How To Make Cheeseburger Casserole

PREP. Preheat the oven to 350 ยฐF.

MEAT. Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until no longer pink. Stir and break up lumps while the meat is browning.ย Once the meat has browned add the tomatoes, with the juice, the Worcestershire sauce, oregano, 1/2 teaspoon, Lawryโ€™s salt and pepper. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat. Simmer the mixture for about 15 minutes.

NOODLES. While the meat mixture is simmering fill a medium pot half full of water. Add 1 teaspoon salt and bring the water to a boil. Stir in the noodles and boil for about 8 minutes, until tender.

COMBINE. Drain the noodles, then return the noodles to the pot and pour the tomato mixture over the noodles. Stir until blended.

BAKE. Spray a 8×13 baking dish with cooking spray and add the noodle mixture. Top with cheese. Bake for about 15 minutes, until the cheese is melted.

SERVE. Enjoy this meal with your family. Refrigerate any leftovers.

Variations

This Cheeseburger casserole was really easy to make and was a hit with my family. We kept the casserole pretty simple, but like with burgers, you can get creative with what you like to have added on top.ย

  • Once you have removed the casserole from the oven, add chopped dill pickles, Diced tomatoes, Bacon bits, or scallions.
  • Switch the ground beef for ground sausage or turkey. You can even mix different meats together.
  • Pastaโ€”any similarly sized pasta can work. Just cook to al dente.
  • Change up the cheese.
  • Add some heat with hot sauce or red chili flakes.

Making Ahead & Storing

Make ahead: There are so many great reasons to make a casserole; one of them is that you can usually make them ahead of time. Cheeseburger casserole is no different. You can either make it ahead of time and store it in the fridge or the freezer. A couple of storage tips undercook the pasta and do not top with the cheese.

  • Fridge: Place casserole in a baking dish. Cover with plastic and keep in the fridge for 1-2 days.
  • Freezer: Place casserole in a freezer safe baking pan, cover with plastic wrap, then again with foil. Label and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge before baking.
  • Cook: When you’re ready to bake take the casserole from the fridge and let it stand at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Top with cheese and bake.ย

Leftovers: Divide leftovers into individual portions. Keep in airtight containers in the fridge for 2-3 days, or in the freezer for 1-2 months. Reheat in the microwave or in a skillet on the stove top. If needed, add a little tomato sauce to help give it a bit more moisture.
