We Love Mexican Style Sweet Treats

Thanks to amusement parks and fairs, one of the most well-known Mexican desserts is the cinnamon sugar Churro.

Beyond that, many people have a hard time thinking of a favorite Mexican treat, but there are so many yummy ones to choose from.

Why we love them:

  • Familiar classics to flavor adventures. From the classic custard to delicious cake and beyond to lesser-known favorites, there are plenty of authentic Mexican desserts that you can make at home.
  • New but simple. Don’t let the unfamiliar names deter you, these favorite Mexican desserts use simple ingredients and are still easy to make.
  • For Taco Tuesday and more! These sweets are the perfect dessert ending to your Mexican-themed meal or Cinco de Mayo fiesta.

The “Cherry” on Top

Food from Mexico is most often bold and spicy, but Mexican postres (desserts) rival the sweetness of any other desserts and will surely satisfy your sweet tooth.

A great dessert can be elevated with a great topping. Here are a few ways to sweeten up your favorite postre to your taste:

Favorite Mexican dessert recipes

Many of my traditional Mexican entrees like Enchiladas, Tacos, or Green Chile Burritos are perfect for serving with these traditional Mexican desserts.

You may be familiar with traditional treats like paletas, Mexican sweet bread, and conchas, but these classics (like our Mexican flan and Mexican Rice Pudding) are our most popular and most-made treats!

20+ Mexican Desserts

By: Lil’ Luna
Simple, flavorful, and delicious Mexican desserts are the perfect ending to any Mexican meal. Enjoy these specially curated favorites!!
Servings: 10
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 40 minutes
Total: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 7 cups water
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ground cinnamon for topping

Instructions

  • Add water, rice, and cinnamon sticks to a large saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil and cook for 16-18 minutes uncovered.
  • Carefully drain any leftover liquid and remove the cinnamon sticks before returning the rice to the pan. Add the milk ingredients and bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Once boiling, reduce heat to low and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring constantly to keep the milk from burning while the mixture thickens.
  • Serve warm with cinnamon sprinkled on top.

Notes

Make ahead of time. Store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container for a few days. Reheat it in a pot and add a bit more cinnamon to the top before serving.
Variations. For a more intense cinnamon-flavored rice pudding, add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon in Step 2 when adding the milks. You can also add raisins at this point if you wish.
Toppings. Try topping each serving with a sprinkle of brown sugar, nutmeg, or coconut or with a drizzle of honey.

  1. For my daughter’s high school Spanish class, she had to make a Mexican recipe to bring in, she chose this. The recipe was easy for her to follow and turned out amazing.

  2. I do not think most of these are mexican. Why is everything churro related, not every mexican dish has churros.

    1. Some are a spin on the Mexican dessert flavors (like the churro popcorn and toffee), but many are based on traditional Mexican desserts, like Flan, Tres Leches Cake, Fried Ice Cream, etc. Hope you will give some a try!

  3. Your sopapillas & fried ice cream are my favorite!! I haven’t ever been a huge fan of Mexican desserts until recently & now that’s all I want!
