Love at First Bite

What better way to show you love someone than with these sweet and flaky puff pastry hearts?!

We LOVE love and one of our favorite ways to show we care is with food! Our kids especially enjoy making our food festive around the holidays. This treat is particularly fun around Valentine’s Day. It is not only insanely simple (5 ingredients) but it tastes delicious!

Shape and bake the puff pastry then fill it with fresh Whipped Cream and strawberries for a tasty take on a Strawberry Shortcake. It’s flaky, fresh, and absolutely delicious! The kids also love that they are bite-sized and adorable.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

  • Simply adorable. They would look especially cute on a Valentine’s Charcuterie Board.
  • A light bite. Filled with whipped cream and fresh strawberries, these hearts are a light and fresh sweet.
  • Only 5 ingredients! There are simple ingredients and the steps could not be easier. These are easiest enough for the most novice baker.

Ingredients

  • puff pastry sheets We used store-bought puff pastry sheets, but you can use homemade puff pastry.
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1-1½ cups sliced strawberries – or raspberries
  • 1 cup whipped cream – store-bought or Homemade Whipped Cream
  • powdered sugar, sifted – or drizzle with chocolate

How to Make Puff Pastry Hearts

  1. PREP. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. ASSEMBLE. Unfold 2 sheets of puff pastry and press layers on top of each other. Lightly press the puff pastry dough together. Using a heart cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes in the dough. Discard excess dough.
  3. BAKE. Remove the heart shapes and place them onto a parchment paper-lined baking tray. Lightly brush with 1 beaten egg and bake for 10 minutes until golden brown.
  4. SERVE. Let cool and use a sharp knife to cut the baked heart pastries in half. Right before serving, use 1 cup whipped cream and 1-1½ cups sliced strawberries to fill the pastry hearts.
    • Sprinkle the tops of the pastry with sifted powdered sugar and enjoy.

Puff Pastry Hearts

Ingredients 

  • 2 puff pastry sheets
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1-1½ cups sliced strawberries
  • 1 cup whipped cream, store bought or homemade
  • powdered sugar, sifted

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 425°F.
  • Unfold puff pastry sheets and press layers on top of each other. Lightly press them together. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes in the dough. Discard excess dough.
  • Remove the heart shapes and place them onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Lightly brush with beaten egg and bake for 10 minutes.
  • Let cool, then cut heart dough pieces in half. Right before serving, fill with whipped cream and sliced strawberries.
  • Sprinkle with sifted powdered sugar and enjoy.

Notes

Prep ahead of time. Allow the unfilled baked pastry hearts in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Fill the puffs with strawberries and cream 1-2 hours before serving and store them covered in the refrigerator.
Store. Cover and store leftover filled puff party hearts in the fridge for 1-2 days.
