kid-approved dinner!

Homemade pigs in a blanket are the easiest appetizer/lunch/dinner idea you’ll ever make! The crescent dough makes these quick to put together for a meal with friends and family.

Best of all? They’re a hit with the entire fam making them a classic family dinner idea. I know my kids love them and I think yours will too!

Why you’ll love Pigs in a Blanket too

  • GREAT ANYTIME! Not only are they great for dinner, but they also make a great after-school snack for kids to grab and eat when they run through the door (just like our Corn Dog Muffins).
  • BEYOND SIMPLE. They take minutes to put together and are so simple that even the kids can make them on their own.
  • FOR THE MASSES. We love to make these for parties, BBQs and even in addition to chili cook-offs since they are simple for making for a lot of people .

Ingredients

Hot dogs in packaging.
  • 1 (8-ounce) can refrigerated crescent rolls – or use 8 ounces of homemade Crescent Roll dough
  • 8 hot dogs – Instead of plain hot dogs, use more savory brats such as Johnsonville Jalapeno Cheddar Brats, Better Cheddar, or Smoked Brats.
  • 1 egg an egg wash helps seal the edges and provides a crispier golden brown finish. It also helps the sesame seeds adhere to the top of the dough.
  • 1 tablespoon water

Make ’em mini. Cut puff pastry or a full sheet of crescent roll dough into 1½-inch squares. Wrap little smokies or cut pieces of hot dog in the dough, brush with egg wash, and bake as directed above.
Prep ahead of time. Roll the crescent dough around the hot dogs and put them onto a baking sheet. Wrap with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. To reheat. Bake at 350°F for 4-5 minutes or until warm throughout!

Recipe FAQ

  • Cheese. Make a slit in the hot dog and add a strip of cheese to each hot dog, or wrap slices of cheese around the dog before wrapping it in the dough. Use American cheese, cheddar cheese, provolone, pepper jack, or mozzarella.
  • Bacon. Add crispy Bacon in the Oven! Place the cooked bacon strip on top of the hot dog. Then roll up the crescent dough and bake as directed.
  • Dough. I like the flakiness of crescent dough, but you can use any type of biscuit dough.
  • Topping. Aside from sesame seeds, add garlic butter, or bagel seasoning if desired.
  • Plan for about 1-2 per person. If making mini pigs in a blanket, plan for about 4-6 per person.
  • Place leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
    • To reheat. Bake at 350°F for 4-5 minutes or until heated through!
