we find it tends to create a fluffier texture than simply adding it to the flour or using active dry yeast.
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar to help the yeast bloom
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil vegetable oil or melted coconut oil
  • ¼ cup plain yogurt – or plain Greek yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 whole egg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2½ – 3 cups all-purpose flour see How to Measure Flour Correctly
  • 2 tablespoons butter use salted or unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic – optional flavor (that we love!), add it to the butter and then melt
  • toppings (optional) – We always finish with a sprinkle of fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley!
  1. DOUGH. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl; let the yeast mixture sit for five minutes or till bubbly. Add olive oil, yogurt, egg, salt, and flour. Stir till smooth.
    • Add enough flour to make a soft naan dough. Knead a few times on a floured counter until smooth. Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled.
  2. COOK. Preheat a skillet to medium heat. Cut dough into eight pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece into a 6-inch circle.
    • Add a little oil or non-stick spray to a hot skillet. Cook each circle for 2-3 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown on the bottom. Flip over and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  3. SEASON. Brush the top (the bubbly side) of each naan with melted butter. We added minced garlic to the melted butter, but that is optional.
  • Thickness matters. The thickness should only be about 3-5mm thick. If rolled too thin they’ll be crispy, but if rolled too thick, they won’t form bubbles.
  • Use a hot skillet. Homemade naan is traditionally cooked in a tandoor oven, but you can also use a cast iron skillet, which distributes the high heat equally, giving an even cook to each piece of dough.
  • Use bread flour. Trust us on this one, the extra gluten in bread flour gives this homemade naan recipe its signature light and chewy texture.

To freeze, use 3 teaspoons of yeast in the dough to compensate for any that will die in the freezer. Let the dough rise to double, punch it down, and divide it into balls. Place the dough balls on a baking sheet and freeze for up to 3 months. Once frozen, store them together in a freezer-safe container. To serve, let the dough thaw and cook.

How to make it gluten-free?

The higher amount of gluten in bread flour is what gives this recipe the soft, chewy texture. You can substitute the bread flour with 1:1 gluten-free baking flour, but it will affect the texture.

Just wondering if it’s possible to sub the yogurt out for something else? I don’t typically have plain yogurt on hand and sometimes I come up with dinner ideas last min. Something like this would be so easy to make if I can sub yogurt .

Ps I did make this recipe before when I had yogurt on hand and I did enjoy it. It was easy to follow and they turned out nice and puffy.

  4. Sam says:

Does it make a difference if you use Greek yogurt or regular yogurt?

  5. Tami says:

I’m going to try this recipe, I love naan bread but recently found out that I have Celiac Disease and need to be gluten-free. Can I use this recipe using Bob Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Baking Flour and get the same results.
    Thanks

These naan’s have turned out perfectly WHEN I follow the recipe but I’ve tried using garlic oil (rather than olive oil) on one occasion and also tried adding some garlic puree another time but both have been a disaster so just a warning to others!!

  9. Sharon McKay says:

Is naan the same as flat bread?

OMG so easy and so soft and SO MUCH BETTER THAN BOUGHT!!! This recipe is going in my staple recipe file! I loved it and it was easy enough to cook while making the rest of the meal.

  11. Darlene Rankin says:

This was really easy to make and tasted amazing. With the 8 naans, I had my family of four make their own pizzas. I put the ingredients out and they assembled then popped their pizza in the air fryer for a few minutes to finish it off. The naan bread was an instant hit! Thank you for the great recipe!

I am not a bread maker. Period. At all. I tried to make a loaf of bread. Nope. I tried to make tortillas. It wasn’t happening. Then, I got your recipe for naan in one of my emails from you. Initially, I thought, “Why embarrass yourself and upset the kiddos?” But, I went ahead and tried your recipe, and WOW!!! I got it right the first time!! Everybody wanted me to make some to take in their lunch. So, I thought, go big or go home. I went big and added garlic. She shoots, she scores!! I see big things looming large on my ‘naan’ horizon. We thank you for this recipe, Lil Luna, as well as for the others you’ve sent.

  17. Debbie says:

Can I double this recipe or do I have to make two batches?

Made this recipe as part of my Middle Eastern Meze Dinner. Very easy & delicious.I shaped
mine more of an oval shape rather than round.

That’s wonderful! I’m so glad you were able to use the recipe!

  23. Hannah says:

Absolutely delicious! Apart from my lack of skills in making 6in discs haha, they were perfect. I used a flavored olive oil (Tuscan herb) and it was so yummy!

  24. Jasper Rose says:

I made this but my naan was more like pancakes. They weren’t light and airy. I did have trouble getting the dough to rise (think it’s because my house was so cold). So, I stuck it in the oven on the lowest temp with the door open and a pan of hot water on the rack below. It rose better then, but maybe that affected my end product as well. Would love some input on this problem! Otherwise these were easy to make and the flavor was good!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

That could have made a difference. Using instant yeast that activates in water helps with the texture. Also the thickness of the dough does too… if it is too thick, it won’t form bubbles and be light and airy.

  25. C Adams says:

    5 stars
So easy, even I didn’t mess it up. Tastes fantastic!

  26. Lesley Payne says:

I made this tonight just to try it.
It was very good. Soft and airy.
I added Italian Seasoning to the garlic butter and brushed both sides after cooking. Delicious warm!

An absolute hit. So easy too. I did two batches. One plain and one with chopped raisins and walnuts.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Oh that sounds delicious!! So glad to hear the bread was a hit!

  28. Katy M. says:

The texture of this bread is absolutely spot on! It’s fluffy and light with a slight chew. I served it with a chickpea curry and it was heavenly! Thank you Krystin. Your recipes are always wonderful.

    Excellent. Thank you very much.

  30. suzanne robertson says:

How long does it take to rise? . Looks like an awesome recipe

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

It honestly depends on the temperature of your kitchen. The warmer it is, the quicker the dough will rise. You want it to double in size. I’d say probably about an hour… give or take depending on the temperature.

    2. Danyel says:

      5 stars
I just made this, and its wonderful. Not quite as pillowy as what I buy at the grocery store, but the flavor is perfect to go with my Mediterranean lentil soup.
((Side note: I didn’t have plain yogurt so I substituted sour cream. It worked just fine.))

      1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for sharing!! So glad you enjoyed and that the sour cream worked great too.

I wasn’t sure Naan would be approachable, especially with an electric cook top, but this simple recipe, combined with specific tips for using a cast iron skillet, left me surprised I could do it and proud of the result. I’ve come back to this repeatedly. I don’t always do the butter steps because we like to dip the bread in sauces from whatever entree we pair it with, but otherwise I follow this to the letter and it’s reliable every time. This is a GREAT recipe for beginners!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thank you for sharing! I’m so glad to hear the bread was a success!!

  35. Kyera says:

Question, how come in the video you don’t add salt?
    Thanks!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Sometimes we update the ingredient list before having time to update the video again. So I’d say go with the ingredient list and add that 1/2 tsp of salt. But with or without the salt, it tastes quite similar and is really delicious! 🙂

  36. JSC says:

    needs more salt

      Thanks for the feedback.

I don’t ever leave comments after using recipes. This Naan bread recipe was so good! I use the bread to make small pizzas for everyone. Thank you for the recipe.

You’re welcome! I appreciate your review/comment so much! So happy to hear the bread (and pizza!) was a hit.

This bread is amazing! It was wonderful plain, with butter, with garlic butter, and with butter, cinnamon, and sugar. While eating it, we imagined other recipes we could make with this wonderful, easy to make bread.

Recipe is easy to follow and the tips really helped.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

So glad you enjoyed the Naan bread! Thanks for giving it a try!

  39. Nicole says:

This recipe looks divine and I can’t wait to try it!

I lived in India for several years, in the Northern part of the country and we didn’t ever have or see naan. Only roti. I can make a mean roti, but have never attempted naan.

However, my question is, can you use greek yogurt or does it have to be plain yogurt?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, plain greek yogurt is perfect!

  40. JK says:

    5 stars
This recipe is as easy as it sounds and the results are a warm tender and soft naan with a delicate flavor that leaves you wanting more. I followed the direction exactly except I only used 2 cups of flour in total and dusted my kneading surface prior to kneading since the dough was slightly sticky and my rolling pin as well after the rise – this resulted in a very light naan that was perfect alone or used as wrap.

  41. Carolee says:

Storing before baking – to be specific do I store before proofing because it rises in fridge

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, you would store before proofing.

The three stars are for ease of making this, the pleasant taste, and the nice look of the finished naan. However, the taste is pretty much that of bread. I was looking for that grocery store naan taste, and this is not it.

  48. Echo says:

Could you sub out the yogurt with sour cream ?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

      Absolutely!

This is the best naan recipe I’ve come across!! I used my pizza stone to bake it!! Place your pizza stone in the oven on high broil. Let it warm up for 30 min. Cook the naan on the stone!!

Mmm that is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

I’d never eaten or even heard of naan until I was looking for a good flatbread recipe. These were almost sinful! The garlic and butter the goes on at the end raises them up another level. Delicious!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I’m so happy to hear you loved the bread!! That garlic and butter is so yummy on there. Glad you found the recipe!

  77. Jude says:

Video only shows a bowl with ingredients in it…

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Hmmm… the video should show the full process of the recipe. Perhaps it wasn’t loading correctly. Maybe refresh the page and try again!

  78. Connie says:

What is the green in the photos. You don’t mention any toppings or ingredients that are green

    1. Deniza says:

Connie, the green in the picture is cilantro. You can top the naan however you want – some fresh herbs (parsley and cilantro are customarily used), black sesame seeds, etc. Make the naan yours by doing what you like.

    2. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, it’s just a garnish. Not necessary, but you can top with any garnish you prefer. Or leave it plain. Fun and easy to customize. Plus, it makes the picture look pretty too! 😉

      1. Derek says:

Can you add the garnish to the ingredients list and instructions? So annoying how google searched recipes have all this SEO and long story/ramble nonsense and not basic things like that.

Wondering if it matters what yogurt is used, non fat or whole? Thx

    1. Lisa says:

Can you use sour cream instead of yogurt? I know you can do the reverse in some recipes!

      1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Either type should work fine. And yes, you could certainly try to swap the yogurt for sour cream. You’ll have to let us know how it turns out if you use the sour cream.

  80. Virginia says:

Are you able to make the bread with GF flour?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I will never buy naan in the store again. This recipe is very easy and the end result is soft pillowy goodness! I brushed with melted butter and roasted garlic.Bravo!

Oh I’m so happy to hear that!! Thanks for sharing!

  82. Rose Dunk says:

Hi Krystal- I’ve made your naan recipe Several times. My grandkids can’t get enough tans neither can I!
My problem is I divide the dough and then get them all rolled out before I heat my cast iron skillet. It starts out great- bubbles- no burn but towards the middle group it is so hard to get the bubbles. Constant gas heat just burns when I wait and wait for my bubbles.
What is happening and what can I do?
    Sincerely,
    Grandma Rose

Wait until you are ready to put the next one on the pan to roll it out – until just before you put it on the pan. I think this will help (it did for me) 🙂 Happy baking

    2. Lil'Luna Team says:

That’s a great suggestion from AC. Just keep it in little balls and roll out before putting on the pan. That might help it out!

Amazing! Perfect! Family and neighbors ate within minutes! I only had two but WOW mouth watering. I opted for fluffier but still keeping it bubbly on top and cooked with butter and sprinkled with Johnnys garlic spread seasoning! Two batches gone in 10 minutes!!!

Wonderful recipe for a soft and chewy naan. It’s a forgiving recipe, too: after the first rise, I rolled the eight sections into balls and let them rise again because I couldn’t cook them right away. It’s foolproof! Thank you, Kara, for a recipe that made the finished product look like I know what I was doing. 😉

These were a lovely soft, somewhat sticky dough. They rolled out so nicely with a little extra flour, and they cooked up beautifully on the stove. I do think o could have rolled them a bit thinner, but the 6” rounds were great, thick things that everyone snapped up in no time. Excellent recipe!

This is the best Naan bread recipe I’ve come across. It is now my go to recipe. We love curry in our home but could not quite find the right Naan to go with it.
    This one is a keeper.

  91. Christian McCulloch says:

I would like to know how long I should knead the dough for? “A few times’ makes me wonder how effective that would be. Looks excellent though!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I’d say knead for 5-10 minutes. When the dough feels not too sticky, smooth and elastic, it’s good to go to the next step! This bread doesn’t need a ton of kneading.

Similar to other comments, I found that it took about 4 cups of flour before the dough stopped sticking to my hands and I was able to form a ball. Apart from the flour proportion being a bit off, it made lovely naan!

  101. Henry says:

Appalling dough.. probably my mistake in making but followed recipe….?

  102. Lorna says:

Did you mean tsp of olive oil instead of tbs. My mixture was so watery (oily) I had to keep adding flour so there’s about three times the amount of flour. No way it’s going to rise because the mixture has to be all out of proportion. You have so many good comments I’m gutted mine has turned out a disaster and I don’t know why.

I live in a rural Florida area. Buying Naan buns and bread has become difficult to find, and extremely high priced
Just finished the recipe, will add more salt next time. I’ve tried making tortillas in the past hard crusty disgusting things. These are soft & pliable. I read the reviews, someone was asking how long the dough takes to rise?.. About 30 minutes. I rubbed a little oil on top of the dough too, laid a plastic bag over the dough….topped with a towel to keep it warn. My thermostat is keep around 78 to 80. If your house is cool, put the dough inside of an unheated oven… will help it rise better. I use naan bread for a host of things, pizza, garlic bread, sandwiches, wraps.
Sky’s the limit on how creative I can get now.
I’m thinking of sliced apples with cinnamon baked in the oven yum yum next on my list.
I can’t thank you enough for posting this recipe!!☺Raylene

Can I use the Chakki Atta wheat flour for part of the flour? would I need to adjust the recipe?
    Thank you.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I have never tried using that flour before, so I’m not totally sure how it would affect the recipe. Typically wheat flour takes a bit longer to rise than white flour, but again, I haven’t tried so I’m not sure. You’ll have to let us know if you swap flours how the Naan turns out.

  117. Joyce says:

hi! I just made this and it turned out fairly good! I found 1/2 cup water to 2 1/2 cups flour ratio was not the best as I had to add almost another 1/2 cup of to the mixture. overall I will use the recipe again and add more water or less flour next time 🙂

    1. Joyce says:

had to add another 1/2 cup of water** as there wasn’t enough liquid and the dough was not forming

    2. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for the feedback. Weather, elevation, temperature can all affect baking, so I’m glad you were able to make it work! Thanks for giving it a try!! 🙂

I had to get on here to rate this recipe. This naan is just as soft and pillowy as the naan you buy in the store, or get at a restaurant! After starting with the 2 and a half cups of flour, my dough was still very sticky, so I keep adding flour about a half a tablespoon at a time. I’m sure I went over 3 cups of flour, until it was smooth and elastic. Mine still came out wonderfully soft with the bubbles and everything. The ones that are having problems should probably add more flour a little at a time. Oh, I didn’t have yogurt, so I substituted sour cream, and there was no difference in taste or texture. Thank you, and this is the only recipe I will use for homemade naan. There are thousands of recipes out there, but yours caught my attention cause it looked like the real deal. Going to make more today.

Roughly how long does it take gor the dough to double in size?

      2. Lil'Luna Team says:

It honestly depends on the temperature in your kitchen. The warmer the temp, the quicker the dough will rise. So it could be anywhere from 20-60 minutes.

The naan was very dense and dry when I made this with all purpose flour.

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

I’m so sorry the recipe didn’t turned out as you had hoped. Thanks so much for trying it!

    2. Marci avella says:

Mine was dense too it didn’t bubble up. And get fluffy. Would a different type of flour be the key?

      1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Not sure why it was so dense… possibly an issue with the yeast or maybe too much flour was used? All purpose flour has always worked well for us.

Loved this recipe. My dad recently had to go on very low sodium diet. So naan was my quest to avoid baking powder and soda. I subbed sour cream for the yogurt as daisy brand is low sodium and replaced salt with Morton salt substitute. Cooked these on the pizza stone in my oven on broil. Perfect!

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

I’m so glad you liked the Naan bread! Sounds like you made some great substitutions for the sodium. So happy it turned out well for you!

This was AWESOME! This was the first recipe I tried for Naan. It was as good as the store bought kind, if not better! I’ve made these more times and I can count and even substituting sour cream when there was no yogurt in the fridge. Placing the oiled bowl covered in the dehydrator set for 100 degrees speeds up the process.

I keep them in the freezer and pull them as needed. A few seconds in the microwave or near the vent when the oven is on and there ready to go. Everyone loves them!

Not light and fluffy at all. On medium heat these turned out like crackers, hard on the outside. They took about 10 minutes per side on a preheated cast iron pan. This pan has always made my naan bread.

      Hey Madison.

I was looking for a recipe for naan bread, and there you were. Your recipe seems to be a five. I have not tried it yet. It is now 5:50 am in NY city. Today I will shop for the ingredients I don’t have on hand and make this bread on Saturday – I can’t wait. I’ll let you know how wonderful this bread tastes after making them. I plan to serve with curried chicken and a great big tossed green salad.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Oh I hope you enjoyed the bread! The items you are serving it with sound delicious and perfect compliments to the naan bread!

  163. Aric says:

How long does the dough usually take to rise?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

This could vary depending on the temperature in your kitchen. You want it to at least be 74 degrees when letting bread rise. But I’d say anywhere from 30-60 minutes. Just keep an eye on it and when it is about double the size it was when it began rising, it’s ready for the next step.

  164. Steve says:

I normally replace the sugar that goes in the yeast and water with honey do you think that would work with this recipe as well? Cant wait to try this been making pita for a long time and just recently got turned on to naan bread. I also used unbleached flour would that be a problem?
Thanks for a wonderful, easy to follow and to the point instructions.
    Ciao
    Steve

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I haven’t tried using honey instead of sugar, but I say give it a try! You can use unbleached flour too. Hope you enjoy the bread!!

    2. Lil'Luna Team says:

I haven’t tried using honey instead of sugar, but I say give it a try! You can use unbleached flour too. Hope you enjoy the naan bread!!

  165. Efrian says:

in a hurry so I didn’t use a roller, did it with my hands, the video doesn’t show where the salt goes in, also you don’t specify salted butter or not salted. Greased the pan? with what? oil, butter, lard, etc also not shown on video.

However, the basics work well, just loved it, mine had a bannock-ey creamy interior, I put it together with home made Tzatziki old school, no cucumber skin or seeds, liberal lemon and garlic. just goes so well with summer.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

So glad to hear you enjoyed the flavor of the bread… your flavors sound delicious! The salt goes in with the olive oil, yogurt, egg and 2 cups of flour. Either type of butter could work, just depending on your personal preference. And for greasing the pan, I typically use oil or non-stick cooking spray, but any of those options you listed could also work.

  166. Vanessa says:

Can you freeze this after it has doubled in size and use for another time?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes you can! You can also freeze the cooked naan bread too using parchment paper to separate the pieces. Either way. If freezing as dough, make sure to let it come to room temp before rolling out and cooking.

  167. Cris says:

Is possible to make this bread with almond flour?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

I haven’t tried using almond flour before, so I’m not sure. But if you give it a try, you’ll have to let us know how it turns out!

This is ok. I thought it was going to be authentic naan bread, which it’s not. But it’s simple and ok. I’m not sure I would make it again I’m trying to find a recipe that’s as similar or actual naan bread

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

No yogurt in the fridge so substituted with 2 x tablespoons of milk.
Easy recipe to follow and you can add your own twist.
We are a large family of eight and one each for my older boys was a big no, so I had to double the recipe.

This has become a regular in our house. We like to make cheese naan by filling the small dough balls with some grated mature cheddar cheese. Then gently hammering them out with a rolling pin. And finishing off with a little rolling.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Ooh that sounds amazing!! You can never go wrong when it comes to adding cheese…. always a good idea! 😉

  180. Karen says:

Can these be made with low fat or non fat yogurt ?

    1. Victoria says:

I use whatever yoghurt or flour I have so, by all means, low fat youghurt, bread flour. The results will be different though. But always good. Onviously not self raising flour.

    2. Lil'Luna Team says:

I haven’t tried it, but I imagine it would work just fine. You’ll have to let us know!

      1. Mary Ann Ealy says:

Anxious to make those recipe. I have everything but the plain yogurt. I do have Greek honey yogurt though. Can I substitute the honey yogurt for the plain and leave out the sugar (or use a little less). Looks yummy can’t wait to make this recipe. Thanks for sharing!

      2. Lil'Luna Team says:

I haven’t tried using other flavors of yogurt, but you could certainly give it a try! If you do, you’ll have to let us know how it turns out.

Fab.I made as I had none in the freezer.rolled out and added fresh cilantro and thinly sliced garlic cloves.Rolled up and then divided. I should have added a little more salt.
Hubby said far better than the supermarket. Thank you.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

You’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed the bread. The fresh cilantro and garlic cloves sound like delicious additions!

  182. Fiona Goater says:

Can I use bread flour and by all purpose flour do you mean self raising flour or plain flour? Thanks for the recipe. Going to try it today. Xxxx

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

You could substitute with bread flour for this recipe. Bread flour has a higher protein content so may make the bread a bit chewier in texture, but since it is a bread, it should work fine. You wouldn’t want to use bread flour for a pastry or cake. And yes, all purpose flour is the typical, basic “regular” flour, not the self raising flour. 🙂

Out of this world delicious. I added raw garlic to the wet ingredients. And baked it on a hot pizza steel. Preheated to 550° then switched the oven to broil and baked 2 minutes until nicely browned. I divided the dough into 4 pieces to make a sandwich bread. I filled the rounds and folded it in half. I will be making it soon again.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Thanks for sharing!! I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe. It really is a delicious bread!

Wow!! I love this recipe. My husband loves bread and I’ve been deemed a “ supertaster “ by several in the culinary industry.
Flavor is delicate, nice accompaniment for hummus, we’ve even used it for pizza!
I love to brush garlic butter on it before cooking — delicious.
A little sticky to work with but well worth it — again — so good.
This will be my go to recipe for naan bread.
    Thank you LL!!!!

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

You are so welcome! Thanks so much for sharing what you do. I love all the different ways you use this recipe. It definitely is a versatile one.

  191. Bonnie voigt says:

How much regular yeast would you use

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

You would use the same amount of regular yeast (2 tsp) in place of the instant yeast. Regular yeast takes a bit longer to rise so you may want to consider adding an extra 10-15 minutes for the rise time.

I’ve been buying my Nana bread at Costco. Thanks for the recipe now I can make my own. This is the only way I can get my dog to take his pills since he’s been sick he is much better now but he sure loves the nana bread

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Awe, I am glad he’s better! Thank you for letting me know & happy you both like it!

  195. Karen Perry says:

I’ve tried this recipe twice now and the first time I got bubbly yeast, dough was soft and flexible, and there were lots of “bubbles” in the dough when it was cooking. This time I thought I followed the directions exactly the same but dough was tough and no “bubbles” in finished product. Did I maybe add too much flour this time?? How much should be added since the recipe does not state a specific amount. Thanks!!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I am thinking your yeast was not good the second time. If it doesn’t bubble, it’s probably not fresh/good yeast.

Did anyone reply to you that they tried any of the ‘gluten free’ flours to make this recipe?

If so, I would be interested as my husband and daughter are gluten free. I hated eating this great bread in front of them.

  226. Margaret Gill says:

can the dough be frozen and baked later?

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I don’t know about before baking, but freezing naan is easy to do, after. Just wrap in Saran Wrap or foil and for extra security, place in a freezer safe Ziploc bag and store in the freezer for up to 3 month. Let defrost and warm up in the oven or microwave.

Made this recipe last evening to go along with my Chicken Tikka & grilled vegetables. Turned out great & taste was good but didn’t have the “bubbles” while it was cooking. Also, mine only took about 1 1/2 to cook. I let it rise for about 1 hr.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Glad you tried it! Not sure why it didn’t bubble, but glad it turned out!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I’m sorry. If it did not bubble, the yeast is probably not good. That would be my guess.

THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME EVER MAKING NAAN, AND I WILL NOT BE LOOKING AT ANY OTHER RECIPES. IT TURNED OUT AMAZING! I ONLY USED A SMIDGE OVER 2 CUPS OF FLOUR, FOLLOWING YOUR ADVICE TO KEEP THE DOUGH SOFT & STICKY. I SPRINKLED FLOUR ON MY ROLLING SURFACE AND ON TOP BEFORE ROLLING EACH PIECE. I ADDED A BIT OF ITALIAN SEASONING TO MY GARLIC BUTTER FOR BRUSHING, AND SPRINKLED EACH WITH A BIT OF SALT. TO DIE FOR! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS, I’M ADDING IT STRAIGHT TO MY RECIPE BOOK. 🙂

First time making this recipe, but it was really easy for me, a 22 year-old. The bread was soft and delicious. I would make this again. It took about an hour to double in size. I also used unsweetened vanilla coconut milk yogurt instead of plain yogurt to make this dairy-free, and it still seemed like naan bread. just keep an eye when cooking the bread since it Cooks quickly in the skillet. Thanks for the recipe!

it was my first time making naan and this recipie was really easy! I used plain greek yogurt instead because that’s what I had on hand and it worked well. i was having difficulties with rolling it out and cooking it but those were my mistakes. by my fourth or fifth one i figured out i needed more flour because it was so sticky and on my pan, not use any oil because the oil was making it burn. thanks!
