Who doesn’t love a little something special for breakfast?! French toast sticks are a fun twist on our favorite French Toast that you can eat with your fingers.
We like to make this from our classic Homemade Bread recipe to make sure the sticks are thick and fluffy and then dip them in Maple Syrup, Buttermilk Syrup or even Strawberry Sauce.
Yes, we understand you can buy these frozen from the store, but we can promise you that you cannot beat this homemade version!
We love this because:

- Filling. This is hearty enough to enjoy as breakfast for dinner or freeze and store for a quick breakfast idea!
Ingredients
PREP TIME: 10 minutes
COOK TIME: 15 minutes
- 6 thick slices bread – choose sturdy stale bread, such as Brioche, Sourdough, Challah, or Texas Toast.
- 3 whole eggs – the main binding agent in the custard. Room-temperature eggs will combine better with the other ingredients.
- 3 cups milk – adds moisture and richness to the custard, softens the bread, and creates a creamy base for the eggs.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – adds a warm sweet flavor to the egg custard.
- ยผ cup sugar – adds sweetness to the custard and can help caramelize the outside of the French toast
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon – or add nutmeg or even a pinch of ground ginger to help add extra layers of complimentary flavor
- 4 tablespoons butter, divided
- Optional toppings – served with syrup like Cinnamon Buttermilk Syrup, Buttermilk Syrup, or maple syrup. They can be dipped in Strawberry Sauce, Pumpkin Dip, Nutella Dip, Apple Brickle Dip Recipe, or Yogurt Fruit Dip
How to Make French Toast Sticks
- PREP. Cut off crust from 6 thick slices of stale bread. Cut into 3 thick pieces, lengthwise. Set slices of bread aside.
- Combine 1 tablespoon cinnamon and ยผ cup sugar in a bowl. Set the cinnamon sugar mixture aside.
- SOAK. Add 3 eggs, 3 cups milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla to a shallow dish and mix well. Soak the sticks in the egg mixture until saturated.
- COOK. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a pan on LOW-MEDIUM heat and add bread pieces, cooking until golden brown on each side.
- Use tongs to place in cinnamon and sugar mixture making sure to coat all sides.
- Continue cooking bread pieces, adding more butter when needed.
- ENJOY. Serve with warm syrup.

Recipe FAQ
Why are there white streaks on my French toast?
- If the whole egg is not thoroughly whisked into the milk the strands of egg white will cook on the outside of the toast.
Why is my French toast soggy?
- Soggy toast may occur if using thin moist bread, too much milk, skim milk, soaking the breadsticks for too long, or cooking at a high heat causing the outside to cook leaving the center still soggy.
How to store French toast Sticks?
- Store the leftover French toast stick recipe in an airtight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days or store in the freezer for 1-2 months.
- To reheat. Reheat single servings in the microwave or toaster oven, or several on a baking sheet in the oven at 375ยฐF until hot.
