Gooey Butter Cookies Recipe

These Gooey Butter cookies are made with a yellow cake mix, butter, cream cheese, and a few additional ingredients. They are so gooey, chewy, and moist – it’s impossible to resist them!

When you need a quick and easy cookie recipe, cake mix cookies are the way to go! They’re so convenient, and you can easily switch up the flavors depending on the mix—like these Lemon Cookies, or Funfetti Cookies!

Gooey Butter Cookies on plate

made with cake mix – so easy!

We love making cookies with the kids, and today’s recipe for Ooey Gooey Butter Cookies (aka Butter Cookies) are a family-favorite. They are made with cake mix, butter and cream cheese and are so soft and moist that I have yet to meet someone who didn’t like them.

If you’re looking for a quick cookie recipe that will be a hit – this is your treat (they’re just as good as our Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies and Sugar Cookies)! This cookie is pretty much half a cookie and half a cupcake, and you really can’t go wrong with that. 😉

Another reason why I LOVE this recipe is because it can be easily changed up. Based on whatever cake mix you use, you can change the flavor up. You can also add candy and sprinkles on top or in the cookies which can take them to a whole new level.

For this specific recipe, we always use a yellow cake mix, and just sprinkle powdered sugar on top right when they come out of the oven. The powdered sugar melts and lightly frosts the top of the cookie.

Making Yellow Cake Mix Cookies

We love simple cookies and love that these yellow cake mix cookies are just that.

To make them, beat butter, vanilla, egg and cream cheese until fluffy. Add the cake mix and mix until combined.

Chill for 30 minutes. Once chilled, roll into 1 – 1 ½ inch balls and roll in a bowl of powdered sugar. Place on cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes. Once out, sift more powdered sugar on top if desired.

Place on wax paper to cool. Before cooling and right when you take the cookies out, that is the perfect time to add candy on top. We’ve added Hershey’s kisses when we’ve made gooey butter cookies with chocolate cake mix, and they are amazing!

Flavor variations

The possibilities are endless when it comes to the different kinds of gooey butter cookies you can make. This is partially because Betty Crocker and Pillsbury and Duncan Hines are constantly releasing new cake mixes, which means there are more recipes to try.

Here are some of the other recipes we’ve tried using the same recipe but with a different cake mix, and adding a few toppings.

Gooey Butter Cookie Variations

Additional Tips

Storing. Once cool, place ooey gooey butter cookies into an air-tight container and place on the counter for up to 3 days. They should take soft during that time period and although they have butter and cream cheese, they do not need to be refrigerated.

Can you make a cake version of these cookies? I’m so glad you asked! You can, and it’s one of our favorites. We have a recipe for Gooey Butter Cake which uses similar ingredients and makes a delicious cake/bar version of these cookies. Check it out HERE.

I have tried so many varieties of these cake mix cookies in the past, so be sure to check them out. The Gooey Monster Cookies are especially popular with the kids, and especially around Halloween. 😉

        1. You could put it on just at the end so it gets toasted and sticks in the cookie a little. I’m trying these today the original way.

These were a huge hit at work! Had plenty of people asking for recipe! I added white chocolate chips to them and yum!! I will definitely be making these again! Thanks so much for the recipe!

        1. I made a mistake and mixed all the ingredients including the cake with my mixer. (My phone kept freezing so I just guessed on the prep) are they going to bake right or should I start over?

          1. Hi Brittany! I’m curious how the cookies turned out. I imagine they would be fine, but I haven’t added the powdered sugar to the batter before. So I’m not sure how that may have affected the taste/texture. I’d be curious to hear!

Holy smokes, these are an absolute addiction..ive been around the block with my cookies and these are hands down the best. I tried them for the first time using the lemon cake mix. Let me tell ya, they didn’t last much longer than a few hours..highly recommend these for ANY occasion, its truly a perfect recipe. You will never bake another type of cookie again with all the variations you can do with these. Just prepare to eat them way to fast. Especially when served alongside some lemon skunk kush! Sharing this recipe to everyone 🤤

        1. Awe, that makes me so happy to hear that you liked them so much! Thanks for sharing this with everyone! 🙂

  2. 5 stars
I have made these and they are DELICIOUS!!!!! Love, love them. I have tried them with not only vanilla cake mix but strawberry, chocolate, lemon and mixed in chocolate chips, dried fruit, m & ms. Very versatile and always delicious!

    1. Glad you liked these!! And glad you were able to get 60 out of it! Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you have a great day!

Just pulled a batch out of the oven….oh my, soooooo very good, and I’m not easily impressed!!!! Impressed now!!! Super easy as well. Am actually putting this one in my family cookbook!!!

    1. You’re sweet comment made my day, Ericka! SO glad you made them and liked them. They are definitely one of my “go-to” cookie recipes. Thanks for stopping by! 😀

  4. Do you soften the butter or cream cheeses before you mix them? Or let them be at room temperature before you mix them? Thanks! They look sound so good!

  5. I am considering making either the original butter cookies, or the chocolate rolo ones. Which do you guys like better?

    1. Both are SO good, but the rolo ones are really good because of the caramel center. Just depends if you’re in a chocolate-y mood or not. 😉

These cookies are the best cookies I’ve ever had. *had. I made them yesterday and now they are gone. 🙁 Haha but thanks so much for the recipe! I dont ever want to make cookies again unless they are these lol!!!

      1. 5 stars
I roll my dough balls in regular sugar then again in the powered sugar. Seems to give the cookie a better crinkle effect. These cookies are the best. For Christmas, I bake a batch of chocolate, almond, butter and lemon then use tins for gifts. Everyone loves these and wants more!!! LOL

I honestly don’t know how many cookies this recipe makes because me & my husband kept eating them as I pulled them out of the oven! Such a great, simple recipe and the cookies were not overly sweet. 10 minutes left my cookies a little too gooey (so I baked them for 12 minutes) and the texture was perfect! If anyone is a fan of cream cheese, they will adore these cookies.

  8. 5 stars
Made these for a bake sale that my daughter’s Girl Scout troop is having today. These are so good, so soft and so easy to make. These will definitely be on my go-to cookie list.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Cheryl. So glad you like them. They are always on my go-to cookie list! 😀

    Oh.My.God.
These cookies are heavenly. I followed the recipe exactly, except I baked them for 14 minutes, and let me just tell you I think angles sang when I tasted them. I made these for a friend’s birthday, which was literally the only thing that (just barely) stopped me from gobbling up the whole batch right then! Seriously, I’m not exaggerating, these cookies are by far the best I’ve ever tasted, not to mention the fact that there are so many different ways you can go with it! Next time I think I’m going to try it with pumpkin bread mix in honor of fall! Thanks for the delicious recipe 🙂

    1. I’ve never tried them with the Funfetti Mix but my kids would love it. Will definitely give it a try next time I make them. So glad they were a hit! ;D

  10. 5 stars
just made these cookies and they are lovely,
I’ve used homemade cake mix and I’ve put some lemon zest…cant stop looking at them!
    thanks

  11. After you roll them into a ball and coat them with powdered sugar do you flatten them out? Or just put them on a baking sheet like that?

  12. Doing cookie trials for upcoming holiday cookie exchange party next weekend! My son and I are getting ready to make the Gooey Butter Cookies and the Chocolate Gooey Cookies, except we are going to put little mini Reese Cups in them. Just waiting for the cream cheese and butter to come to room temp. Can’t wait as they look so delicious in the picture! Thanks for posting and sharing this recipe!

      1. 5 stars
They turned out great – big hit with my son and husband. Definitely making them for the party next weekend. My little boy has christened them “chocolate pillow cookies.” 🙂

      1. Thanks, I’ll give it a try and let you know. They look so good, I can see how they never made it to the freezer! 🙂

    1. This is a few years later…but did you end up freezing these? I would like to make them and freeze for Christimas.

  13. Do you use pure vanilla or vanilla extract? Just checking because it just says vanilla. Thanks! 🙂 I’m excited to make these!

  14. 5 stars
Made these last week for work, huge hit! They taste just like old fashioned glazed doughnuts! When you bake them with the powdered sugar it turns into a glaze like texture! Making them again this week, and the chocolate rolo ones! Thanks for a great recipe!

  15. 5 stars
HI! I wanted to tell you I made these cookies this weekend and they are to die for! I made them with gluten free cake mix, though. You would never know it is gluten free. They are still soft and gooey. Thank you so much for this recipe. I will be reblogging this recipe with the gluten free changes this week.

    1. So glad it was a success. You will have to send me the link when you’ve posted your gluten free version so that I can add it to the post and direct people your way for the recipe. 🙂

  16. 5 stars
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! These are so good!! I love that they are easy. My daughter who is 3 loves to make cookies. I love that she want to bake but I am legally blind so most of the time it is had for me to measure out everything that is needed. We made these without any trouble!! So thank you again!!

I know this post was a long time ago but I just had to comment that this is really a great recipe. We have used different flavor cake mixes and added different things in the middle of the cookies (peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, nuts, chocolate chips etc. depending on the cake mix we choose) I love that this recipe is super easy for my 7yr old to make as it doesn’t use tons of liquid ingredients. We use the recipe exactly as written and just change up the cake mix for a different flavor each time. Our grocery store was out of cream cheese last time so I grabbed the Neufchâtel cheese and it still came out perfect! Thank you so much for a great recipe that has become a family favorite!

    1. Your comment totally made my day. So glad I could share a family favorite recipe that could become a family favorite for you too!! Thank you for stopping by!!

  18. Okay, I do not bake much. I need to take cookies to church carnival. I assume you do not mix the cake mix up as the directions on the package. Do you add it dry to the cream cheese mixture?

  19. 5 stars
I made these cookies today using lemon cake mix. I have made other versions of cake mix cookies before but this is by far the best one yet. They are fresh tasting, deliciously lemony and slightly tangy. This will now be one of my go to recipes and I look forward to trying other flavours of cake mix soon.

    1. It’s definitely so fun to try new versions of this recipe with new cake mixes! I have yet to try lemon but will have to do that soon. So glad you liked them. 🙂

      1. My family liked them so well that they are already gone! Next time I’ll have to make a double recipe. Lemon is definitely a winner.

Thank you so much for sharing! Saw this recipe earlier today just had to make them today! Hubby loved them and I thought this would be a great base for Strawberry shortcake and it was absolutely amazing! My new go to recipe!

    1. YAY!! Your comment made my day, Bianca!! I’m all about finding more go-to recipes. Glad you liked the Gooey Butter Cookies. 🙂

  21. Just found this on line and want you to know at Weight Watchers last fall one of the members shared something similar. We used a spice cake mix (or carrot cake or similar) with one can of pumpkin and that’s all. It was very good and so low in WW points. Thanks for your version, I will try it next time!

  22. Would love to make them, but there is no recipe? Well, I can’t see one :(. Can you help me? please?

  23. I’m not seeing the recipe on here either. I’ll try to go to one of the other gooey cookie recipes you have.

  24. Have you tried this with carrot cake mix? My husband loves carrot cake and I was wondering how that would turn out…

  25. Hi I have a box of macaron mix. Can I use that?
Also, wat if I want to add Nutella, when do I add it in? Thx

    1. To be honest, I’ve never tried macaron mix and would suggest waiting til you had cake mix. And I would add just a little bit of nutella at the very end. 🙂

  26. Found this recipe via Pinterest! Any chance you’ve made a version without cream cheese? I think they sound wonderful but I really really hate cream cheese!

  27. I made these last night and while I was happy with the outcome, I had a really hard time getting the cake mix mixed in to form the dough. Do you use a stand mixer or add a little at a time or anything special? My hand mixer couldn’t handle the job and I ended up having to knead it with my hands.

  28. Hi, I pinned your cookie on my pinterest Christmas cookie…….how big should the cookie balls be? Should they be crisp when they come out of the oven? Mine are kina rubbery……..what did I do wrong…..I whipped until creamy and then added the cake mix……………….cooled in frig for 35 min and then did the rest of what you said. I used about a two tablespoon scoop……..was it too large..thanks, sally

    1. Hi Sally! I’m so sorry you had problems. They shouldn’t be rubbery at all, but soft and cake-like. Was your cream cheese softened?

  29. how big are the balls supposed to be? I have a batch baking right now… but not sure if it will turn out right because of the size of the ball.. maybe need to cook them longer than the time mentioned in the instruction… crossing fingers… :/

      1. 5 stars
They turned out great! Each cookie were about 3″ in diameter after baking. As for the baking time, it ended up to be 16 min. We’ve also tried the chocolate version with the rolo inside. My daughter and my mom preferred that, but I personally like this better :). Thanks!

        1. So glad you guys liked them. I’m still a bit torn… I like the rolo ones AND the regular ones too. Both delish! 😉

  30. I want to try this recipe but i would like to know if there is any replacement for egg.i mean what change do i make in the recipe if i dont want to make it with egg.

    1. I’ve never made it without eggs but I think you can sometimes substitute 1/4 vegetable oil for an egg. 😉

  31. A couple of questions, how many cookies per recipe and also, is the butter softened or melted!? Thanks so much, these look delicious, especially the pink for a spring bridal shower!

  32. What for do you need the Yellow Cake Box Mix? What’s inside? maybe I can buy something similar in my country.

  33. 5 stars
Do you think I could freeze these? I would like to make some funor my daughters wedding reception, just won’t have the time the day or two before to bake. If so, how long do you think tgey would hold up in the freezer?

    1. To be honest, I’m not sure. I haven’t tried freezing them before. :/ I would make a batch though and test it out. I’d make some cookies 1 day and then put them in the freezer and then take them out at least a few hours a head of time 2 days after you put them in and again 3 days after just to see how they taste. 😉

  34. Is the recipe 1x 8oz cream cheese or 18oz cream cheese?? And in Australia we don’t have Duncan Hines cake mixes, would any cake mix work? Thank you

      1. Thank you so much. Going to try this weekend. School holidays finished. Some cookies ready for lunches. Yum

  35. Is is possible to turn this cookie into a mini cupcake.. I’m suggesting going through all the steps down to the rolling in the powdered sugar and then instead of putting them on a cookie sheet, put them into mini muffin (or tea cake) pans.. any thoughts.. I have everything read to go but would like to make a little teacake rather than a cookie.. thanks.

    1. 4 stars
I actually did it.. in Mini-Cupcake/Teacake tins. and it worked.. not really gooey.. but made the process much simpler than regular cupcakes.. used a small scoop but really likely not small enough just to do a teacake, so they look like mini- big top muffins. I used a vanilla cake mix and a lemon cake mix combined.. added a little Lemon essence (as well as the vanilla) and the powedered sugar made a nice crust on top.

I just made these yesterday. My husband’s verdict – he’s leaving me for them. Beyond buttery, gooey and delicious!

  37. Hi, cant wait to make these, but I do have a question. Should the cream cheese and butter be at room temperature or out of the fridge and still firm?

    1. GOOD QUESTION!! I just updated the recipe. It does help to have both the butter and cream cheese softened. 😉

  38. 5 stars
I just made these cookies and followed the exact recipe except added white chocolate chips and macadamia nuts and they were a hit by all who ate them! Very happy I found this recipe!!

    1. Hi Kendal!! White Chocolate chips and macadamia nuts sound like a great addition. Glad they were loved! Thanks for stopping by. 😉

My daughter is a junior in high school and the juniors put on the prom for the seniors and this weekend is prom. I volunteered to make cookies. I wanted something other than your run of the mill cookie but I also wanted easy, so of course I turned to pinterest where I found this recipe. Last night I did a trial run and I have to say they are delicious and they turned out perfectly!! I used the funfetti mix to make them look fun for prom. We ate some right from the oven and knew we found the right cookie. I do have to say that we had one this morning before school and it was even better after it had set up. They are not overly sweet and they are so delicate and pretty. Tonight when I make the cookies I may add more sprinkles to the batter for more color. I am so glad that I found this recipe and I know I will be making them again and again in many variations!

    1. Thank you so much Kathy!! These would be perfect for prom!! We love these cookies so much and you’re right, they taste even better after they have set. They stay so soft! Thanks for sharing and hope they’re a hit!

    1. I haven’t personally done that, so I wish I knew for sure how’d they turn out. You could possibly freeze the dough and not the cookies. Let me know what you do, I’d love to know.

  40. How do you tell when they’re done?? I put three trays in the oven at the same time (I made the monster cookies, so cute!), which at least in my oven always slows down the baking time. But I can’t tell when to pull them out….

    1. If they are still jiggling in the middle, you know they aren’t done. The bottoms get a little brown, but I like mine at the lowest amount of time, rather than longer. I prefer soft cookies, over crispy. Now, since three trays are in, it may take a little longer! Hope that helps!

  41. How many cookies does the recipe make? So excited….using devils food cake & making them for a cookie party tomorrow!!

  42. I made them using a gluten free cake mix. They turned out fantastic! The folks I made them for did not have high dairy intolerance so the cake mix was the only substitution needed.

  43. The recipe tutorial on Facebook shows two sticks of butter…the acftual recipe calls for 1/2 cup of butter (one stick). Which is correct?

    1. This could make 3-4 dozen. Now, if you make big ones, you’ll get less. This is a great recipe when you need more than a couple dozen. Hope you like these!

  44. Can you freeze the individual cookie balls and bake just a few at a time so you will always have fresh warm cookies?

    1. I have not tried. I wish I knew for sure. I think freezing the dough would be ok, then you can roll them into the powdered sugar before baking them. I just don’t know how long they’d last.

  45. The video shows 2 sticks of butter (1cup) ….. the recipe says 1/2 cup which is 1 stick…which one is correct ?

  46. 5 stars
I just made these cookies using an orange cake mix. I sprinkled them with purple dusting sugar. They look and smell delicious. My son is getting married in a couple of days and I’m having them a Clemson tigers rehearsal dinner. These will be a great part of my dessert bar, if they make it to Friday.
    Thanks for the recipe.

  47. Hi just make these with lemon cake mix so yummy..but the dough is really sticky was wondering if I did something wrong thanks

    1. No, you didn’t. It is a little sticky, before you roll them in the powdered sugar, but not too sticky. I’m glad you liked them!

  48. Your video for gooey butter cookies shows using 2 sticks of butter. Your recipe asks for 1 stick. Which is it? I want to make them today.

  49. Im gonna try to add broken. Up kit Kat candy I have a bag of them I’m gonna try i wll out up on Instagram an im done

  50. Looking to make the Gooey butter cookies. The FB video shows 2 sticks of butter, isn’t that 1 cup and the recipe calls for 1/2 cup.
Is the video a double batch?

  51. OMGeeeee! These r the bomb! I agree, they taste like a glazed donut. Can’t wait to try different cake flavors! Thank you for the recipe ????✌????

  52. The recipe says 1/2 cup butter but the video shows 2 sticks going in making it. So is it 2 sticks or 1 stick of butter?

  53. Hi there! I just found these Gooey Butter Cookies and this will work well for family grad parties and weddings coming up. Anyway can you tell me if these can be frozen well or should I make them closer to the parties? I am not a great baker and this looks like one I can make quickly. Thanks so much for your help! 🙂 Patty

    1. They are perfect for everything!! They are the best! I have not tried freezing them. I would make a batch & test them out, to see how well they are after freezing them. They really are easy to make, so maybe you could make them when you need them, then freeze some?

    1. There isn’t flour in this recipe. I haven’t tried adding it before. I’m not sure how they would turn out if you added it.

  54. your video shows beating two sticks of butter with the cream cheese. the recipe calls for l/2 cup butter which is one stick.???????????

    1. Hmm..I have never tried without a cake mix. I’m not sure if it would be the same as the dry ingredients in a homemade cake. It would take some experimenting 🙂

I took these to a church function & the ladies couldn’t get enough! i had so many wanting the recipe. I am usually a chocolate person, but these are right up there with them. they are super soft & melt in your mouth!

      1. I plan on making these early next year. I’ll let you know what my grandson and granddaughter think of them. Thank you for such a quick response. Have a Happy Holiday.

I made these tonight for work tomorrow. I have a friend who is vegan so I altered the recipe:
    Vegan butter
    Vegan cream cheese
1/4 apple sauce for the EGG
I am not Vegan, and most vegan food I have tried I haven’t really cared for, but these turned out really delicious!

Since It is Christmas time, I used red velvet cake mix. Very festive!

I also made the cookies using your recipe with chocolate cake mix. So yummy!!

    Thanks for sharing your recipe!!

  57. I have a Batch in the oven as We speak . The recipe says 1/2 cup of butter but your video shows two sticks and that woukd be a full cup . So which is it . I only put one stick i hope i didNt ruin this

  58. Can these be made without the cream cheese? Looking for more of a butter cookie and don’t want the cream cheese or sugar to over power the butter from it since the recipe doesn’t call for a lot butter. Tried a butter cookie recipe for Christmas eve and there were terrible, trying to redeem myself. Thank you.

    1. I have not tried making them without the cream cheese, so I am not sure how’d they turn out. You could find a substitute if you google cream cheese substitutes in cookies?

  59. Your recipe says 1/2 cup butter which is one stick but on youR video you sHow two sticks of butter along with the cream cheese??‍♀️

  60. I havent made this yet bUt am wondering why the recipe says 1/2 cup of buttervabd the video looks like you used 1 cup

  61. These cookies are absolutely delicious. They would also be good with some lemon, gooey lemon butter Cookies.

    Thank you,
    Mrs Ruggieri

    1. I haven’t tried making them without. I know it will change it a little. But, you definitely don’t have to.

  62. 5 stars
Just took these out and they are amazing. I live in a gluten free household and this recipe works well with a gluten free mix. i added mini chocolate chips and it is perfect. Thank you for sharing. I am looking foward to adapting and making all kinds of flavors of cookies with this recipe. my husband, and grandkids are excited to have good cookies in the house.

  63. 5 stars
Made these and my family loves them. They are light and fluffy yet decadent. I’ll definitely make them again.

  64. this looks really mouthwatering but I have a question. The recipe calls for 1 stick of butter but the video shows two sticks of butter … Which is correct? Thanks!

  65. 5 stars
These are amazing!! I used the butter flavor cake mix. The first time, i only chilled the dough for an hour, and it was really stickY still and very difficult to Work with, but the cookies came out delicious anyway. The second time, I maDe a doIble batch and let the dough chill for 2 1/2 hours or so. The dough was much easier to work with. And once again, delicious!! Even my hUsband, who doesn’t care for things with cream cheese in it, loved them.

  66. 5 stars
i found this recipe before Christmas. I made these for my Christmas cookie trays. Everyone loved them. They are delicious and addicting. These are super easy to make and are my new favorite cookies. Thanks for the recipe.

    1. I wish I knew for sure. There are many factors that can make cookies flat, such as: not refrigerating the dough, using margarine instead of butter, over-beating the dough, etc. Did you happen to do any of these? Did you press them down at all?

these were sooo good and super easy to make. but i’m a little confused y u use 2 sticks of butter in the video but ur recipe only calls for one. next batch i guess i’ll try it with 2 sticks instead

Just made these cookies tonight and adore them. 🙂 Made a lemon-lime glaze to drizzle on top once they cooled down. So good!

O-M-G! These are my family’s favorite cookie recipe! My kids call them “Cloud Cookies” because they‘re so light and fluffy. It is a staple in our family’s recipe collection. Thank you for sharing!

  70. Hi!!! I love theae recipe but i winder if yiu have your recipe for the cake box? I hate buying Them if they aren’t on sale….thoughts?

In your video it shows two sticks of butter Which woUld be 1cup, in the recipe it says 1/2 cup of butter. Please provide clarity.
    Thank you:)

    1. Actually, it’s just 1/2 cup but we cut it up for the video. Always follow the instructions in the recipe card and use the video as a guide if you have questions.

  72. can you use this recipe and use food coloring for desired color vs. using different flavored cake mixes? Thx.

    1. I am sure that would work just fine. I personally haven’t tried, but usually food coloring works great 🙂

    1. I would probably only keep in the fridge for a few days. I haven’t tried freezing the dough, so I will have to try that!

These were the most delish cookies I’ve had ever! They are so quick and easy and super yummy! A great Christmas cookie for the family!

I totally agree! These are the best cookies I’ve had in AGES. My niece discovered this recipe and gave it to us, and since then, my kids beg me every week to make a batch of these cookies. Truly a life saver for anything from after school snacks to church potlucks. Love love love!!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

        I used a sugar-free cake mix.
I topped each cookie with a scant 1/2 teaspoon of sugar-free cranberry jelly.
Took them to a cookie exchange.
        Outstanding!!

    Hi
I have made this so much in the last month especially the chocolate one and there is not one single person that has tried it that has not gone crazy over them. Thank you so much for the recipe. I wish you and yours a merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I have had at least 5 who have even asked for the recipe and has been passed along

These were the best of all the ones we tried, well at least that’s what I thought. They were so moist and tender. Love these.

OMG! My son put 3 pieces all at once. The moment I got one tray out of the oven, it lasted only 5 minutes and all gone before I can finish making another tray. Everyone in my family can’t get enough of this. I made with red velvet cake mix since it is Valentine’s Day today. It is amazing indeed. Shared some with the neighbors as well.

  77. Have not made them yet, but will definitely! Loved the video. You have great recipes and very well thought out and informative. I think we would all appreciate a video with each one in the future. I know it takes more time, but it SURE is helpful to actually see how it should be done!!!! Love your work!!!

    1. I agree about having more videos too! They do take a lot of time and effort but we are slowly adding more and more to our video recipe collection. Thanks so much for your kind words!

This delicious recipe provided a full circus of flavors in my mouth. However, do not eat these high and on an empty stomach … I was NOT happy the entire batch lasted only 30 minutes – & that I burnt my tongue trying to eat them too early either. I wish they weren’t so fluffy and delicious, it makes them way to easy to eat – and for these reasons, I can only give this recipe a 4*.

    1. Oh thank you for sharing! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the recipe. It is hard to just eat one of these cookies, that’s for sure! 🙂

At last, someone who knows how to make them right, with a cake mix. I make ecery year at Christmas and use other flavored cake mixes for variety. My hubby like when i use a spice cake, kids like chocolate and other flavors

    1. Yes, there are so many variations you can make with different cake mixes! So fun and versatile and yummy. 🙂

The cookies turned out delish! However, after putting them in a sealed Tupperware overnight they became super sticky . How do I fix ?

    1. I’d suggest storing them in a single layer in the Tupperware so that they don’t stick together (just as you would with a sugar cookie). Hopefully that will help!

Made these with Peppermint extract in place of the vanilla and decorated with melted white chocolate chips and crushed candy canes. Perfect for the holiday cookie swap!

  82. I suck at timing cookies. Is there a telltale sign they are done without wasting a batch? I love making gooey butter cake, but the cookies have less sugar, so I would love to ace making these.

    1. I usually check the sides and if they are golden in color and the top doesn’t look too glossy (like raw cookie dough still), then they are usually done. They will set up a little as they cool too.

  83. Can someone please tell me if you press the cookie down a little bit before baking? I went through the comments and watched the video and the author says she pressed her cookies down using her 3 middle fingers and her video shows her not pressing them down. I would really appreciate it if anyone can let me know? I am not a great baker so these kinds of details are pretty important to most of us amateurs! Thank you!

    1. You don’t necessarily need to press them down. As you can see in the video, they turn out great not pressed down.

  84. I tried these for the first time and they are yummy…BUT I clearly did something wrong. I know it’s a sticky dough but mine was beyond sticky and wouldn’t really form a ball. We decided chilling longer than 30 would help but even after an hour and a half they were barely workable. When cooking they spread way out as well. What did I do? Did I let the butter and cream cheese get too soft? Did I over mix? I’m not sure keeping dough in fridge overnight would have helped. Good news is they were still yummy but they weren’t pretty and wouldn’t take them anywhere lol.

    1. I’m glad you loved the flavor! I usually use room temp ingredients and mix them just until combined, so then chilling for the 30 minutes works just fine. Thanks for giving the recipe a try!!

    2. Because of how sticky the dough was .. I dumped it onto wax paper, rolled it up, (like the kind bought at the store) put into the freezer for 30 mins & cut them. Once removed from the oven & cooled .. I dipped the tops into a powdered sugar & cream cheese glaze. 😋

    1. I feel like most cake mixes have dropped down to either the 16 or 15 oz sizes now. Either of those should work just fine!

My cookie balls rolled really well after 30 min in the freeze. Still a bit sticky but no different than other cookies I roll. I was a bit disappointed in the flavor, not much to it. But I also ate it right out of the oven so they might be more flavorful when completely cooled.

Made mine with white cake mix and added the rolls to some. OMG these were fantastic. Next time gonna try adding some nutella.

        1. Mmnnnnnn – Nutella sounds delicious with these cookies! If you try it out let me know how it turns out. I would love to hear! Thanks so much for sharing what you did!

I am going to try this recipe for sure. But, I’m going to add some chopped pecans to them and see if they are anything
like Mexican Wedding Cakes. Maybe an improvement 🙂 I will let you know! Although they won’t be as healthy with the processed food…cake mix 🙁 But you have to splurge once in awhile. Who said Mexican Wedding Cakes or anything yummy is healthy, anyway!

    1. Very true! 😉 Hope you enjoy the recipe. You’ll have to let us know how they turn out with the chopped pecans. Sounds delicious!

I used almond extract and just a little vanilla extract and these were the best cookies I’ve ever made!!! And so easy!

    1. I love using almond extract in baking. I’m sure it was delicious! Thanks for sharing what you did. I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the cookies!

yummy but way more cakey than I wanted .. gooey butter cake is one of the best things ever and i was hoping for more of a chewyness like the bottom of a gooey butter cake .. .. think im gonna try with melted instead of softened butter .. maybe 2/3 of the cream cheese ..

You can used just about any cake mix flavor and appropriate added flavor you want. I’ve made these using chocolate cake mix to carrot cake mix and everything in between. I also use the smallest size cookie scoop or even a melon baller to get smaller sized cookies. I’ve been able to get almost 40 small sized cookies using this recipe. Chilling is key when making smaller cookies. If you only have a 1 inch scoop, just cut the scooped ball in half. This is a great, easy go to recipe for the novice or expert. Let your imagination run wild.

First time doing these gooey butter cookies. Simple and easy, so good. Hubby loved them. Gonna try with some different cake mixes. Maybe lemon or even spice . Thanks for sharing this recipe.

    1. You’re welcome! It is so fun to make them with different mixes. Just gives it a different twist each time. Thanks for giving the recipe a try!

    1. You can definitely try! I haven’t ever tried a keto cake mix, but if you do, let us know how they turn out!

  90. Hi Kristyn, I haven’t made these yet so I cannot rate them. I was just wondering if the recipe is able to be doubled and still come out the same? I know some recipes can and some can’t be doubled. Just would save on having to whip up cream cheese and all two different times. 🙂 Can’t wait to try these! I think I may add some butterscotch chips to the original butter recipe cookies. That sounds delicious! I’ll be back to rate them after making them. Thanks!

    1. 5 stars
My mom made these for years, and I absolutely adore them! The recipes can easily be doubled, however the dough can get incredibly firm and hard to mix by the time you get to mixing in a second box of cake mix, so she would add a dash of milk or softened cream cheese to help with that. Enjoy 🙂

  91. What size “box” cake mix? I have seen numbers all over the place over time and distance. They are shrinking and different countries have different size boxes. Thank you!

These were the bomb. It’s worth the sticky dough but I used gloves soo it wasn’t to bad. Instead of yellow cake mix I used pineapple and drained crush pineapple and added to mix..Totally awesome. I’m going to try cherry next..

  93. 5 stars
Baked these cookies first using yellow cake mix, followed by chocolate fudge and then red velvet. Bake these cookies and you will not regret it! Chocolate fudge are the favorite, but any flavor cake mix works and will not disappoint!

  94. I’ve made this recipe many times over the years. I substitute 1 Tbs. cornstarch and 1 Tbs. water for each egg because my elder nephew is allergic to eggs. It never fails me.

  95. Yeck! These tasted bland and perhaps needed more ingredients. I have used yellow cake mix before in pan cookie bars but those usually have more ingredients which enhances the cake mix and in the end, you can’t distinguish the cake mix. These cookies were so bad that my brother-in-law put his back. That’s a first in 35 years!

  96. I’m a bit turned off by description of “gooey”. I’d prefer soft and moist, but not sticky. Are they really sticky, gooey?

This receipe is great, and was recommended to me by my bosses mother. I love that you can try different cake mixes with it. Last year I tried strawberry, and chocolate. This year I will be doing a red velvet mix with some white choc chips, a devils food cake with toffee bits, and the standard yellow cake mix with lemon zest. My only thoughts on it are that on my first go around it was tough to tell when these were done bc the top stays very gooey (as the name suggests), and the bottom of the cookies brown but very little. Not to mention they are too squishy to really check the bottom so that can be difficult. You also have to let them cool on the pan for several minutes (like 5-10) before putting them on a wire rack if you’re going to, and even then as they are such a soft cookie I would recommend parchament paper down on the cooling rack. Lastly they should be fully cooled if you plan to sprinkle them with powdered sugar afterwards, otherwise they wont get that pretty snowed on effect. This recepie is so easy, and if you like to bake cookies the things I just mentioned are easy enough to figure out, although it couldn’t hurt having these tips in the recepie so it was easier for newbies. Either way its still a 5 * receipe as its so easy to create and play with.

  98. These cookies are the absolute BEST!! M daughter-in-law doesn’t even like cake but these are her favorite cookie ever!! Tastes like heaven!!

  99. I made these with my granddaughter and they were a hit! Can I make the dough ahead of time and freeze it until I am ready to bake them?

I made these. They are really good. Not sure what if did wrong but it was just a bit drier than I thought it should be. My husband says they are the best cookies he’s had.

Light and fluffy! They’re rather plain, but still very lovely. They’d be great with tea or coffee. We served these with fresh strawberries and it tasted like strawberry shortcake!

  102. Great recipe, the dough is delicious too! Lol. Im frosting mine with creamcheese frosting. It’s amazingly rich and delicious
