Thick chocolate gravy is as good as it sounds. Pour it over warm biscuits, or on anything else your heart desires!

This chocolate gravy is a little different than our Chocolate Fudge Sauce, although it will taste amazing on all the same things! Whether you pour it over desserts or breakfast foods, you’re sure to love this sweet gravy.

Southern Classic

Just like savory gravy, this chocolate gravy is a Southern comfort classic. You can find it everywhere in the Southern United States!

It’s sweet, it’s chocolatey, and it’s best when poured all over warm Fluffy Biscuits. But you can pour it on top of almost anything your chocolate heart desires—especially things like Pancakes and Waffles!

It’s basically a thin chocolate frosting that tastes incredible. It’s so famous in the South that even Elvis liked to eat and serve it at his home, and if the King liked it, I’m almost positive you will too.

How to Make Chocolate Gravy

This chocolate gravy recipe is quick and simple and full of tasty chocolate flavor!

MIX. In a medium mixing bowl, mix the cocoa, flour, sugar, and salt together. Add the milk to the bowl and mix until well combined.

COOK. Pour the mixture into a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook the mixture, whisk constantly, until the texture is similar to gravy with no lumps. This will take about 7-10 minutes.

Remove the gravy from the heat and add in the butter and vanilla. Mix to combine.

Recipe Tips

The texture of this chocolate gravy is important. If it is too thick it will be more like chocolate pudding, but too thin and you have a chocolate syrup that will drip right off the biscuits. 

  • For a thinner sauce simply add a little more milk.
  • To thicken the sauce. The sauce will thicken as it simmers and will get even thicker as it cools. If you are still worried it won’t be thick enough, whisk in a bit more flour. Add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to a bowl along with 1 tablespoon of cold water. Mix and then add it to the chocolate sauce and simmer.

Serving and Storing

Spoon the chocolate gravy over warm Buttermilk Biscuits. Or these other tasty ideas:

Make ahead of time. Talk about a time saver. Keep it in an airtight container chilled in the refrigerator.

STORE leftover chocolate gravy in the fridge. Heat it up over the stove before ready to pour and serve!

FREEZE. Freeze southern chocolate gravy to serve later. Simply let it cool and pour it into a freezer-safe container for about 3 months.

You can also bake up some biscuits and freeze them in a separate container. Thaw the biscuits and sauce before reheating.

  • Reheat chocolate sauce in a saucepan over low heat until warm.
  • Reheat the biscuits in the microwave or place the frozen biscuits on a parchment-lined baking sheet and then into the oven (preheated to 350°F). Bake for about 12 minutes or until warm.

How can I thicken chocolate gravy?

One of the easiest ways to thicken the sauce is to sprinkle in more flour and whisk. You can also add a cornstarch slurry. See the above post for more details.

What kind of cocoa powder can I use to make chocolate gravy?

You can use unsweetened natural cocoa powder or Dutch-processed cocoa powder to make chocolate gravy.

Can I make chocolate gravy ahead of time?

You can make biscuits and chocolate gravy ahead of time and store it in the fridge for 3 days or in the freezer for 3-4 months. Reheat the sauce slowly over low heat.

      Thanks for the recipe! It came out great. I forgot to halve the recipe for just two of us, but the more the merrier when it comes to chocolate, right? I’d heard about chocolate gravy years ago and I’m happy I’ve finally tried it. It was great on biscuits and alongside bacon. Yum!
