Homemade maple syrup in a glass jar for pouring.

Better From Scratch!

We love pancakes for breakfast and maple syrup is the perfect topping!

Pure maple syrup is made by boiling down the sap of maple trees, while this recipe is a quick kitchen substitute and uses a combination of ingredients to simulate the flavor of maple syrup.

If you’ve ever wanted to know how to make maple syrup (without filling buckets of maple sap) this delicious homemade recipe is for you!

Why we love it:

  • For more than pancakes! Drizzle it on your favorite breakfast casseroles, a bowl of Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, or add flavor to breakfast smoothie recipes and other drinks.
  • Better than store-bought. Unless you are buying pure maple syrup, this homemade version is healthier than imitation syrups – no high fructose corn syrup here!
  • Ready in minutes! With only two simple steps, you’ll have delectable homemade syrup in no time for you easy breakfast ideas.
  • Make it yours. Making pancake syrup at home allows you to customize the flavor and sugar content to your preference.

Recipe FAQ

  • When the sugar granules do not fully dissolve the syrup can take on a gritty texture. Use the following tips for a smooth syrup:
    • Don’t scrape any sugar crystals from the side of the pot into the syrup, instead use a wet pastry brush to gently remove the crystalized sugar.
    • While not necessary, it can help to combine the sugar with a little water (it should have the consistency of wet sand) before cooking. This helps start the process before adding the remaining water to the saucepan.
    • Add a ½ teaspoon of lemon juice or corn syrup to the syrup before cooking, these two ingredients interfere with the crystallization process.
  • Homemade maple syrup can be stored in a mason jar with a lid or other airtight container in the fridge for 10-12 weeks.
