Why Love Fry Sauce?

A french fry sauce recipe is a regional thing, but this magical dipping condiment has grown in popularity, even found on store shelves. However, the homemade version is the way to go!

Fry sauce is famous in Utah. The version we all know and love was first served at Carlos’ Barbeque which eventually became the fast food chain, Arctic Circle.

Since then, we’ve made a homemade version that tastes just as good and is so delicious.

Why we love it:

  • Easy. This sauce only uses a handful of ingredients, most of which you have in your pantry.
  • Quick. This sauce is whipped up in minutes!
  • Dip it all. Fry sauce is most notably used for french fries but is also used for Chicken Nuggets, Hamburgers, French Fries, onion rings, tater tots, wraps, and more.

Few Ingredients

  • mayonnaise Mayo is the base of this sauce. Try using Miracle Whip or Vegan Mayo as an alternative.
  • ketchup
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • red wine vinegar – or use pickle juice, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, or horseradish
  • season salt or add garlic powder or onion powder to taste

How to Make Fry Sauce

  1. COMBINE. Pour all ingredients into a bowl and whisk until combined. Keep refrigerated for 1 week.

Add spice. Add tabasco sauce, paprika, cayenne pepper, or red chili flakes.

Serving suggestions. Try pairing this sauce with Sweet Potato Fries, Fried Green Beans, Flatout Wraps, Burgers, Hand-Dipped Corn Dogs, or Grilled Cheese.

Recipe Tips

  • Restaurant variations. Red Robin replaces ketchup with BBQ Sauce, In N Out Burger adds pickle relish, and Outback Steakhouse adds horseradish and brown mustard.
  • STORE. Whether you make this ahead of time or use it right away, it’s good for 1-2 weeks in the fridge when stored in an airtight container. Do not freeze.

I use Salad Dressing as my base. It takes practice to get the right ratio, but once you figure it out, it’s super yummy!

I had to try this because all my Utah friends kept saying how awesome it is. It didn’t disappoint- even if this Iowa girl uses ranch on everything.

I spent my first few years in Utah and was very dismayed when I moved to AZ and no one knew what fry sauce was. This is a really good recipe.
