Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

I think we can all agree that everything is better with Ranch dressing!! It has become such a staple in our home, and not just for salads – we are talking chicken, appetizers, veggies – you name it. We love buttermilk ranch dressing and are sad it’s taken us this long to share our classic recipe with you.

Yes, you can buy ranch from the store, but homemade ranch dressing made from scratch is THE best!! And you may be surprised to know that you may have most of the ingredients on hand already. We know there are so many varieties out there, but our recipe calls for:

  • mayonnaise (such as Hellman’s)
  • sour cream
  • buttermilk
  • dried chives
  • dried parsley
  • garlic salt
  • dried dill weed
  • onion powder
  • lemon juice
  • pepper
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Check your spice rack before you head to the store because you probably have dried chives, parsley and dill weed in there. And don’t forget to grab the garlic salt (with chopped parsley) – it’s my favorite spice and one we use in so many dishes.

How to make Ranch Dressing

Making ranch from scratch is simple and takes just about 5 minutes, besides the time needed to set up in the fridge.

WHISK. begin by whisking together the mayonnaise (I use Hellman’s), sour cream and buttermilk.

SEASON. Once that is smooth, add all of your spices, continuing to whisk until smooth. Add your lemon juice and mix until smooth once more making sure to test the ranch. Add more garlic salt, if needed.

CHILL. Cover and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving.

Storing + Serving Tips

Buttermilk ranch dressing can last in the fridge for a few weeks, but be sure to STORE covered in an air-tight container or jar and place in the fridge. We do not recommend freezing it.

Buttermilk ranch is perfect for making ahead, just make, cover and refrigerate for up to two weeks

As mentioned earlier, there are so many great recipes that are delicious slathered in ranch. Here are some of our favorites:

      1. Were you able to let it sit in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving? That seems to help thicken the dressing a bit too!
