Quick + easy appetizer

Wontons are made with a wrapper and filling, then usually fried so they’re deliciously crispy. The wrapper is similar to egg noodle dough but in sheet form.

The filling can be a blend of savory ingredients like meat, cheese, seafood, or vegetables. They can also be made with sweet fillings like cream cheese, nuts, or fruit fillings. This recipe uses classic Mexican food flavors to make the filling.

Mexican Wontons are perfect for dipping in sour cream, Guacamole, hot sauce, Salsa, Queso Blanco, and Pico De Gallo.

Prepped ingredients for making mexican wontons set out on the counter.

Making Mexican Wontons

FILLING. Add shredded cheese, cream cheese, diced chilies, garlic powder, and chili powder to a medium bowl and mix until combined.

Place about 1 teaspoon of this mixture into the center of each wonton.

WRAP. Brush the edges of the wonton wrapper with water and fold diagonally in half. Firmly press edges together to seal.

FRY. Heat oil in a pot to 365°F. Fry about 6 wontons at a time until golden brown and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve immediately with Guacamole, Queso, or Pico.

Air Fryer Directions

Working in batches, add 6-8 wontons to the basket of your air fryer. Spray the outside of the wontons with olive oil or cooking spray. Cook at 370°F for about 7-10 minutes.

Recipe Tips

Do not overfill. Do not add too much filling otherwise it won’t seal well. Use about 1 teaspoon of filling per wrapper.

Consistency. The filling cannot be too wet or it will ooze out.

Wonton wrapper. The wrapper needs to stay moist. Fill one wrapper at a time and keep the remaining wrappers under a damp paper towel.

Fold wonton wrappers in various shapes, the easiest is a triangle like the ones shown in this recipe. Use water or egg wash to help seal the edges closed.

Variations

I love how the flavors of the written Mexican Wonton recipe came together, but it’s always fun to find ways to change them up.

Here are some ideas to try, but keep any additions balanced in flavor and texture with the other ingredients.

  • Add extra flavor with salt, cumin, or taco seasoning.
  • Add corn, black beans, green onion, or chopped cilantro.
  • Use cheddar cheese or a Mexican cheese blend.
  • Add protein with browned lean ground beef or ground turkey, cooked chopped chicken.

Storing Info

STORE leftover Mexican Wontons in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

FREEZE in a well-sealed container for up to 3 months. Thaw before reheating.

Reheat leftover Wontons in the microwave, but they won’t be as crispy. To keep crisp, reheat a few in an air fryer (350°F for about 3-4 min) or several in the oven (350°F for 5-10 min).

Recipe FAQ

What are traditional wontons made of?

Traditional Chinese wontons are typically made with a ground pork and shrimp filling inside a wonton wrapper. This recipe is a Mexican take on wontons, with a Mexican flavored filling inside the same type of wonton wrapper.

Can I make them in the air fryer?

Yes! Working in batches, add 6-8 wontons to the basket of your air fryer. Spray them with olive oil or cooking spray and air fry at 370°F for about 7-10 minutes.

What dipping sauces can I use for my Mexican wontons?

These would taste amazing dipped in Homemade Salsa, Avocado Cream Sauce, or even Chipotle Ranch.

  2. susie says:

I’m confused…it says 1/2 can (4 oz) of green chiles. Does this mean 2 oz? or do we use the whole 4 oz?

    1. Lil'Luna Team says:

That’s correct. You’ll just use 2 oz (or half of the 4 oz can).

  3. Denise says:

Could you use an air fryer instead of deep frying to cut back on the oil? Sound delicious 😋
