Delicious Apple Dessert

This easy apple crisp recipe needs no introduction. This dessert pretty much steals the show. I love the combination of soft cooked apples, crunchy sweet oats, and of course the cinnamon and sugar!

There is no stopping my sweet tooth when it comes to easy apple crisp.

Although this recipe screams fall to me, it’s perfect for any day and time of the year. It would be great for a summer BBQ with friends or family, or just a good late-night snack.

It’s also a great alternative to homemade Apple Pie. It’s easier and faster to make than an entire pie.

Slice apples, spices, butter, and oats measured and ready for baking.

How Long to Bake Apple Crisp

This best recipe for apple crisp is simple but takes a bit of time since you need to prep your apples – it’s worth it!

PREP. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

APPLES. Peel, core, and slice apples. Place in a 9×13 inch baking dish. In a bowl, mix sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, and ground cinnamon together. Sprinkle evenly over apples. Pour ½ cup of water evenly over all.

CRISP TOPPING. Add oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and baking soda to melted butter. Mix well. Evenly spread the crumble over your apple mixture.

BAKE + ENJOY! Bake for 45 minutes. Enjoy warm with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramel Sauce!!

Recipe Tips

Prepping the apples is the hardest part of making this best apple crisp recipe. Here are some apple tips to help!

Prepping the apples. You will need 10 cups of apple slices for this recipe. One medium apple can make about 1⅓ cup of slices; you will need about 8 medium apples.

  • Peeling. I like to peel my apples using a vegetable peeler. You can also use an Apple Peeler and Corer (remove the piece that will slice and core the apple and only use the peeling part).
  • Slicing. ¼-inch is an ideal thickness for each slice. An Apple Slicer with 16 slots works best for medium and large apples. A slicer that cuts 8 pieces may require medium and large apples to be cut in half.

Avoid runny apple crisp. An apple crisp can turn runny if using apples with high moisture content. Stick to baking apples: Jonagold, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Mutsu, Golden Delicious, Winesap, Pink Lady, or Granny Smith. Use one type of apple or combine two different types.

If you are worried that your classic apple crisp will be runny, toss the apple slices in cornstarch before sprinkling the flour and cinnamon on top.

Check for doneness. The apple filling should be bubbling and the crumble topping should be golden brown. Once it has been pulled out of the oven, allow it to cool. The filling will thicken as it cools.

Apple Crisp Toppings

This recipe for apple crisp with oats is delicious on its own, but pairs perfectly with any of these tasty toppings!

  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • A dollop of whipped cream
  • Drizzle of caramel sauce or White Chocolate Fudge Sauce
  • Mix chopped pecans or walnuts into the crumb topping
  • Cinnamon can be mixed with nutmeg or replaced with an apple pie spice

Storing Info

Make it ahead of time. Slice the apples 1-2 days before making the recipe, just note that they begin to brown.

To help slow this process, coat the apples in Ball’s Fresh Fruit powder or dip them in a lemon juice and water mixture. Once they have been treated, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

STORE leftover apple crisp into single-serve portions in airtight containers. Store in the fridge for 2-3 days.

To reheat. Microwave in 30-second intervals until warm or heat up in a 350°F oven for about 15 minutes.

FREEZE Apple crisp unbaked or bake it and allow it to cool. Cover the apple crisp with plastic wrap then again with aluminum foil and label. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To reheat. Thaw overnight in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 350°F and remove the plastic and foil.

  • If the crisp had been previously baked, then bake for 25-20 minutes or until bubbling.
  • If it had not been baked previously, then bake for 45-50 minutes.
