A holiday tradition, aebleskiver makes a sweet treat or delicious breakfast! They are quick, easy, and sure to be a new favorite!
Similar to Donut holes or Pancakes in flavor, aebleskiver is a unique breakfast or dessert that you are sure to love! Just add a sprinkle of powdered sugar and enjoy!
We Love This Holiday Tradition!
The aebleskiver is a dish that comes from Denmark and is pronounced “ay-bluh-skee-vr”. In Danish Æbleskiver means “apple slices”.
The little pastries were once made with small pieces of apples in the center and are a traditional dessert most often served during the Christmas season.
Why we love them:
- Quick. They’re ready to enjoy in about 30 minutes!
- Easy. The batter is simple and straightforward.
- Tasty. These Danish pancake balls are similar to airy and larger donut holes.
Just be sure to order your aebleskiver pan ahead of time so you’ll be ready to go!

Recipe for Aebleskiver
- PREP. Heat the aebleskiver pan on the stovetop over medium heat.
- BATTER. Beat the egg whites until stiff and set aside.
- In a separate large bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients, then gently fold the mixture in egg whites.
- COOK. Add a small amount of oil to the bottom of each well of the pan (enough to make a spot of oil about the size of a penny in the bottom) then add 1-1½ tablespoons of batter to each well.
- When they start to get bubbly around the edges, use a fork or a knitting needle to rotate them in the pan.
- This part can be tricky and a little frustrating, but keep at it. Continue to rotate the aebleskivers until they are cooked all the way around and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- ENJOY! Remove from the pan and serve hot. These are also fun to stuff with strawberries, whipped cream, Nutella – anything that sounds good!
