Salsa chicken is your ticket to a 30-minute meal that the whole family will love! And it’s all baked in one pan for easy clean up!

You may have tried Salsa Verde Chicken before, but this version of Salsa Chicken has a traditional tomato salsa and lots of extra toppings. It makes for a hearty and filling dinner dish!

Baked chicken dishes are the best because it usually only requires one pan which makes for EASY clean up! The more time I can focus on enjoying my meal and not worrying about dishes, the better!

This baked salsa chicken is one-pot, baked, and so easy to whip up for a weeknight dinner. It’s one of those meals that you probably already have all the ingredients in your house. Quickly layer everything in the pan and baked in the oven for 30 minutes. Done and done!

The flavors of this salsa chicken are spicy, cheesy, and just plain good. The chicken always comes out tender and juicy, and I love all the salsa and melted cheese on top.

How to Make Salsa Chicken

PREP. Make sure your oven is preheated to 375 degrees. Grease a 9×13 pan and lay the chicken breasts in it.

TOP. Sprinkle taco seasoning on both sides of the chicken. Then pour the salsa on top of the chicken breasts. How easy is this so far?

BAKE. Put the pan into the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the chicken is cooked through.

After it’s cooked, take it out of the oven and sprinkle the cheese over the top. Bake for an additional 3-5 minutes until the cheese is all melted. Serve with sour cream and your favorite Mexican toppings!

Crock pot instructions

If you want to make this salsa chicken in the crock pot, it’s just as easy!

Place the chicken (sprinkled with taco seasoning already) in the crockpot with about 1/4 cup of water on the bottom. Pour the salsa on top of the chicken breasts and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6-8 hours.

During the last half hour of cooking, sprinkle the cheese on top and cook until the cheese has melted. Serve with toppings and enjoy!

Serving and Storing

Definitely top this chicken with yummy Mexican flavored toppings. It takes the chicken to another yummy level. Here are some suggestions:

If you end up not finishing all of the chicken, it makes great leftovers! Just keep it STORED in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. We also like to heat it up and have with our salad. Leftovers can also be shredded and used in burritos, on top of nachos Inside of Quesadillas, or over rice.

Ingredients 

  • 4 chicken breast boneless, skinless
  • 4 tsp taco seasoning mix
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1 cup Mexican cheese shredded
  • sour cream
  • cilantro, tomatoes optional

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375.
  • Grease 9×13 dish and place chicken breast in baking dish. Sprinkle with taco seasoning on both sides of breasts, and pour salsa on top of both breasts.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until internal chicken temperature is 165 degrees.
  • Sprinkle chicken with cheese and bake for an additional 3-5 minutes. Top with sour cream and any other toppings desired.

    Easy to make and so delicious! I get intimidated by recipes with a ton of ingredients and complicated directions. This recipe is the exact opposite and so it’s perfect for me.. Not going to lie, I didn’t measure any of my ingredients. I just made sure the chicken breasts were thoroughly covered with taco seasoning, salsa, and cheese. I paired it with the Spanish rice also found on this site and it was a perfect supper.
