We have yet to meet someone who doesn’t love COOKIES! More specifically, we have yet to meet someone who hasn’t fallen in love with our best chocolate chip cookie recipe.

We got this recipe decades ago from a family friend, and it’s been loved and adored ever since. We’ve made a few tweaks along the way, and any time we make these cookies, we are asked for the recipe right away.

It uses butter, two types of sugar and two types of chocolate chips. The result is extra soft and chewy cookies with the PERFECT chocolate-y flavor! We have a feeling once you try it, that it will definitely be your go-to chocolate chip cookie.

Be sure to check out some of our other chewy, easy chocolate chip cookie recipes, like: Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies and Eggless Chocolate Chip Cookies or cookie classics like Snickerdoodles and Sugar Cookies.

Why we think you’ll love it:

  • Simple steps. These are made in minutes and use pantry staples! No special ingredients are needed for fabulous flavor.
  • SO tasty! This classic chocolate chip cookie is soft, chewy, and delicious. It’s simply the best!
  • Dress it up. We use this recipe as the base for almost every cookie recipe I make.
Flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla, chocolate chips on a kitchen counter. Ingredients for chocolate chip cookies.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar – For a chewier cookie decrease the white sugar to ½ cup and increase the brown sugar to 1½ cup.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter – see How to Soften Butter Quickly. Or use ½ cup softened butter and ½ cup vegetable oil.
  • 2 large eggs – room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – or almond extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour – see How to Measure Flour
  • 2 cups chocolate chips – Use any type or combination of milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or chocolate chunks. We always do one cup semi-sweet chocolate chips and one cup milk chocolate chips. **We also always use Guittard chocolate chips
  • optional toppings – top with sprinkles or flaky sea salt

  1. PREHEAT. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a baking pan or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. BATTER. In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream 1 cup softened butter, 1 cup granulated sugar, and 1 cup brown sugar until combined well (a few minutes). Add 2 eggs and mix on low speed until fluffy (a few more minutes).
    • In a medium bowl, add 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt. Add dry ingredients and 1 teaspoon vanilla and mix until combined. Add 2 cups chocolate chips (we love semi-sweet + milk chocolate).
  3. BAKE. Scoop cookie dough balls onto a prepared cookie sheet. The key to making the cookies look pretty is to add a few extra chocolate chips on top of the balls of dough. Bake for 9-11 minutes (or until golden brown) and cool on cookie racks or a wire rack.
  • MAKE ‘EM BEAUTIFUL – Add a mix of chocolate chips on top of your dough balls before baking. Once out of the oven, use the back end of a metal spatula to round out the cookie and add any more chips on top of the cookie in empty spots.
  • MIX THE CHIPS. Everyone loves this recipe because it satisfies both the semi-sweet and milk chocolate chip lovers!! Guittard chips are the only chips we use when making these cookies. 😉
  • NO-FAIL BASE – Use this delicious cookie dough base for all your cookie needs – Cookie Cake, Pizookie, and any other cookie combo needed. We love adding nuts, M&Ms, different chips and more!
Chocolate chip cookies on baking sheet with spatula rounding out cookie edges.

We all know everyone likes their cookies a certain way – whether it’s soft, crunchy, large, small, chewy, crunchy, etc. Here are some tips to change up some things to get them just how you like them.

  • SIZE – For bite-size cookies, use a mini scoop and bake for 6-7 minutes. For a bakery-style cookie, double scoop (one scoop on bottom and another on top) and bake for 12-14 minutes.
  • FLAVOR – change it up by adding different chocolate chips (caramel chips, peanut butter chips, mint chips, etc). We love the white chocolate chip + butterscotch chip combo!!
  • CHEWINESS – Instead of 1 cup sugar + 1 cup brown sugar, try using 1/2 cup sugar + 1 1/2 cups brown sugar. Or you can use dark brown sugar, which has more molasses and will make them the best chewy chocolate chip cookies.
  • DRY-NESS – DO NOT pack your flour. Fluff flour and then spoon into measuring cup making sure to level off before adding to your cookie dough. Any more than 3 cups is too much flour and will make the dough too dry.
  • CRISPY-NESS – If you prefer a cookie with crisp edges, you’ll need to reduce the moisture content. Try using one of these tips:
    • Bake the cookies for longer at a lower temperature. The cookies will have time to spread out more before they firm up.
    • Replace the brown sugar with white sugar or corn syrup. Without the moisture contained in brown sugar they will become more dry and crispy.

Not sure why the vanilla flavor wasn’t added with the eggs and why the salt and baking powder were not mixed in with the flour first?

I tried this recipe, the cookies are still in the oven. I wanted to ask if yours were crumbly? I double & triple checked the ingredients and recipe. I’ve never had crumbly cookie dough before. I hope someone can answer this for me. Thank you!

  7. Ivy says:

I love this cookie recipe!! It is definitely a keeper. Sometimes when l make them they turn out great. Other times they turn out not as puffy but more flat. Is there something l do wrong on accident to make them turn out this way? It is on and off and very confusing. Thank you!!

    1. BC says:

Always refrigerate the dough at least 1 day for the flavors to blend.

This has been my favorite cookie recipe for 7 years now. I usually make it with 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup oil because they turn out extra soft. This time I tried dairy free chocolate chips and used coconut oil instead of butter, and it was equally delicious. Make it with dark brown sugar instead of light; you won’t regret it!

I found your recipe about 5 years ago. My entire family loves them! They ask me to bring my famous cookies whenever we get together! The only thing I do different is to refrigerate the dough. Thank for this wonderful recipe!!

  12. Kayla says:

I made this recipe with the 1/2 oil and 1/2 butter (because I was low on butter) but the end result tastes a little chalky -the dough looked great tho

What would you recommend to make them have the correct consistency but taste like a proper cookie?

    1. Donna says:

Use all butter. Butter adds flavor and oil doesn’t.

I’ve never been one to bake choco chip cookies; they all taste the same and are pretty underwhelming. But, my son said we should make some so I picked this recipe having tried a couple others from this site before with success. These cookies are amazing! The best I’ve ever tasted. Thank you for the recipe!

  20. CookieLover says:

Hi! Could this recipe be made into a cookie cake? If so, do you know if the ingredient ratios/cook times would need to be adjusted? Thank you!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, I’m sure it could!! It would definitely depend on the size of pan you are using… I’d say if this one recipe isn’t enough to fill the pan, you could double it. Or if it is too much, you could half it. Baking time will more than likely need to be adjusted too.

  21. Beatrice Pascua says:

If you choose to use 1.5 cups of brown sugar, they still taste amazing but you might need to add couple teaspoons of flower. Still makes amazing cookies even if you don’t .

  45. Melanie says:

I have a question, is it a cup of butter that I can replace with a cup of oil? I want a gooey fluffy cookie. I baked these cookies today and they became flat and crunchy and chewy

My go to chocolate chip cookie recipe – except with the oil/butter mix. I can’t recall how much oil used to be in the original recipe, could you post how much to use? Thanks so much – love these!

  48. Jessica says:

Hi there, this is our go-to chocolate chip recipe and we love it! It looks like the oil was taken out of the recipe. We use this recipe all the time, and the oil used to be on here, and in the directions, it still mentions oil. Can you send me the original recipe? Thanks!

  49. Melissa McClung says:

    5 stars
I’ve been using this recipe for years and always come to the website for the recipe and I know that the oil amount use to be there! Lol can we please update that?! I want to say it was 1/4 cup but can’t remember!

  50. Franklin says:

Why is the oil no longer listed in the ingredients? How much oil?

  51. Kristin says:

We love this recipe, but it seems the print version doesn’t list oil? And it’s printing on two pages now. I lost the first printout I had for it, so we’re a little lost now!

  52. Jelena says:

    5 stars
Under ingredients I don’t see oil at all or the amount of it.

  53. Liz says:

I have made this recipe dozens of times..everyone loves them! But i just noticed today that it says to mix in oil…but no where does it say how much? Ive been making it all this time without the oil 🤦🏼‍♀️

  54. Eren says:

I don’t see where it says how much oil to add

  55. Katie says:

  56. Jun says:

This is my family’s favorite chocolate chip recipe after decades of different chocolate chips. We’ve made these dozens of times. They’re the quintissential perfect cookie. We double the recipe and freeze the dough balls.

    My preferences:
-Being careful to only mix until incorporated makes cookies that are more round.

-At 4300ft elevation with a gas stove we like to cook at 425 until just browned to be crispy on the outside and soft inside.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Aw, I’m glad you love the cookie recipe!! Thanks for sharing the tips and tricks.

  57. Mick says:

    Makes a very game-like cookie

  58. Denise says:

    2 questions.
How many cookies per serving for the nutritional fact chart?
Do you have variations for high altitude where regular cookie recipes come out flat?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

It is for about 2 small-medium sized cookies. Obviously cookie size can change those nutrition facts … so if they are bigger cookies, the facts will be a bit more. And I don’t have a high altitude variation, but I’ve found this article to be really helpful when altering foods for high altitude: https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/learn/resources/high-altitude-baking

  59. Marie Chapple says:

Love all your recipes, have not made all of them yet but am looking forward to making them. Thanks so much for posting them.

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

You’re welcome! I hope you enjoy them!

  60. Eveleen Babich says:

Hello there – so excited to make these, can you tell me what size scoop you use?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Yes, I usually use the medium size cookie scoop, but you can honestly use any size. I have made them with all the sizes before and they turn out delicious. You may have to slightly adjust baking times if you go bigger or smaller. Hope you enjoy the cookies!

  61. Anneil says:

When you measure the flour which method do you use? The fluff flour then scoop with a spoon and then level off with a knife or do you just scoop with the measuring cup? These look so delicious! I just want to make sure I measure the flour correctly. 😊

    1. LilLunaTeam says:

Yes – I spoon the flour into my measuring cup and then level it off with a knife. You can measure the other way too but I feel like my measurement is more accurate when I spoon the flour into the cup and level it off. Hope this helps!

  69. Kristi R says:

Chocolate chip cookies are like my ultimate favorite. So I’ve tried a lot of recipes over the years. This is definitely one of the bests. (I did use the suggestion of using more brown sugar than white – I love the flavor a little extra brown sugar gives to cookies.

This has been our favorite chocolate chip recipe for a few years now! My teens and I all have the recipe memorized because we make them so much!!!

  91. Tw says:

I just made this it was really great! I did guess on whether the brown sugar was supposed to be packed or not was it supposed to be? I kinda just over filled my measuring cup and didn’t pack it which tunes out nicely (actually over filled a half cup measure twice lol)

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

That sounds great. I usually loosely pack the brown sugar. So glad you enjoyed the cookie recipe!

Thank you for sharing this recipe,i just successfully baked today. Just wondering if I can reduce the white sugar?😁 Thinking if it’s safe to make the white sugar 1/2cup and 1cup for brown sugar? The recipe is perfect for me but I find it too sweet, hoping I can possible reduce the sugar and keeping it still yummy.. hoping you’ll notice my comment 🙏 thank you 💕

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Hi Ann! Congrats on successfully baking! Way to go! I haven’t tried this recipe with reducing the amount of sugar. You can certainly give it a try and see how it turns out. I’d maybe start with just 1/4 cup less and see how that turns out. And go from there…. again, I haven’t actually tried reducing the sugar. You’ll have to let us know how they turn out if you do make them that way.

I have been making these cookies on a weekly basis for several years and know the recipe by heart! I portion the batch into balls of dough then freeze them. Every night the toaster oven gets turned on and 3 cookies are baked so everyone gets a freshly baked cookie in their lunch the next day. These cookies come out chewy, a bit crispy on the edges with a nice bit of height to them. It feels so good to have ended the hunt for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe! Thank you so much for this!

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Ok, that is amazing!! I think I need to start doing that too so I can have a fresh, warm cookie every night! 🙂 I’m so happy that you love the cookie recipe! Thanks for sharing.

I first made these a few years ago and they are still my favorite, my youngest son has always been so picky, yes, even about chocolate chip cookies, he loves this recipe. I have 3 grandbabies now, A grandson and granddaughter who are both two and a granddaughter that is a year old and I can’t wait to make these using Halloween m&ms! Thank you for this wonderful recipe 😊

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

Oh this makes my heart so happy to hear! Thank you so much for sharing. Yes, we love switching out or adding in M&M’s into these cookies. Halloween ones will be SO fun!

  96. Nita says:

When you scoop up the cookies in step 3 of your instructions do you use a tablespoon of the dough? Can’t wait to try this recipe out🍪😋

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

It depends on how big we want the cookies. 😉 1 tablespoon will yield a smaller cookie, but that’s a great size still …. I typically use a cookie scoop, either the small or the medium depending on what size I am wanting to make them. Just watch the cookies and adjust the bake time slightly depending on how big you make them. Hope you enjoy the cookies!!

Why on earth would I try this recipe???? … or so I thought!! Just do it. These are on a whole different level. They are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I ripped my other recipe into tiny pieces and threw it in the trash.

I usually don’t comment on blog recipes but I really gotta say that these are by far the best cookies I’ve ever made (already made regular chocolate chip cookies and one week later white chocolate macadamia). I read through your tips to make them more chewy and they were still chewy 3 days after baking! I’m in love!

These are perfect cookies! I made with 1-1/2 c brown sugar and 1 c white sugar; 1/2 c salted butter, 1/2 c butter flavored crisco, lessened the salt to about 3/4 tsp. They stayed pretty much in ball form but SO soft and so far are staying that way. I used about 1/2 the dough then added 1 cup butterscotch chips and it pretty much crumbed apart, so I put it into a pan and made a giant cookie. PERFECT !!! Thank you !!!

  110. Lesa says:

How many grams of flour? Do you scoop flour or spoon it in cup and level off??
    Thanks

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

I don’t have the gram measurement, but you can find a conversion calculator online to get that. I just scoop & shake a little, to get it leveled.

TheSe were really good. I don’t love “chewy” cookies, so I was on the fence, especially because of the addition of oil versus shortening or all butter. But I think that they were delightfully crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. I made them in three different sizes: scoops 20/40/60. The big ones (20) were super tender and had a great texture, very soft. The smaller sizes were a little more crispy, but still soft in the centers. I put them in the fridge right after coming out of the oven to stop the baking and set faster (a tip I learned from A Bountiful Kitchen). They will definitely be a regular in my chocolate chip cookie rotation. ??

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Yay!! I am glad you think so!! They never disappoint! Thank you!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this recipe. The original recipe is so delicious. The cookies are nice and soft. I’ve made it with 1 cup of butter instead of using 1/2 c oil and they turn out just as fantastic. I’ve also used almond extract in place of the vanilla with white chocolate chips. My family always asks me to bring these to every gathering we have. Its the easiest and best recipe that I’ve found.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

These really are literally the best chocolate chip cookies. They are absolutely just the right amount of salty to off-set the sweet. I also use an organic milk chocolate wafer for the chocolate chips, resulting in an almost semi sweet flavor with a milk chocolate gooey texture. I am the favorite cookie baker of all my friends!

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Sounds good!! Thank you for sharing that!

These were my go too cookies before I became vegan. So today I decided to figure it out. Subbed the oil and butter for one cup of coconut oil. I think I should have melted a half of that, and flax eggs for eggs. They turned out amazing! By not melting the coconut oil, my dough is very dry and crumbly. But it bakes up perfect. Next time I will give it a shot.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

Thank you for sharing that! Hopefully, that will help someone 🙂

I’m finding that I have to back the cookies longer, in high altitude. I’m in Salt Lake City and it’s about 4500 to 5000 ft high. Have you experienced that? I think that your cookie recipe is the best one I have found. I make about 10 dozen cookies every week and a half. My husband takes them to his volunteering job. They love them.

    1. Kristyn Merkley says:

This has been my go to recipie since I found it several years ago. Just made it again for the millionth time (ok maybe a slight exaggeration) and they are just as good as the first time. I used to live in Salt Lake City and they turned out well that high above sea level. Now I’m in Las Vegas and they are still just as perfect. I’ve never seen a recipe do that transition so well. Thank you so much for sharing it!

  232. Nadia richardson says:

    How many does it make?

These are truly the Best chocolate chip cookies!! I will say, make sure you follow the directions. When it says cream butter and sugars……make sure you cream them. Then beat the eggs in until fluffy….do it. It’s important to mix it. I made the mistake once where I just dumped all the ingredients in the mixer and then scooped them on the cookie sheet and they were terrible! I mean, it was still edible, but you could tell it wasn’t right. I’ve been using your recipe for years that’s why I knew I did something wrong when I tasted the dumped in version. Great lesson learned, follow directions. These are really the best cookies I’ve ever made! I’ve been making cookies for over 25 years and this one is by far superior to any other recipe I’ve made. Thank you so much for sharing. This recipe will go into the recipe books for my kids when they get married or move out.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Awe, thank you!! And, I agree..it’s so important to follow directions! These are our favorite chocolate chip cookies!!I’m so glad you like them1 🙂

    2. Elise Harrell says:

This is my go-to recipe. I typically do 1 cup white chocolate and 1 cup milk chocolate and they are to die for. I want to eat them all. I started taking them to my students when I make them so they don’t all sit in my house staring at me. Love, love, love this recipe!

  234. Naomi says:

Hi! Just wondering how many cookies this recipe makes 🙂 Thanks!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

You could get a few dozen to a couple dozen or even more, if you made mini ones. It just depends on how big or small you make them. I hope you enjoy!!

  235. Maz says:

I’m baking these cookies for a birthday celebration, and I am eager to make them as perfect as possible! With that said, which would be preferred: light brown sugar or dark brown sugar? I’ve been baking for about a year, so I’m still only a bit of a beginner. Thank you! xx

    1. Lil' Luna says:

They would be a hit! I always use light brown sugar, unless it says otherwise. Hope that helps & good luck!

  236. Lisa says:

With a medium cookie scoop, I found I had to cook these for 12 minutes. Otherwise they were raw dough inside. They tasted just okay. I don’t like the vegetable oil flavor in there. Next time will try with all butter…just afraid that will lead to them being not as soft when fully cooled.

  237. Shelly says:

Great recipe, great cookie. Stuck with your ingredients and didn’t change anything. This is the cookie recipe I’ve been waiting for. Thanks!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

So happy to hear that! Thanks so much for letting me know! It’s our favorite too!

  238. Tammy says:

Does the dough need to chill before baking? Also do you bake the dough in balls that flatten as they bake or make disks before baking?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

No, it does not need to be chilled and I leave it in balls. They will flatten out as they bake 🙂 Enjoy!

  239. lisa says:

Hi how much dough per cookie do I put on the tray before baking? Thanks

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I have a cookie scooper or you could use a spoonful to make the perfect size. Hope that helps! Thanks!

Yummy! This recipe was awesome! Only thing I did differently was cook the cookies for 10-11 minutes. Plus I used half white chocolate chips and half milk chocolate chips. Delicious!

  247. Trena Thompson says:

I added 1/4 cup hot chocolate mix, an extra egg, and of the flour used, I used 1 cup wheat flour. I also then cooked it 2 minutes longer. They where amazing! They are also amazing just following this recipe! I have loved it both ways!

These are so yummy!! I was wondering how do I get them flatter .. they were more puffy didnt spread. I had to press them some which is so biggy but they stay in a ball just expanded some. I did use coconut oil instead.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I haven’t used coconut oil before, so I’m not sure how that changes the recipe. Mine are more puffy, than flat, too. You could just press them more. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for giving them a try!!

  252. Mandy says:

Hello there. I was just wondering how many cookies will this recipe make. If you could reply back that would be awesome. Thanks.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

You could get 3-4 dozen, depending on how big or small you make them. I hope that helps!!! Thanks so much for stopping by!

      1. Mandy says:

Thank you very much for this recipe. It is just sooooooo good! I’m definitely going to use this recipe all the time!

      2. Brooke Poulson says:

        softened or melted butter?

      3. Lil' Luna says:

If I know I’m baking, I’ll put the butter on the counter to soften. I always use softened butter. Hope that helps! Thanks so much!

  253. LoriR says:

Can I use 1/2 cup melted butter in place of the oil?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I haven’t tried that, so I’m not sure how they’d turn out without the oil. You can try unsweetened applesauce. Hope that helps 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

  254. Christina says:

How many does the recipe serve?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

It makes close to 3 dozen. Hope that helps! Thanks for stopping by!

  255. Kelsea says:

These really are the best! If they’re turning out oily, maybe try creaming the butter and sugars for longer – a few minutes, really. So hard to mess them up!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Thank you Kelsea! SO glad you like them! We like them too 😉

  256. Panda says:

    Which oil shall I use

  257. Panda says:

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Vegetable Oil 🙂 Hope you like them!!

  258. Brittney says:

I can’t have butter but I can have margarine. Would substituting butter for magarine ruin the recipe or would it be okay?

    Thank you

    1. Lil' Luna says:

It shouldn’t:) Let me know what you think! They really are the best!!

So I’m a few years later to the party it looks like, but I wanted to let you know how much I adore this recipe!!! I’ve been looking for a recipe that turns out consistent results each time I bake it, as well as on my different types of cookie sheets – this one delivers!!! I use a scant 3 cups white whole wheat flour, and canola oil. Today I tried melted coconut oil, and the cookies aren’t spreading quite as much as I’d like, but it is a cool, rainy day, unlike the relatively warm, humid days we’ve had lately. I also deviate from your original recipe in that I only use 1/4 c white sugar. Thank you for such an awesome recipe!!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

You’re so welcome, Nancy!! I love hearing what changes everyone makes, to fit their own likes and tastes!! These are the best!!!

  260. John says:

Do you think I could make this recipe with all “white whole wheat” flour? I’ve not tried this flour in anything since my wife bought it.

    Thanks!
    John

    1. Nancy says:

      5 stars
I make these with white whole wheat flour and they turn out beautifully! I use a scant 3 cups, however, as the whole wheat flour seems to absorb more liquid.

      1. Lil' Luna says:

That’s good to know..thank you Nancy!!

    2. Lil' Luna says:

I haven’t tried that, so I honestly couldn’t tell you. I don’t see why they wouldn’t work out. I know a lot of people like to use that instead. I’d love to know if you make them with that flour!!

  261. Tabitha says:

    5 stars
My go-to recipe every time!! I just make sure to add a little extra flour so they don’t flatten out as much. In fact, so much extra flour that the dough is slightly crumbly and they’re super fat and the middle stays yummy. And I use 75% dark chips to be sassy. 😛

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Haha..I like that, to be sassy!! It is our go to recipe, too..they’re the best!! Thanks for sharing!

  262. Ashley says:

Hello! I’m on the Great Cookie Recipe hunt and I’m trying this recipe next! So far my favorite has been a cream cheese chocolate chip cookie but I need a great go to recipe that uses ingredients I usually have at home. Question for you though – salted or unsalted butter? I can’t believe no one else has asked!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

This is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe:) I always use unsalted butter when baking:) Hope you like them!! Thank you!

  263. Jeff says:

Shouldn’t you chill the dough first?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

No need to chill for this recipe. 😉

Not sure these are going to last until Tuesday when I was planning on taking them into the office! Thanks Lil Luna!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Thanks for the kind words! I’m so glad you like the recipe. We make these at least once a month – they’re the best. I hope you can find more recipes on the site that you enjoy as well. 😉

These are wonderful! I made them for my husband to bring to work. I did one batch as-is and another substituting the last cup of flour for oats. They were both delicious, thanks!!

Yep! You win! Loved these! I took to our church Bible Study last night, and they were a hit. We had everyone bring their Fav. recipe of Chocolate chip cookies, and these WERE IT, if I can say so myself!
I wonder if it’s the baking powder that makes them soft kinda thick? Never seen chocolate chip cookie recipe with backing powder…
    Love your stuff!

I’m not sure what everyone is talking about but I dont think the recipe is that great. I had to bake them for 13 minutes and they don’t taste any different than the recipe that’s on the toll house chocolate chip bag. Just my opinion..

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I’m sorry you didn’t think they were that great. We’ve tried SO many recipes over the years and this one continues to be everyone’s favorite. Always so soft and yummy!

I cannot tell you enough how Much I love these cookies. I found this recipe about a month a ago and I make at least a batch of these a week. These beat all store Bought or bakery bought cookies I have ever had. My fiancé, who is the most critical cookie connisuer, says that these are his favorite without a doubt. Thank you!

Dear God, woman, these are the best cookies I’ve ever made! Not only did they come out looking just like your pictures (which, let’s be honest, never happens), but they tasted as good as they look. I made a half batch from the quantities you posted, and they came out perfect. Soft, chewy, gooey, heavenly! A++ to you!! I am taking the few that I haven’t already gobbled up to a dinner party this evening, and I will never waste my time on pre-made Toll House dough again! Thanks SO much for sharing this recipe!!

Literally just took these out of the oven. SO tasty. The only change I made was that I was out of brown sugar so I had to make some with white sugar and molasses (so the dough had a slight molassessy taste, but it cooked out)
I also had to bake mine for 3-4 minutes longer than your recipe stated. But I love the overall taste of the cookie! Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside. PERFECT level of saltiness and sweetness 🙂 Keeper for sure. Thanks so much 😀

I used coconut oil instead of regular oil and they were FANTASTIC!!!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

I’ll have to try Coconut oil next time I make them. Thanks for the idea. 😉

  275. Linsey says:

i thought I read somewhere to refrigerate before baking, but I’m not seeing it in the recipe. Do I refrigerate and if so for how long?
    Thanks!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

No need to refrigerate before baking for this recipe. 😉

  276. melissa says:

    Can I use coconut oil?

  277. Stephanie says:

About how many cookies does the batch make per serving?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

This makes about 3 dozen. 😉

I made these and they were very good, but then my daughter made them and used 1 tablespoon of vanilla by accident and we ate them. OMG! Amazing!! Our guests went crazy over them.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Never a bad idea to add some extra vanilla. I often add almond extract too – YUM!!

I made this for my boyfriend and he ate them all in one sitting. Not a day goes by where he doesn’t ask me to make them again!

  282. Bree says:

I always make this recipe and its amazing. They always come out perfect and delicious. Today I made them and they weren’t coming out quite right, so I made them again paying close attention to ingredients, and they again came out not right. I don’t know what’s happened. They’re usualy perfect. None of my ingredients seem bad, and ive made many things today with the same ingredients.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Hmmmm – that is so weird. I’m not sure what has happened. Did you use softened butter? And what was wrong with them?

      1. Bree says:

Yea I did everything the same. Usually they thin out a bit and look like your pictures with a little bit of wrinkling. This time they stayed puffed up, even when pressed down, and they got super crinkly and harder. But I didn’t bake then longer, any less they would have been raw. They had started to burn before fully cooked, and it was at the same temperature too. Usualy they stay soft for days, these crisped up instantly. I made the batter twice too. It makes me wonder if I had a bad batch of eggs or something and it didn’t affect the other recipes

      2. Bree says:

They were also not as flavorful as usual. So it seems like I added extra flour, but I didnt.

      3. Tabitha says:

You should check your oven temperature with an oven thermometer. I had a friend whose oven mysteriously broke and ran WAY hotter than the dial stated.

      4. Suek1995 says:

It was probably the baking powder. It loses its effectiveness as it ages.

  283. Samantha says:

I must have done something wrong the dough is very dry and after 7.5 min cookies are still raw. Recipe doesn’t say but I’m assuming I was supposed to add a bag of chocolate chips

    1. Lil' Luna says:

The milk chocolate chips are part of the remaining ingredients. 😉 And the dough should not be dry at all… if at 7.5 minutes they are still raw I would try a few more minutes. 😉

  284. Donna+Howard says:

I’ve told you before — these are the BEST chocolate chip cookies. I’m going to make them tomorrow and try something different – stuff them with a Dove chocolate!! I’ll let you know how it turns out!! I may have to bake a tad bit longer since they’ll be bigger. Thanks for all you do!!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

How did it go adding the Dove?? Sounds like it would be amazing!!

      1. Donna+Howard says:

AMAZING!! But you can’t go wrong with this recipe – it’s my ‘go to’ very favorite chocolate chip recipe!! Thank you!! (I made the role batch for our missionaries and they keep raving to me — every week!! — about them!!) Thank you – again!

      2. Lil' Luna says:

LOVE it!! And I’m sure the missionaries love you for feeding them treats. 🙂

  285. keshaaaaa says:

What kind of flour did you use? 🙂 was it all-purpose-flour?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Yes. 🙂 I use regular all-purpose flour in most recipes and will note whether or not it’s cake flour or something else. 😉

  286. Sophie says:

Hi I was wondering about the temp. It says 350, but as I’m from the UK I don’t know whether that is Celsius or Fahrenheit and what type of oven you are using. I have a fan assisted oven so do you know what the Celsius temp would be to bake these at?

    1. Suek1995 says:

      350 converts to 180

  287. Eve says:

Quick question: Would it be possible to freeze the dough (already scooped into portions) so you could make just 2-3 cookies whenever you crave them? Because I can see myself sitting there eating the whole batch right away 🙂

    1. Lil' Luna says:

LOL!! To be honest, I haven’t ever tried to freeze them. I think it would work but you’d need to let them thaw completely before baking. 😉

      1. Eve says:

I will try it and let you know how it worked out!

      2. Donna says:

I love these cookies! I actually substitute margarine for the butter and a combo of canola and olive oils … I double the batch and was able to freeze half for baking later. I love the soft chewy goodness! It’s the ONLY recipe I use for Chocolate Chip Cookies ????

  288. Christine says:

These are seriously the best chocolate chip cookies ive ever had!! Thank you so much for sharing..

These cookies are perfect. Just perfect. So incredibly soft, and absolutely delectable!
So easy and quick to make, too – great for “I really want to make some something delicious, but also want to be able to sit down for a couple minutes while the baby naps.”

This recipe does make about 6 dozen cookies, so those who don’t want so many of these sinfully good things sitting around might want to halve it.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Using my medium cookie scoop I get a little over 3 dozen, so if you do them smaller you can definitely get close to 6 dozen. SO glad you liked them. They are definitely my GO TO cookie recipe and we’ve been using it for years. 🙂

  290. Audra says:

This cookie recipe is AMAZING!!!! I use coconut oil in the solid for instead of regular oil. And I have cut the sugar way down. And the BEST milk chocolate chips I think are from Guittard!!! AMAZING!!!! My go to chocolate chip cookie recipe now!!!! Thank you. 🙂

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Ooooh… will have to give coconut oil a try next time. So glad they were amazing and a new favorite. We make them all the time! Thanks for stopping by!! XO

  291. Teresa says:

None of the recipes call for sifted flour. Does that mean that it is a given that you do anyway… ? Or that you don’t? Or that you lightly scoop it ? ….. or what do you think?

    1. Lil' Luna says:

If it needs to be sifted I will usually state so. For these cookies, just scoop into your measuring cups and level out – no need to sift. 😉

This is my go-to cookie recipe! At 14 years old, I am known as the best baker in the family thanks to amazing recipes like this! I made these for a bake sale, and one man said “You’re going to make your husband very happy if you can bake like this!” These are just overall amazing cookies! I have never had any better!

    1. Lil' Luna says:

You are so sweet, Alyssa! I’m so glad you like them. They are definitely my favorite too! And that man is right… you’ll have one happy hubby if you learn how to bake well! 😀

  293. beril says:

I have been cooking it almost 20 minutes but It is still dough

  294. Mariam says:

These didn’t turn out as I expected! I used raw brown sugar and caster sugar for sugar. They’re very crispy and hard, not soft n chewy 🙁

I discovered this recipe last fall and have probably made it a dozen times since. They have always come out perfectly for me. I don’t know if I will ever make another chocolate chip cookie recipe. I’m wondering if you’ve ever made these into a chocolate cookie? If I could add a chocolate version of this to my cookie arsenal, I would never look for another recipe again. A chocolate version would be amazing with white chips or mint chips, chopped Andes mints, etc. Any thoughts, or have you tried it?

  296. Kat says:

I’ve made these several times now and they’re awesome. Thanks for the recipe! I use coconut oil (melted) for the oil, and it gives them a great hint of coconut. SO good. And the dough is to die for.

I’m so happy someone mentioned coconut oil. I’m using that now ????

    1. jill says:

Yea, what kind of oil? I just made them with canola oil and they taste disgusting and have the worst texture!

I clicked on this already having a chocolate chip recipe in mind that I thought was the best and ironically its the same one! 🙂 the cookies come out with a much better texture with this recipe and I seriously recommend it above any other recipe because it turns out great everytime (if made correctly lol)

  300. Tristen says:

Would there be a different in the amount if using applesauce in place of oil as suggested earlier? I just made these tonight, and the cookies just ran across the pan, didn’t fluff up at all. Not sure what I did 🙁

    1. Lil' Luna says:

Hi Tristen. Unfortunately, I’ve never tried using applesauce before. 🙁 I haven’t had anyone have this problem, but if you figure out the right conversion rate let me know so I can add it to the post for others to use. Sorry about that!

  301. Tracy says:

Why 1/2 c oil and 1/2 c butter and not 1 whole cup butter? Have you found you really like the half oil/half butter better? What is the difference?

  302. Samantha says:

Thank you for sharing this recipe! It really is the best cookie recipe I’ve ever tried 🙂
Everyone loved it and my super health-conscious friend even asked for more!! Will bake again using different toppings!

Wow! Can’t believe there aren’t more comments on these! These are by far my favorite cookies that I’ve ever made!!! Possibly my facorite that I’ve ever had. They’re just PERFECT!!! Honestly I wouldn’t change a single thing. Sooo soft. This sounds weird but they taste like baked cookie dough, obviously that’s what all cookies are but normally the dough is better than the cookies, not in this case! We love how you can actually taste all the ingredients. I don’t understand what makes these cookies so great, since the ingredients are so basic, but I don’t think I’ll ever try a different recipe again, everything will now have to try to love up to this! Officially obsessed.

    1. Lil' Luna says:

SO glad you love this cookie recipe as much as we do. It seriously our favorite ever!! I use it as the cookie base for every Cookie-related recipe I do!! 😀

      2. Lil' Luna says:

        Of course! 🙂

  304. Netalia says:

Chocolate chip cookies will always be yummy, but these feel waaaayyy too oily and the cooking time should be longer. It’s still practically dough inside 🙁

    1. Lil' Luna says:

So sorry you had a problem. Did you use the right amount of flour? I’ve never had them come out oily. I would also trying baking a minute or two longer if you thought they were dough-y. :/

      1. Miranda LaBelle says:

what kind of oil did you use?

      2. Kristyn Merkley says:

        I used vegetable oil 🙂

    1. Lil' Luna says:

That’s too funny!! We got the recipe from a family friend years ago and it’s our FAV!!
