We Love This Holiday Tradition!

The aebleskiver is a dish that comes from Denmark and is pronounced “ay-bluh-skee-vr”. In Danish Æbleskiver means “apple slices”.

The little pastries were once made with small pieces of apples in the center and are a traditional dessert most often served during the Christmas season

Why we love them:

  • Quick. They’re ready to enjoy in about 30 minutes!
  • Easy. The batter is simple and straightforward.
  • Tasty. These Danish pancake balls are similar to airy and larger donut holes.

Just be sure to order your aebleskiver pan ahead of time so you’ll be ready to go!

Recipe for Aebleskiver

  1. PREP. Heat the aebleskiver pan on the stovetop over medium heat.
  2. BATTER. Beat the egg whites until stiff and set aside.
  3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients, then gently fold the mixture in egg whites.
  4. COOK. Add a small amount of oil to the bottom of each well of the pan (enough to make a spot of oil about the size of a penny in the bottom) then add 1-1½ tablespoons of batter to each well.
    • When they start to get bubbly around the edges, use a fork or a knitting needle to rotate them in the pan.
    • This part can be tricky and a little frustrating, but keep at it. Continue to rotate the aebleskivers until they are cooked all the way around and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. ENJOY! Remove from the pan and serve hot. These are also fun to stuff with strawberries, whipped cream, Nutella – anything that sounds good!

Recipe Tips

This best aebleskiver recipe can be topped with any of your favorites, we’ve shared a few, along with our best tips.

  • Avoid burning. Be sure that the aebleskiver pan does not get too hot otherwise the outside will burn before the center is done cooking.
  • Season the batter by mixing in some cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or cardamom.
  • Filling. The jams can be slathered on top or used as a filling and inserted into the center.
  • Toppings. Eat plain or dust with powdered sugar, a drizzle of honey or maple syrup, or a slather of Strawberry or raspberry jam, Honey Butter, Chocolate Gravy, Cinnamon Butter, or Strawberry Sauce.

Storing + SERVING Tips

  • STORE. Different toppings may affect how long the aebleskivers can be stored. The following storage times are for plain aebleskivers.
    • Leftover plain aebleskivers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • FREEZE. Store them in a freezer Ziploc for up to 3 months.
  • REHEAT a large amount in the oven at 325°F for about 20 minutes or until warm throughout. Smaller portions can be heated in the microwave.
